Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Unlike many Champions League winners, AC Milan began their campaign in the qualification stages. Milan defeated Czech side Slovan Liberec in the playoffs to qualify for the groups. How did Milan beat their qualification round opponents?

Answer: Away goals

Milan were hardly convincing in the qualification stages. After a 1-0 home victory in the first leg courtesy of Filippo Inzaghi's goal, the Czech underdogs won the second leg 2-1 and Inzaghi had to save the Rossoneri again.
2. The 32 clubs that competed in the first group stage were placed into four pots, with one team from each pot forming each group. Which pot were AC Milan in?

Answer: 3

The teams were assigned pots based upon their UEFA coefficient score, calculated by a club's performance in European competitions within the previous five years. Milan's score of 69.334 was only the 17th strongest out of the 32 teams, placing them as the strongest side in pot 3.

Italian clubs Juventus, Inter Milan (both pot 1) and AS Roma (pot 2) each placed above Milan in the seedings, as did clubs with considerably less European pedigree such as Deportivo La Coruna and Lyon (both pot 2).
3. Which European giant finished bottom of Group G, AC Milan's group in the first phase of the competition?

Answer: Bayern Munich

Bayern only managed to collect two points in six group games, failing to win a single game. AC Milan defeated Bayern in both group stage meetings between the two clubs, winning 2-1 on both occasions. Barcelona were the only team to win all six of their games at this stage in the 2002-03 Champions League. Ajax finished second in group D, finishing behind Inter Milan. Manchester United comfortably won group F, six points clear of second placed Bayer Leverkusen.
4. How many of AC Milan's twelve goals in the first group stage were scored by Italian players?

Answer: 8

Filippo Inzaghi took no time to send a message in the 2002-03 Champions League, scoring eight goals in the first four games of the competition including a hat-trick in a 4-0 win against Deportivo La Coruna in the second fixture. Milan's four other goals came from four different non-Italian players. Clarence Seedorf, Serginho, Andriy Shevchenko and Jon Dahl Tomasson were Milan's four other goalscorers in the first group stage.
5. How many 1-0 wins did AC Milan have in the second group stage?

Answer: 4

All of Milan's victories in the second phase came via a 1-0 scoreline. This included two wins against Lokomotiv Moscow, alongside a home win against defending European champions Real Madrid and an away victory against Germany's Borussia Dortmund. Milan lost their other two fixtures but won Group C anyway.
6. AC Milan scored just five goals in their six games in the second phase. How many teams in the second group stage (16 teams including Milan) scored less goals than Milan?

Answer: 1

Only Lokomotiv Moscow, the bottom team in Milan's group C, scored less in this phase, scoring just three times. Three other teams matched Milan's tally, including 2002 finalists Bayer Leverkusen, who had lost all six of their second group stage games.

In addition, Group D third placed team Basel also scored five times. Incredibly, the Rossoneri were not the only team to win their group on the back of a five goal display, with Spanish side Valencia also winning group B after scoring only five times.
7. In the quarter-finals against Ajax, AC Milan seemed on the cusp of elimination. After a goalless draw in Amsterdam, the Rossoneri were drawing 2-2 at home to the Dutch side, with Ajax set to advance on away goals. Who scored in the 91st minute to give Milan a 3-2 lead and send the team to the semi-finals?

Answer: Jon Dahl Tomasson

Milan had led in the second leg, taking a first half lead through Inzaghi's 30th minute goal and a second half goal by Andriy Shevchenko in the 65th minute. However, Jari Litmanen and Steven Pienaar equalised for the visitors. Tomasson's late goal was his third and final goal of the 2002-03 Champions League, with Milan only scoring one goal in their final three games of the competition.
8. AC Milan were drawn against fierce local rivals Inter in the semi-finals. Even though both clubs share the San Siro stadium, AC Milan were deemed winners on away goals after 0-0 and 1-1 draws between the sides. How was this administrative issue resolved?

Answer: More tickets were sold to the "home team" before each leg

Both legs still took place at the San Siro, with the home team receiving the majority of tickets for both legs. The designated home team were given more tickets to avoid the two sides having total parity, as one of the advantages of being at home is having the crowd on your side. AC Milan had the majority of tickets for the first leg, which was the 0-0 draw.

The 1-1 draw in the second leg (in which Inter was the "home" team) saw AC Milan advance on away goals.
9. The 2003 Champions League final between AC Milan and Juventus was the first time that two Italian clubs had met in a Champions League final. Out of the 22 players that started the game, how many were Italian?

Answer: 12

Both teams started with six Italians in their line-up. Juventus had Gianluigi Buffon, Ciro Ferrara, Mauro Camoranesi, Alessio Tacchinardi, Gianluca Zambrotta and Alessandro Del Piero. For Milan, their homegrown players included defenders Alessandro Costacurta, Alessandro Nesta and Paolo Maldini as well as Gennaro Gattuso, Andrea Pirlo and Filippo Inzaghi.
10. Milan won their sixth Champions League title by defeating Juventus 3-2 on penalties after a goalless draw. How many European/intercontinental trophies had the club won following the conclusion of the 2002-03 Champions League?

Answer: 14

AC Milan won its sixth European Cup with this win in the 2002-03 campaign. The club had also won the European Cup Winners' Cup on two occasions, taking the 1968 and 1973 titles. The Rossoneri had three European Super Cups to their name, winning the cup in 1989, 1990 and 1994. The 1969, 1989 and 1990 Intercontinental Cups were also part of Milan's trophy cabinet, bringing the total to 14.
