Question 1 of 10
1. It was my first race in F1. Slightly nervous and after a shaky qualifying (where I was placed thirteenth on the grid out of the 22 drivers), I was looking forward to a better race. As the five lights went out, I was off and running. Suddenly in front of me, a driver hit a slow moving car and soon cars were literally flying all over the place. There was a massive pile up at the start line. Avoiding this mess, I happened to see a track marshal waving a flag. The session was stopped. What colour flag was the marshal waving? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. The stewards decided to restart the race; only four cars couldn't compete again because their spare car was taken by their team's lead drivers. The race got underway cleanly this time. Then on lap 12(out of the 65 laps), I was beside the 'action' again. In front of me was an 'overtaking' move gone bad. There were two cars in a real bad state. I knew the safety car had come out because the marshal was waving a particular type of flag. What flag was the marshal waving? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. While following the safety car, I was quite relaxed - enjoying the scenery as we went along. The marshals were waving a flag which meant that there was no overtaking allowed (as long as this flag was waved). What flag was the marshal waving? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. After a few laps and 15 cars left (One car had an engine problem and retired from the race), we were back to racing (the safety car went back into the pits). What flags were the marshals waving now? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. On lap 24, I attempted a stunning move at overtaking. After some time, my pit crew told me through the radio that I was being investigated for unsportsmanlike behaviour. I got confirmation soon when I saw the marshal waving a particular flag with my car number next to it. What flag was being waved? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. After getting a drive through penalty, I rejoined the pack in 9th place, right behind my arch-rival, who was also making his debut. After some time, I saw the tail of his car coming off. I told my pit crew immediately who, in turn, informed the stewards. I was 'delighted' to see the marshals waving a flag with rival's car number next to it! What type of a flag was being waved? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. My rival seemed to have no intention of going to the pits to remedy his problem; some time later I saw the marshal waving another flag at my rival. This flag indicated that he had broken the rules and must pit immediately. What flag was being waved? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. With that pain behind my back, I continued my racing. On lap 46, I had to slow my car when I saw the marshal was waving a red and yellow striped flag. Which of the following could be the reason for showing this flag? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Lap 54: The race leader was right behind me because I saw the marshal waving the blue flag. How many blue flags can I ignore before letting the faster through (ignoring more than this number could get me penalised)? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Lap 64: Having overtaken two more cars, I was in 6th place (one lap behind the leader). I would soon see the Chequered flag in my debut race. What colour is the Chequered flag in F1? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: Red Flag

A Red Flag means that session is stopped; this may be due to a major accident or if conditions are unsafe for driving etc where the race may not be able to restart in a few laps time (and in a situation where the cars can't move through the track due to the pile of debris etc lying on the ground). If a race is stopped, then it is up to the stewards to decide whether to restart the race. If the race is stopped immediately, then it is likely that the race is restarted again.

However if the race is stopped much later in the game, then the driver who crossed the finish line first (the lap before) is declared the winner.

This is primarily due to the time limit law for each race.

Answer: White Flag

A white flag indicates that there is a slow moving car on the track like a safety car, tow-truck or even an ambulance. A yellow flag merely means that there is no overtaking allowed (it may be shown even if a safety car doesn't come out).
3. While following the safety car, I was quite relaxed - enjoying the scenery as we went along. The marshals were waving a flag which meant that there was no overtaking allowed (as long as this flag was waved). What flag was the marshal waving?

Answer: Yellow Flag

A yellow flag means that there is no overtaking allowed due to unsafe conditions. Overtaking or aggressive driving might only worsen the situation. It is always on when the safety car is out on the track.
4. After a few laps and 15 cars left (One car had an engine problem and retired from the race), we were back to racing (the safety car went back into the pits). What flags were the marshals waving now?

Answer: Green Flag

A green flag means that all hazards and conditions unsafe for driving in the course are cleared or minimized to the extent that safe driving is possible.
5. On lap 24, I attempted a stunning move at overtaking. After some time, my pit crew told me through the radio that I was being investigated for unsportsmanlike behaviour. I got confirmation soon when I saw the marshal waving a particular flag with my car number next to it. What flag was being waved?

Answer: Black and White (with diagonal halves) Flag

There are rules in F1 which types of overtaking moves are allowed and certain types of overtaking are deemed unsportsmanlike (dangerous driving) because they could result in an accident.

Answer: Black flag with an orange circle in centre

A black flag with an orange disc means that a car has a mechanical or technical problem (like parts coming off the body of the car). On seeing this flag, the driver must make a pit-stop to rectify the error or he will be penalised.
7. My rival seemed to have no intention of going to the pits to remedy his problem; some time later I saw the marshal waving another flag at my rival. This flag indicated that he had broken the rules and must pit immediately. What flag was being waved?

Answer: Black Flag

A black flag is shown at a driver when he has a problem or has broken the rules and has not chosen to rectify it. Prolonged ignoring of this flag might result in disqualification of the driver.
8. With that pain behind my back, I continued my racing. On lap 46, I had to slow my car when I saw the marshal was waving a red and yellow striped flag. Which of the following could be the reason for showing this flag?

Answer: Either water or oil (or both)

Red and yellow striped means that the track is slippery due to oil spill (from a car) or water (due to rain). It is shown to inform the driver that he could lose his control over the car while driving through that area. Generally a yellow flag is also waved along with this.
9. Lap 54: The race leader was right behind me because I saw the marshal waving the blue flag. How many blue flags can I ignore before letting the faster through (ignoring more than this number could get me penalised)?

Answer: 3

A lapped car must move over within his seeing of a maximum of three blue flags. Generally the penalty for ignoring this flag would be either a drive-through penalty or a 10 second stop-go penalty AND a 'finger sign' by the faster car's driver.
10. Lap 64: Having overtaken two more cars, I was in 6th place (one lap behind the leader). I would soon see the Chequered flag in my debut race. What colour is the Chequered flag in F1?

Answer: Black and White Squares

The Chequered flag marks the end of the race (successful completion) for a driver. The colour(design) of this raceflag is the same in almost all motor-sports games.
