Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Back on September 5, 1914, the pitcher for the Providence team in the International League hit his first career home run, in Toronto. Who was that player, who would later become much more famous as a home-run hitter than as a pitcher?

Answer: Babe Ruth

Ruth pitched a one-hit shutout that day, with the final score 9-0 in favour of the visiting Providence team. The ball, which Ruth hit right out of the now-vanished Maple Leaf Stadium, went into Lake Ontario and was never retrieved. The Babe would go on to hit a career total of 714 HRs, a record that remained unbroken from 1935 until Hank Aaron surpassed it in 1974.
2. When did Toronto's Major League Baseball team, the Toronto Blue Jays, win their first World Series?

Answer: 1992

Joe Carter became one of Toronto's best loved sports figures after he made the final out at first base in the 11th inning of a Game 6 against the Atlanta Braves in Atlanta. The victory made the Blue Jays the first non-U.S. team to win the World Series.
3. Between 1971 and 1984, Toronto soccer fans could root for a professional team that played in the North American Soccer League (NASL). What was the name of this team?

Answer: Toronto Blizzard

The NASL was an amalgamation of the FIFA-sanctioned United Soccer Association and the unsanctioned National Professional Soccer League. It was ahead of its time; North Americans had not yet become addicted to the Beautiful Game, and the league folded after the 1984 season.

The name Toronto Blizzard was revived from 1986 to 1993, by a team in the Canadian Soccer League and the American Professional Soccer League. There have probably never been Toronto soccer teams named Mounties, Tower or Ontarians.
4. On September 30, 1993, a major North American sports organization sanctioned a new professional Toronto team (along with one based in Vancouver) as part of its expansion into Canada. Which organization was it?

Answer: NBA (National Basketball Association)

The Toronto Raptors (named in a wave of enthusiasm for the 1993 movie "Jurassic Park") did not play their first game until 1995. They entered the NBA at the same time as the Vancouver Grizzlies. In the early 2000s, the Raptors made it to the Eastern Conference Semifinals for the first time with a squad that included Vince Carter.

The Vancouver Grizzlies disappeared in 2001 when the franchise moved south of the border, to become the Memphis Grizzlies.
5. What is the name of Toronto's CFL (Canadian Football League) team, an appropriate one for a city based on a lake?

Answer: Toronto Argonauts

The Toronto Argonauts (named for the entourage of the Greek legendary hero Jason, whose ship was the Argo) were founded in 1873 by the esteemed Toronto Argonaut Rowing Club (the other team name choices are imaginary). They are the oldest professional North American sports team to continue using the same name and playing in the same city.

The Argos won the CFL's coveted Grey Cup 14 times in the 20th century.
6. To the surprise of some, the national sport of Canada is not ice hockey but lacrosse, a tough game played with hand-held nets and a very hard ball. What is the name of Toronto's professional lacrosse team?

Answer: Toronto Rock

The Rock play in the National Lacrosse League (NLL). They were originally known as the Raiders, and based in nearby Hamilton, but moved and were renamed in 1999. The Bandits are a Buffalo team, while the Sting play in Arizona.
7. If you were near the Toronto waterfront on September 8, 1954 you could have witnessed a remarkable athletic feat that would go down in history ... and it was accomplished by a 16-year-old girl! What was this event?

Answer: First swim across Lake Ontario

Toronto-born Marilyn Bell was the first person to swim across Lake Ontario (she swam the English Channel less than a year later, in July 1955). She completed the 32-mile swim in one minute less than 21 hours. A waterfront park where she came ashore is now known as Marilyn Bell Park.

Incidentally, the first person to run a four-minute mile was Roger Bannister, who had done it on May 6, 1954, only a few months before Bell's swim.
8. The Toronto Maple Leafs were one of the Original Six teams in the National Hockey League.

Answer: True

From 1942-43 until the 1967-68 season, the NHL consisted of two Canadian teams (Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens) and four based in the USA (Boston Bruins, Chicago Black Hawks, Detroit Red Wings and New York Rangers). These are the teams known as the Original Six.

The Toronto team was founded in 1917 and played for some time as the Toronto Arenas, then the Toronto St. Patricks. In 1927 they took on the name of Maple Leafs. Today, fans know them as the Leafs, the Buds or the Blue-and-White.
9. Toronto's professional soccer team, with the straightforward name Toronto FC (Football Club), is a big hit with fans although the club has yet to establish itself as a powerhouse. What are the team's home colours?

Answer: Red and white

It's common to see Torontonians wearing official red and white Toronto FC jerseys and scarves all over town. The club, which was founded in 2007, was the first Canadian team in MLS (Major League Soccer). Nicknamed the "Reds", the team plays at BMO Field at Exhibition Place near the waterfront, a new stadium built on the site of Exhibition Stadium, the former home of the Toronto Blue Jays.
10. Which of the following sports history institutions would you find in Toronto?

Answer: Hockey Hall of Fame

The Basketball Hall of Fame is located in Springfield, Massachusetts; the Baseball Hall of Fame is in Cooperstown, New York, and the Canadian Football Hall of Fame is in Hamilton, Ontario. The Hockey Hall of Fame in downtown Toronto features exhibits of artifacts like clothing and equipment used by past hockey greats and interactive exhibits.

It is also the resting place of the revered Stanley Cup.
