Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Matthew 5:14 Jesus made an observation about light right after he spoke of salt. What did he say about light, according to the King James Version of the Bible?

Answer: Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

Jesus had just delivered what is commonly called the Sermon on the Mount and was further explaining precepts to His disciples. The entire 5th chapter is devoted to reviewing things that he had previously taught them or that they had known since childhood. A recap of sorts was the apparent purpose that He chose to give them so that His teachings could perhaps take root in their hearts.

2. According to Psalm 49 in the New King James Version, who will never see the light?

Answer: the foolish

The correct answer is the foolish. Psalm 49 is largely about the false confidence of the foolish, with Verse 19 in the New King James Version stating they will never see the light. Psalm 49 is one of ten psalms written by the sons of Korah.

3. Psalm 27:1 is one of my favorite verses because it gives me comfort when I am feeling scared. It tells me not to fear. Which of the following is NOT a reason mentioned in this passage? (NIV Bible used)

Answer: The Lord is my Shepherd

I have to say, this verse keeps coming to my mind more often nowadays. The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
The Lord is my Shepherd is found in Psalm 23.

4. The whole Bible is the Word of God, but what are the first words that God speaks in the King James Version of the Bible?

Answer: Let there be light:

Genesis 1, verse 3: "And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness."(King James Version)

This was God's first gift to His new-made creation, representing the sign of the greater Light, (Jesus) which would be given in future centuries.

5. Here's a verse from the New King James Version containing the word 'light': "The light of the righteous rejoices, But the lamp of the wicked will be put out." In what Old Testament book filled with witty sayings do you find this verse?

Answer: Proverbs

The verse in question is from Proverbs 13:9. The vast majority of the content in Proverbs was written by Solomon, a king of Israel noted for his wisdom. However, Agur is credited with writing Chapter 30 and King Lemuel with writing Chapter 31.

Using the New King James Version Bible, the word 'light' appears five times in Proverbs.

6. "The sun shall be no more thy light by day..." In which Old Testament book of prophecy may one find this mentioned (in the King James Version)?

Answer: Isaiah

In the King James Version the statement is continued this way -
"neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee: but the LORD shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory."

Isaiah seems to be prophesying of a future time when the sun's light will no longer be necessary for life, a theme which correlates with the book of Revelation.

7. In the book of Exodus, after Moses had persuaded the Pharaoh to let God's people go, with what light-related means did God use to protect them when the Egyptian army came against them due to Pharaoh changing his mind?

Answer: with a pillar of a cloud

In the 19th and 20th verses of Exodus we see that God sent a pillar of a cloud to cover the escape route of His people. On the Egyptian side of the column of the cloud they could only see darkness, whereas on the side of the Israelites a pillar of fiery light appeared, brightening their night so they could see.

An excerpt from the 20th verse reads like this in the King James Version -
"...and it was a cloud and darkness to them, (the Egyptians), but it gave light by night to these (the Israelites): so that the one came not near the other all the night.

8. According to Exodus 10:21-29, when the plague of darkness was unleashed on Egypt, the Israelites still had light in their dwellings.

Answer: True

The Plague of Darkness was the ninth of ten plagues unleashed by God on Egypt to convince the Pharaoh to grant permission to the Israelites to leave. Exodus 10:21-29 tells of Moses stretching out his hand toward heaven and suddenly there was "thick darkness." However, the Israelites were exempt, with Verse 23 stating "all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings".

Question by Cowrofl
9. John 1:6-8 (in the New International Version) mentions that there was a man who came only as a witness to the light, but was not the light. Who was that man?

Answer: John the Baptist

As he preached, John made sure to let people know that he was not the one they were expecting, he was only preparing the way for one who would come later. Once Jesus started his ministry John presented him as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
