Still, Deportivo found the strength to "rise from its ashes", and qualified alongside Monaco from group C, both teams having afterwards an excellent road through the knockout rounds.

The much talked Real vs Bayern didn't raise up to the expectations, especially since everyone went to compare it with the previous years memorable Real vs Manchester. But what it lacked in show, it compensated in the admirable abnegation of both teams.

The decisive goal proved to be the away goal scored in the first leg by Roberto Carlos, after an awful mistake made by goalkeeper Oliver Kahn. So the first match ended rather unjustly in a draw (1-1), since Bayern clearly had the better chances. The second leg went in favor of the Spanish (1-0), after Zidane's fine goal.

Manchester's dream had been shattered in the last minute of their knockout round with Porto. After an indecisive loss at Porto in the first leg (1-2), Manchester had been just moments away from qualifying to the next round. They took the lead in the 31st minute, after Paul Scholes powered a header in the Portuguese net and managed to keep this fragile advantage up to the very end of the regular time.

But in the 90th minute, Old Trafford went numb, as a rejected ball found a fast reacting Costinha, who sent the ball back towards the empty net, ending the game in dramatic fashion.

Deportivo vs. AC Milan will certainly be remembered as one of the most dramatic knockout rounds in the history of the UEFA Champions League. After AC Milan's reassuring victory (4-1) in the first leg, Deportivo's qualifying chances were close to zero, or at least that's what almost everyone thought, since a three goal deficit had never been remade before. But, the real "Super Depor" fans continued to hope and a miracle did happened at El Riazor.

In front of an euphoric home crowd, Deportivo played a magnificent game, scoring four times by Pandiani, Valeron, Luque, and Fran. Goalkeeper Molina also got a clean sheet to make the dream come true for the wonderful Spanish team.

Over-confidence led to the downfall of the "dreaded" Real Madrid. Both legs of their quarterfinal with Monaco displayed a high quality football, with many spectacular goals. Real Madrid took a two goal advantage after a 4-2 win in their home stadium. Things couldn't have gone better for them after Raul scored the first goal of the second leg, 35 minutes into the first half. Monaco's mission now seemed impossible, but they somehow pulled it off and turned the match into one of the most memorable victories.

The duel between Arsenal and Chelsea had produced yet another surprise. Arsenal entered the quarterfinals as the favorite, since the team hadn't lost a single match in the Premier League up to the confrontation with Chelsea (Arsenal would eventually win the Premier League, remaining unbeaten - a truly remarkable performance).

However, the UEFA Champions League trophy would have to wait until being displayed in Arsenal's showcase, and that's because Chelsea came up with an impressive effort to eliminate the "gunners".

The semi-final between Chelsea and Monaco was probably the best knockout round of the 03-04 UEFA Champions League. Both teams showed a very frantic approach of the game, adding quality to the football show. There were though controversial moments in both legs.

In the first leg, Monaco's defender, Zikos, was sent off the field rather unjustified. Surprisingly, the French scored two goals playing in inferiority, ending the game with a satisfactory 3-1. In the second leg, just as Chelsea was hoping again (they were leading 2-0, which assured them the qualification), came the very controversial goal scored by Monaco's Hugo Ibarra with the hand.

The final score (2-2) was set by the same inexhaustible Morientes.

Talking about bad inspiration, the loaning of Fernando Morientes to
Monaco, was probably the worst decision made by the Spanish club Real Madrid in the 2003-04 season. Morientes had an amazing season with the French squad in the UEFA Champions League, emerging the top scorer at the end of the competition, with 9 goals. The runner-ups were his teammate Prso (7 goals), Pandiani and Makaay (each with 6 goals).

Few would have bet at the beginning of the competition, that the final at Gelsenkirchen would line up FC Porto and AC Monaco. Yet, UEFA Champions League offered plenty of surprises over the years. The match itself was not the most spectacular you could get, but it was certainly a bitter duel between two hard-tried sides. Monaco's sparkling game was finally subdued by the better organized Porto. One of the key moments of the final was the replacement of Monaco captain Ludovic Giuly early in the first half. Brazilian Carlos Alberto scored the first goal for Porto in the 39th minute.

In the second half, the Monegasques desperately tried to get the equalizer, but all they did was to weaken their defense, allowing the Portuguese to score on two more occasions: Deco (71') and Alenitchev (75'). Overall, Porto was the better side and deserved the win.
