Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This element has the the highest atomic number of all stable (non-radioactive) elements, and is sometimes considered a metalloid. Which element is this?

Answer: Lead

Usually classified as one of the heavy metals, lead has the highest atomic number of all stable (non-radioactive) elements. Used in many things like cookware, building construction, bullets, and paint, lead has played an important role in society since the ancient age. I also found that all uranium isotopes, (versions of the atom), are radioactive.
2. Which of the following is a noble gas?

Answer: Krypton

Unlike the similarly named kryptonite from "Superman", krypton is a non-reactive noble gas. Under strict laboratory conditions, it can be bound with fluorine to form a white crystalline solid that is stable, (non-radioactive), at temperatures below -30°C. Krypton is also used in neon signs to make a glowing purple color.
3. Which of the following elements is liquid at room temperature?

Answer: Both of these

Bromine and mercury are the only elements that are liquids at room temperature. Mercury was used in thermometers until it was labeled toxic. Bromine is usually a reddish brown liquid that can burn skin. It is also used to make purple dye.
4. Which of the following elements is the most reactive element on the table, located at spot 9 on the table?

Answer: Fluorine

Fluorine is the most chemically reactive element on the periodic table. Fluorine will rip an electron away from almost any other element to complete its outermost electron ring.
5. Which element is used in steel, is the sixth most abundant element in the universe, and is attracted to magnets?

Answer: Iron

Iron is the sixth most abundant element in the universe, fourth in the Earth's crust. Iron is used in many industrial products, including steel.
6. This element is a key ingredient of gunpowder, one of the six elements considered essential for life, It also looks yellow in its normal state. Which element is this?

Answer: Sulphur

Sulphur is a naturally occurring element often found around volcanoes. Sulphur has been used in gunpowder and pest killing gas. Sulphur is one of six elements that are considered essential for life, along with: carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, and nitrogen.
7. Which element has seventy-eight electrons, and is a transition metal? (The number of electrons in an atom is equal to the atomic number).

Answer: Platinum

Platinum is a precious metal used in jewelry, as well as for industrial applications. Platinum is the least reactive metal on the periodic table. Platinum is very immune to corrosion.
8. What element has the chemical symbol W, is used in light bulbs, and has a very high melting point?

Answer: Tungsten

Tungsten is a very durable element, it has the highest melting point of all metals on the periodic table. Because of this high melting point, it was used in light bulbs.
9. How many stable (non-radioactive) noble gasses are there?

Answer: Five

The noble gasses are the (currently) six elements on the far right column. These gasses do not react with many other elements because of their full outer electron shell. Most noble gasses light up when their electrons are excited creating a glow used in neon signs. The discovery of a seventh noble gas, element 118, was pending confirmation in 2014.
10. Which of these elements was not discovered at UC Berkeley?

Answer: Hassium

Americium, Berkelium, and Californium were all discovered at UC Berkeley between 1944, and 1950. Hassium, on the other hand, was discovered by a German team in 1984. It was produced by bombarding lead ions with iron ions until the two atoms fused creating 3 hassium atoms, which was enough to study them and add them to the table. Hassium was named after Hesse, which is a state of Germany.
