Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the manager of Real Madrid heading into the 1999-2000 season?

Answer: John Toshack

Toshack replaced Hiddink as manager in February 1999. He did not last long and was sacked in November that year. Toshack was also manager of the club between July 1989 and November 1990, winning a La Liga title with the club. Capello had two single year spells with Real Madrid, leading Los Merengues to La Liga championships in 1997 and 2007.

Heynckes succeeded Capello in 1997, leading Real to its seventh European crown in 1998.
2. Which player was Real Madrid's most expensive purchase of the summer transfer window in 1999?

Answer: Nicolas Anelka

Anelka was bought by Los Blancos ("The Whites") due to the French forward's good form for Premier League giants Arsenal. He would only spend one season at the Bernabeu, scoring two goals in his nineteen appearances.

Baljic, who had spent the previous season at Fenerbahce, would also prove to be an expensive mistake, scoring just once in eleven appearances. McManaman arrived on a free transfer from Liverpool and played an instrumental role in Real's Champions League campaign. Figo's transfer took place in the summer of 2000, not 1999.
3. How many points did Real Madrid register in the opening group stage of their 1999-2000 Champions League campaign?

Answer: 13

Los Blancos earned 13 points from their six games in the opening group stage. The team registered home and away victories against Norwegian club Molde FK while also winning its home games against Portuguese giants Porto and Greek champions Olympiakos. However, the team only drew in Greece and lost to Porto on the road. Real finished the phase at the top of its group, with Porto also advancing to the next stage in second place.

Between 1999 and 2003, the Champions League had two group phases, rather than just one, with six matches in each.
4. How many clean sheets did Real Madrid keep in the second group phase?

Answer: One

Real's defensive performances took a bad turn in the second group phase. In six games, twelve goals were conceded by the leaky defence. This included 4-1 and 4-2 losses to the previous year's Champions League runners-up Bayern Munich. Only Bordeaux had a worse defensive record than Los Merengues during the second group stage.

The team's solitary clean sheet came in a 1-0 win over Rosenborg.
5. After the two group stages had been completed, how many different Real Madrid players had scored at least one goal for the team in their Champions League campaign?

Answer: 8

In twelve games, the Real Madrid squad had contributed to 25 goals. The team had 26 goals in total, but one goal was courtesy of an own goal scored by Porto's Emilio Peixe. Raul was the team's top scorer with seven goals, while Fernando Morientes also contributed five goals. Brazilian duo Savio and Robert Carlos scored four each and Ivan Helguera chipped in with two goals. Guti, Christian Karembeu and Fernando Hierro each had one goal.
6. Real Madrid drew the defending champions Manchester United in the quarter-finals. After a goalless first leg at the Bernabeu, which United player scored an own goal in the first half of the second leg, contributing to a 3-2 Real win?

Answer: Roy Keane

Keane's own goal was the only goal in the first half, with a second half brace from Raul giving Los Blancos a 3-0 lead. United did make a valiant attempt to come back, with David Beckham and Paul Scholes strikes bringing the game back to 3-2, but Real held on and advanced to the semi-finals.
7. Which player scored his only two Real Madrid goals in both legs of the semi-final against Bayern Munich?

Answer: Nicolas Anelka

Anelka's two goals proved to be crucial in taking Los Merengues to the Champions League final. Real won the first leg 2-0 at the Bernabeu before a 2-1 loss in Munich. Salgado spent a decade in Madrid, scoring four times in 254 appearances for the club. Karanka played 97 times for the club between 1997 and 2002.
8. In which stadium was the 2000 Champions League final held?

Answer: Stade de France

The Stade de France is the French national stadium and the eighth largest stadium in Europe. The stadium also hosted the 2006 final between Barcelona and Arsenal. Ernst Happel Stadion was the host of the 1995 final between Ajax and AC Milan, also hosting the 1964 and 1987 finals under its former name, the Praterstadion. Wembley, which re-opened in 2007, has hosted seven European Cup finals as of 2019. Munich's Olympiastadion, designed to host the 1972 Summer Olympics, held the 1979, 1993 and 1997 finals.
9. What was the final score of the 2000 Champions League final between Real Madrid and Valencia?

Answer: 3-0

Real comfortably defeated Valencia in the final. Morientes opened the scoring in the first half before Steve McManaman and Raul added the finishing touches in the second half. With this win, Los Blancos sealed their 8th European Cup and the club had won two of the last three Champions Leagues (1998 and 2000).

This was the first time in history that two clubs from the same country met in the European Cup final.
10. La Liga was won by Deportivo La Coruna in 1999-2000. Where did Real Madrid finish?

Answer: Fifth

Real struggled to put together a solid domestic campaign. A mixture of management turnover, poor recruitment and focusing on European football contributed to Los Blancos only managing to score 62 points in 38 La Liga games, missing the Champions League places. Thankfully for fans of the club, Real's European glory qualified the club for the 2000-01 Champions League anyway. Barcelona finished in second place, Valencia in third and Real Zaragoza took fourth spot.
