Mostly, Eddie worked as a bartender in a Chicago night club that hired only little people to work.

As a result of his drinking problem, Eddie had a reputation for being in vicious bar fights. He was found in his bed dead by a family member. He had obviously been beaten and robbed but managed somehow to make it to his room. The Chicago Police Department declined to investigate further because of Eddie's reputation.

The only representative of Major League baseball to attend his funereal was Bob Cain, the pitcher he had faced, who had driven 300 miles to be present. Bill Veeck said he was too busy.
