This may seem like a strange and distasteful topic for a quiz, but I'm writing it in the hopes of educating you and helping you to understand the importance of this procedure. I'll try to add a little humor too. :)

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is a colonoscopy?

Answer: A procedure used to examine the colon

A colonoscopy is a procedure that is used to examine the colon or large intestine. It is done by inserting a "colonoscope" into the anus and then through the colon. A colonoscope is a small, lighted, flexible tube and fibre-optic camera.
2. What is the purpose of a colonoscopy?

Answer: To investigate various diseases of the colon

A colonoscopy is used to investigate different diseases of the colon, such as inflammatory bowel disease, diverticular disease, and of course colorectal cancer. Although it isn't a fun thing to have done, it is very important in detecting early cancer. Colorectal cancer is not rare and is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths.
3. The first colonoscopy was carried out in which decade?

Answer: 1960s

The procedure was developed by two surgeons in New York - Dr Hironi Shinya and Dr William Wolff. It caused some controversy, but the doctors were able to prove the efficiency of the system. The flexibility of the instruments used meant that the whole of the colon could be examined and the procedure is now accepted and used around the world.
4. What type of preparation by the patient is required before a colonoscopy?

Answer: Clear liquid diet for 1 to 3 days and laxatives

Preparation for a colonoscopy can be the worst part of the procedure. Your doctor will prescribe a clear liquid diet for one to three days before your colonoscopy. You are also usually required to take strong laxatives for a day or two before the procedure. Both of these requirements are to ensure that your bowels are empty.

But after you're all done, you can eat whatever you want! Bon Appetit!
5. What kind of doctor usually performs a colonoscopy?

Answer: Gastroenterologist

A gastroenterologist is usually the doctor who performs a colonoscopy. They sometimes jokingly refer to themselves as "Rear Admirals". It gives new meaning to the phrase "Working where the sun don't shine".
6. At what age (in the USA) should a regular colonoscopy become part of your health care?

Answer: 50 years of age unless there is a family history, in which case 40 years of age or earlier

The answer basically gives the reason when and why you should have a colonoscopy. If you have a family history of colorectal cancer or have had other intestinal problems, your doctor will usually want you to be checked around 40 years of age or earlier, depending on at what age your relative(s) developed the disease.
7. If you are at average risk for colorectal cancer, which means that you don't have a family history of the disease, how often should you have a colonoscopy?

Answer: Every ten years

Most professionals agree that an average male or female with no family history of colorectal cancer and one who has had the procedure at age 50 with no problems, should have a follow up every ten years. Your doctor will want you to have a colonoscopy every five years or less if other intestinal problems have been discovered, or if you do have a family history. You are then considered high risk.
8. Can a colonoscopy, by itself, prevent cancer?

Answer: No

The procedure itself will not prevent cancer, but removal of polyps will prevent 80 to 85% of cancers of the colon. The earlier polyps are found, the better, of course. Polyps can be removed while the colonoscopy is being performed and then examined for signs of cancer. Most colon cancers originate with polyps, which is why a colonoscopy is so important.

There are rare cases where cancer of the colon is caused by inflammatory bowel disease or other abnormalities.
9. Patients are almost always given a general anaesthetic before the colonoscopy.

Answer: False

Normally, patients are not put to sleep for a colonoscopy, although some doctors will use a general anaesthetic. Most patients are given a sedative which is used to relax the body and to minimize any pain and discomfort, which can range from mild to severe, depending on the person. Sometimes the patient will sleep through the entire procedure, which is the best way to do it, if you ask me.
10. Are there any dangers associated with a colonoscopy?

Answer: Yes

In most cases, the benefits outweigh the risks when it comes to colonoscopies. Two of the more serious risks include heavy bleeding from having a large polyp removed and tearing of the colon lining. The latter is rare, however. Some people report abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, cramping or fatigue after a procedure.

The fatigue is usually due to the after effects of the sedative and the liquid diet. Risk is higher in elderly patients or people with a history of diabetes, stroke or heart failure.
