Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Genesis, there is an account of God bringing a flood to cleanse the earth of the evil that had consumed it. After the waters subsided, what did God give as a sign that He would not destroy the earth in such a manner again?

Answer: Rainbow

The narrative of the Great Flood is found from chapters 6 to 9 in the book of Genesis. Seeing the evil within the earth, God decided to destroy the world through a flood. However, He chose to save Noah and his family as they were found to be righteous. Noah built an ark according to the specifications provided by God.

The ark was used to save Noah's family along with representatives of the various animal species that were then found on the planet. The storm raged for forty days and nights and later, when the waters had subsided, Noah and his family got out of the boat and offered a sacrifice to God. God then put a rainbow in the sky as a promise that He would not destroy the earth through a flood again.
2. When the Israelites grumbled about the lack of food in the desert, what did God send down from heaven?

Answer: Manna and quail

God promised to feed the Israelites in the desert. In the evening, a flock of quail came to where the Israelites were camping so that they could have meat. At dawn, the land surrounding the camp was covered with dew. When the dew evaporated, thin flakes that looked like frost were left behind. This was manna, which the Israelites then collected and used to make bread.
3. When the prophets Elijah and Elisha were walking together towards the end of the former's life, what appeared out of the sky?

Answer: Chariot

Elisha was a disciple of Elijah. When Elijah was nearing the end of his life, God told him to go to Jericho. Elisha accompanied him and asked for a double portion of his spirit. While they were walking together, suddenly a fiery chariot appeared from the sky and Elijah was taken up into the heavens in a whirlwind. Elisha then picked up his mantle and continued prophesying to the Israelites.
4. Which of these men commanded the sun and moon to stand still so that the Israelites could vanquish their enemies?

Answer: Joshua

In chapter ten of Joshua, there is an account of the kings of five different kingdoms getting together against the Israelites. The Israelites led by Joshua had made peace with the city of Gibeon. This worried the other kings who were concerned with the Israelites growing influence over the region.

They got together to attack Gibeon and the Gibeonites sought help from the Israelites. God confused the armies of the different kingdoms so that even though they outnumbered the Israelites, they were defeated. Joshua was worried that if night fell before the armies were completely vanquished, it would give them enough time to gather together and attack again.

He thus commanded the sun and moon to stand still until God gave victory to the Israelites.
5. Which group of men did a heavenly host of angels appear to and inform of the birth of the Messiah?

Answer: Shepherds

The Gospel of Luke contains an account of a host of angels appearing to shepherds while they watched over their flock at night. The angels praised God saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.". They then told the shepherds of this birth of the Messiah, after which the shepherds went and worshipped the baby Jesus.
6. The Gospel of Matthew mentions that Magi followed a star in heaven to find the new born Messiah. Which of these does the Gospel *not* mention about these men?

Answer: Their number

The Gospel mentions that the Wise Men or Magi came from the east following an unusual star they had seen in the sky which indicated the birth of the Messiah. They brought along with them gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh, among others. Upon first reaching Jerusalem, they went to meet King Herod to see if he knew about the baby. Later, after worshipping the baby Jesus, they went back to their country by a different route after an angel warned them not to reveal anything about the child to Herod.

While tradition commonly states that there were three wise men, probably corresponding to the three gifts mentioned in the Biblical narrative, there is no actual mention of the number of wise men in the passage.
7. When Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan river, which of these descended from heaven upon him?

Answer: A dove

John the Baptist was a cousin of Jesus, born to Mary's cousin Elizabeth and her husband Zechariah. He preached about the coming of the Messiah and asked the people of Israel to repent for their sins. When Jesus approached him and asked to be baptized, John first refused, claiming that instead Jesus should baptize him.

When he finally agreed and baptized Jesus, the heavens opened and the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove descended upon Jesus. They then heard a voice from the heavens say, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."
8. At which of these places did Jesus ascend into heaven?

Answer: Bethany

After his resurrection from the dead, Jesus appeared to his disciples many times and preached to them. Among the Gospels, Luke is the only one to record Jesus' ascension into heaven, and a similar account is also found in the book of Acts by the same author. Jesus was in Bethany with his disciples when he ascended into the heavens before their eyes.

He commanded them to stay in Bethany until the Holy Spirit was poured onto them. This event occurred some time later, and is known as Pentecost.
9. Which apostle had a vision of a sheet of animals being lowered down from heaven?

Answer: Peter

This account is found in the book of Acts. Peter saw a vision of a vessel with a sheet of animals being lowered from heaven. A voice then commanded him to eat the animals. Along with clean animals, the sheet contained animals that were considered unclean by Jewish law and were forbidden to be eaten by Jews.

Hence Peter refused to eat. However, the voice admonished him telling him not to call unclean that which God has cleansed. This played out for a total of three times and Peter then took it as a sign that the dietary laws of the Jews were no longer applicable to followers of Christ.
10. Among the many visions in the book of Revelation, there is one of a woman in the sky about to give birth to a child. Which of these creatures appears before her?

Answer: A dragon

This vision is recorded in chapter twelve of the book of Revelation. The woman is described as wearing a dress like the sun and a crown of twelve stars on her head. Standing on the moon, she was in labour and before she could give birth, a red dragon appeared.

He had seven heads and ten horns and was ready to devour the baby. The child was born and safely taken to heaven while angels gathered to fight the dragon.
