Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The book of Revelation was written in Koine Greek. What is the Greek name for the book of Revelation?

Answer: Apokalypsis

As close to the Greek spelling as Latin letters will allow, the correct answer is Apokalypsis , which means "the unveiling of something previously unrevealed"
In English the word is rendered as apocalypse, which people associate with prophecy that foretells disaster.

Apokrypha means hidden, and refer to a set of books which were written between the years of the Old and New Testaments. These were once part of the canon but no longer appear in Protestant Bibles because the contents thereof are considered not to be divinely inspired.

Musterio Enigma is the modern Greek for mystery.
2. Which atrocity did the gospel writer Matthew compare to an incident described by the prophet Jeremiah?

Answer: The massacre of infants by Herod

Jeremiah 31:15 reads "Thus saith the LORD; A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping; Rachel weeping for her children refused to be comforted for her children, because they were not."

Matthew 2:16-18 says "Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men. Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, in Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not."

Not quite a word for word quotation. Perhaps Matthew was quoting scripture from memory, or quoting from the Greek version of the Old Testament called the Septuagint.
3. "He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not" - Isaiah 53:3. According to Christian tradition, who does this prophetic verse speak of?

Answer: Jesus Christ

Christians believe this refers to Jesus Christ. Isaiah 53 is the chapter which describes the suffering servant. In Old Testament prophecy, the Messiah is depicted as both a victorious king who will rule on the earth, and a suffering servant who is humiliated and suffers on behalf of mankind.
4. Which of these is the Prophet Isaiah not known for?

Answer: Calling on God to consume a sacrifice

That one belongs to Elijah.

From the book of 1 Kings chapter 18:37-39 we have "Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again. Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God."

Being sawn in half wasn't a trick. It was, according to folklore, how the evil King Manasseh disposed of Isaiah.
5. How does the Prophet Isaiah so poetically describe the lineage of the Messiah through the stem of Jesse?

Answer: As a root out of a dry ground

Isaiah 53:2 "For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him."
6. In the book of Daniel, what does the image of gold, silver, brass, iron, and clay depict, as seen by King Nebuchadnezzar in a dream?

Answer: Consecutive world empires

The image, described in Daniel chapter 2, represents the consecutive world empires of Babylon, Media & Persia, Alexander the Great, and Rome.
7. The book of Psalms is considered to have Messianic prophetic content, as are other books of the Bible which are not known specifically as prophetic books. The question is: Why does the title of the book of Psalms begin with the unusual letter combination "Ps"?

Answer: The English name for the book was taken from the Greek Septuagint

Blame the Greeks. A Greek translation of the Hebrew scriptures was made and called the Septuagint. In the Septuagint the Hebrew title of Tehilim, meaning praises, was renamed Psalmoi, meaning sacred songs. The Greeks have one letter in their alphabet called psi, pronounced as in lips, which English needs the combination of the letters P and S to replicate. Over time, the pronunciation of the letter P was dropped.
8. In what way was Elijah a kill-joy at the court of Ahab?

Answer: He announced that there would be no dew or rain on the land

From the first book of Kings, 17:1:

"And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the LORD God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word."
9. Here's a question about John the Baptist. His attire was rustic and wild. He seems to have borrowed his dress sense from an Old Testament prophet who appears in the first and second books of Kings. In the Bible we read that men were sent to ask John if he was that same prophet returned. Who did these men think that John was?

Answer: Elijah

John 1:21 "And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elijah? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No."

From 2 Kings 1:7-8: "And he said unto them, What manner of man was he which came up to meet you, and told you these words? And they answered him, He was an hairy man, and girt with a girdle of leather about his loins. And he said, It is Elijah the Tishbite."

Matthew 3:4 "And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey."
10. Which prophet was the last judge of Israel?

Answer: Samuel

Samuel was the last theocratic leader of Israel. Toward the end of his life the people requested that he find a king to rule over them.

1 Samuel 8:4-5 reads, "Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah, And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations."
