Although Schumacher was banned, he was allowed to keep his race wins which he picked up throughout the season. Jacques Villeneuve went on to finish the race, thereby winning the championship.

Juan Pablo Montoya, Antonio Pizzonia, both Minardi brothers, and Jenson Button all crashed here as well as Schumacher. It should also be noted that Mark Webber spun here, but he rejoined the race unscathed. Fisichella eventually won the race in his Jordan after the race was red-flagged, the decision eventually being made in the courts after Kimi Raikonnen was originally given the race win.
