The Sabres defeated the Canadiens 4 games to 2 to win the Prince of Whales Conference. They beat the Blackhawks in the quarterfinals. The Canucks lost to Montreal in the quarterfinals, and the Bruins lost to the Blackhawks in the preliminary round.

Answer: New York Islanders

The Islanders, in only their 3rd season, made the playoffs and pulled off the impossible by defeating the Penguins 4-3, overcoming a 3-0 deficit. They nearly repeated this feat by falling behind the Flyers 3-0 before fighting back to tie, but eventually lost game seven 4-1.

The Islanders would eventually pay back the Flyers during the 1980 Finals winning the first of 4 consecutive Stanley Cups.

Known as The Fog Game, the Sabres won in overtime 5-4. The bat incident also happened during the game. The zamboni falling through the ice happened before the debut game of the World Hockey Association's Philadelphia Blazers.

Not only were they the only NHL team to beat the Soviets, the win made the Flyers actual World Champions.

Freddie "The Fog" coached the Flyers from 1971-78. The Flyers made the playoffs in all but Shero's first season. After leaving the Flyers, Shero went to the Rangers where he led the Blue Shirts to the finals. Shero passed away November 20, 1990, and is still beloved in the city of Philadelphia.
