Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was ahead after the ladies qualifying round?

Answer: Joannie Rochette

Joannie was ahead after the Q-round by a few points. Jenny Kirk is not Canadian, as she is an American skater.
2. Who won the men's short program?

Answer: Jeff Buttle

Jeffrey won the short. Emanuel was second, Shawn third, and Ben fourth.
3. What side-by-side jump was done for the first time at this championship in pairs?

Answer: triple lutz

Side-by-side triple toes are pretty much mandatory at that level, and some pairs also do the salchow. The lutz is considered a more difficult jump than the loop.
4. Who won the men's free skate?

Answer: Jeff Buttle

Jeff won the free and the men's overall title. Chris Mabee skated first and basically did a perfect program, and the men basically rose to that challenge. Ben had a couple of errors and ended up off the podium, while Emanuel attempted two quads (toe loop and salchow) but popped both.
5. Who won the bronze medal in the men's event?

Answer: Shawn Sawyer

Emanuel won silver; neither Chris nor Hugh medalled.
6. Who won the bronze in the ladies' event?

Answer: Mira Leung

Mira Leung placed third, behind Phaneuf, who only landed one triple, but whose program was more complex, artistic, and better choreographed; Phaneuf had also accumulated more points in the Q-round and short. Amanda Billings ended up in fourth.
7. Who were the defending champions in pairs?

Answer: Valerie Marcoux and Craig Buntin

Wakamatsu and Fecteau are a newly formed pair, although Fecteau has skated in several championships with different partners. Langlois and Archetto have the best results internationally, but have never won their own nationals.
8. What pair each also skated as individuals in men's and ladies?

Answer: Meagan Duhamel and Ryan Arnold

Meagan and Ryan did well in the pairs short, and Meagan also did well in the ladies short, but both long programs had lower results.
9. Which two ice dance teams qualified for the Worlds?

Answer: Dubreuil and Lauzon; Wing and Lowe

Dubreil and Lauzon placed first and Wing and Lowe second, so the two teams qualified to go to Worlds. Virtue and Moir are a team new to seniors who placed fourth.
10. Why would Lefebvre and Markov not be eligible for Worlds even if they had won?

Answer: Markov hasn't been a resident of Canada long enough

To prevent country-hopping, the I.S.U. has ruled that a skater must reside in a country for two years before representing it at Worlds. It doesn't matter how long a dance team has skated together, or if they competed in the Grand Prix.
