The original punishments were far more severe than the eventual ones. At first, Milan had 44 points removed from their 2005-06 record and 15 taken from their 2006-07 tally. The club was also kicked out of the 2006-07 Champions League.

The 30 point deduction is directly linked to the club being forced to enter at the third qualifying round, as the club originally had 88 points, second behind Juventus (who were relegated for their role in the scandal). The team ended on 58 points, which was only enough for third place, hence starting from the qualifiers. The team did start 2006-07's Serie A campaign with a points deduction, but it was eight points rather than ten.

Kaka scored five of Milan's eight goals in the group stage, tied for most in the group stage alongside Chelsea's Didier Drogba. While Milan did put in good defensive displays in the group phase, conceding only four goals in their six games, Arsenal, Lyon and Bayern Munich only conceded three goals. Milan lost their final two group games, first losing 1-0 away against AEK Athens before losing 2-0 at the San Siro against Lille.

Inzaghi only scored once in the group stage, netting the opener in Milan's 3-0 victory on the opening matchday against AEK Athens. Gourcuff's only goal in the groups also came in that game, with the young Frenchman netting AC Milan's second goal in the game. Gilardino scored in Milan's 4-1 victory over Anderlecht, although his contribution was overshadowed by Kaka's hat trick in the same game.

Odemwingie, who joined West Bromwich Albion in 2010, was playing for Liile during the 2006-07 season. He scored the first goal as Lille shocked the Italian giants by a 2-0 scoreline. He also scored in a 2-2 draw with Anderlecht and helped Lille reach the round of 16, where they lost to Manchester United.

Jarosik's close ranged effort was charged down by Maldini's raised arm, leading to calls from the Celtic team for a penalty. Ultimately, it was decided by referee Konrad Plautz that it was not a penalty.

The Rossoneri's hero of the hour came in the form of Kaka, who continued his incredible form from the group stages. He scored a brilliant solo goal three minutes into extra time which was enough to settle the tie.

The game was well poised at 2-2 after the first leg at the San Siro, with Bayern arguably the slight favourites heading into the second leg. A poor Bayern clearance gave Kaka space to find a precise pass to Seedorf, who tucked in the game's opening goal after 27 minutes. Just four minutes later, a deft flick from the outside of Seedorf's right boot unlocked the Bayern defence, with Filippo Inzaghi scoring the game's second goal. Milan won the game 2-0.

Milan did not have a particularly great record against English teams in the Champions League heading into 2006-07's tournament, winning just two of their previous seven matches. In all fairness, they only lost once. (If counting the 2005 final as a draw).

Milan's only previous two victories actually came against United in the round of 16 in the 2004-05 tournament, winning 1-0 in both legs. The team's only loss was in the first group stage of the 2000-01 tournament, a 1-0 defeat to Leeds United.

While Vidic was undoubtedly one of the world's best defenders at the time, he was recovering from a broken collarbone and some pundits saw Vidic's inclusion in the team as rushed. Vidic was ultimately unable to handle Milan's ruthless attack, and even slipped on a basic pass from Gabriel Heinze which inadvertently led to a goal for Clarence Seedorf that made it 2-0.

The Olympic Stadium played host to the 1994 final between AC Milan and Barcelona, where the Rossoneri thrashed their Catalan opponents 4-0 to win their fifth European Cup. The 1993 final between Milan and Marseille was at an Olympic stadium, but it was the one in Munich. Both the 1990 and 1995 finals took place in Vienna, Austria with the 1990 final taking place at Prater Stadium and the 1995 showpiece being held at Ernst-Happel-Stadion.

Gattuso was a key part of Milan's midfield in the final, playing the full 90 minutes. Kaka echoed the sentiment that the loss in 2005 had made the victory even sweeter. Inzaghi, who scored both of Milan's goals in the final, described the feeling of scoring in the final as "special" after missing the 2005 final.
