Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Other than Bart Giamatti, what other MLB commissioner died in office?

Answer: Kenesaw Landis

Landis died in 1944 during his 24 year reign as baseball's highest ranking official.
2. Which of the following was NOT a 1964 St.Louis Cardinal World Series pitcher?

Answer: Vinnie Smith

They were all connected in that Smith umpired the game. The other three listed pitched in game 4 and helped beat the Yankees 4-3. Craig who got the win only pitched 4 innings with 8 K's.
3. Of these NL players, who was the last with 200 hits and 50 stolen bases in a season?

Answer: Craig Biggio

These are all members of the 200-50 Club. Biggio was the last in 1998 with the Astros as he had 210 hits along with 50 stolen bags. Johnson pulled his feat in 1996, then McGee and Gwynn in 1985.
4. Which of these pitchers hit (HBP) 13 batters in one game?

Answer: Nobody has done this

Nobody has ever accomplished this outrageous situation and probably will never in baseball history. Or is it outrageous?
5. The Los Angeles Dodgers have been noted for their rookies. How many Dodger rookies made the 2001 Rookie All-Star Team?

Answer: 0

No Dodgers got the honor in 2001 even after producing rookie greats in the past. The Indians had the most rookies make the team with two, C.C. Sabathia and Danys Baez.
6. Who did NOT throw a no-hitter as a rookie pitcher?

Answer: Fernando Valenzuela

Fernando despite all the honors in his rookie year did not throw a no-hitter. Dean the Cardinal threw his in 1934, Holloman of the Browns in 1953, and Belinsky with a halo over his head in 1962.
7. Besides Rickey Henderson, what other 20th Century player has produced 3 seasons with stealing over 100 bases?

Answer: Vince Coleman

Vince Coleman is the only other player to achieve this milestone 3 times in his career.
8. Who was the first rookie to get 200 hits in a season?

Answer: Lloyd Waner

In this strange stat, only 14 rookies have done this in baseball as of the end of the 2001 season with Suzuki being the last. Lloyd Waner was the very first in 1927 with 223. The other three listed all did their deed in 1929.
9. During the 20th century: which pitcher hit for the cycle (s,d,t,hr) in one game?

Answer: Nobody has done this

No pitcher has ever come close to this feat. Although the other three listed were great pitching hitters, the closest that they came was hitting the cycle in one season, the last being Hunter in 1971 with Oakland.
10. Whose home run blast won the 1955 All-Star game?

Answer: Stan Musial

It was this shot in the 12th inning to win it for the National League played in Milwaukee. A microscopic point of all the accomplishments in this great players career.
