Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the medical term for fainting?

Answer: Syncope

Fainting occurs for many reasons, including a temporary lowering in the supply of blood to the brain.
2. What is a decubitis ulcer also known as?

The decubitis ulcer is often seen in bed-ridden patients in hospitals and nursing homes. It is caused by pressure where the patient is unable to change position.

9. If a patient is scheduled for surgery, you are likely to see a sign saying NPO above the bed. What does the O stand for?

Answer: Os

NPO stands for either Nil Per Os or Non Per Os, which both mean 'nothing by mouth'. Eating or drinking prior to an operation is not allowed as it increases the risk of vomiting while under anesthetic.
10. A person goes into the Emergency Room complaining of a ringing in the ears. What would that condition be called?

Answer: Tinnitus

The person could also complain of buzzing and roaring in the ears. Tinnitus is not a disease, but a symptom. Unfortunately, it is not always possible to diagnose the cause and the sufferer has to live with the condition.
