Keep An Ion It Trivia Quiz

Ions are charged particles that can either be of one type of atom or different types of atoms, called polyatomic ions. Without ions there would be no nerve conduction or life processes.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Julia Roberts portrayed activist Eric Brockovich whose law firm represented residents in the area near a PG & E power plant. What ion did the suit claim poisoned the water?

Answer: hexavalent chromium

The plaintiffs won their lawsuit although the money didn't amount to much per residents near the plant. Erin Brockovich was rewarded with a million dollar check and a job in the law firm. An interesting fact is that Erin did memorize all the phone numbers and addresses of the 600 plus plaintiffs. She claims that she did this because of the learning disability dyslexia.
2. What best describes ionic bonds?

Answer: Electrons are lost or gained to produce anions and cations

Ionic compounds are formed from elements that have large electronegativity differences. Neutral atoms with fewer than four electrons donate them to the neutral atoms with more than four electrons. This produces very strong bonds, producing hard, brittle compounds.
3. What ion is necessary for forming strong bones?

Answer: calcium

The calcium compound that is a structural component of bone is hydroxyapatite, sometimes called hydroxylapatite.
4. What ion of a highly poisonous substance is composed of an atom of carbon plus an atom of nitrogen?

Answer: cyanide

Cyanide acts like carbon monoxide, which bonds to blood cells more strongly than oxygen. This kills the victim by hypoxia, the lack of oxygen to the cells.
5. In what polyatomic ion does nitrogen have a valency of 5?

Answer: nitrate

All nitrates are soluble in water. The charge on the nitrate ion is minus one. Since each oxygen has a negative two charge, the valency of the nitrogen in this ion is plus five. Nitride has a -3 charge and nitrite has a -3 valency.
6. What are the major ions of iron?

Answer: ferrous and ferric

Ferric oxide is the chemical name for rust. Ferrous sulfate is the dietary supplement given to pregnant women. The valency for ferric is +3 and +2 is the valency for the ferrous ion.
7. Which polyatomic anion has a charge of minus three?

Answer: phosphate

Phosphates used to be used in detergents, but they caused environmental problems. In the fifties, soda fountains used to combine flavored syrup with carbonated water to make a drink called a phosphate, although I don't understand why.
8. A common chemical used in oven cleaner and in making soap is lye. When lye dissolves in water, what two ions are produced?

Answer: sodium and hydroxide

In days of yore, people made their own lye by percolating water through their fireplace ashes. Today you can buy it in a can. One of the most popular brands is Red Devil. Always take caution when working with lye. Wear gloves and goggles because it causes burns.
9. Carbonic acid dissociates in a first step to a hydrogen ion and a bicarbonate ion. What ions result from a second dissociation?

Answer: hydrogen and carbonate

Carbonic acid is formed when carbon dioxide is bubbled into water. This is the acid in soda pop.
10. The hair of blondes sometimes turns green in chlorinated swimming pools. What ion causes this color change?

Answer: copper

According to Answers.com, the positive copper ions interact with negatively charged hair. Many copper compounds are blue or green. The minerals malachite and azurite are a brilliant green and a deep sky blue respectively. Other blue minerals containing copper are chrysocola and turquoise. An interesting test to discern the difference between these two minerals in to place your tongue on the mineral. Chrysocola will create a grabbing sensation and turquoise won't. I learned this years ago in the mining business and checked it out.
