Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which team won every race apart from the U.S. Grand Prix in 1950?

Answer: Alfa Romeo

The U.S. Grand Prix was in fact the Indy 500, but in those days the teams did not have to go to every race and all the top drivers decided not to go that year. Ferrari and the small Talbot Lago team could not keep up with Alfa Romeo, and Mclaren were not around in 1950.
2. Who was the first British Formula One world champion?

Answer: Mike Hawthorn

Mike Hailwood raced in the 1980s, Sterling Moss was the most successful Brit never to be world champion and Phil Hill was American. Tragically Mike Hawthorn died on January 22nd 1959 after crashing his Jaguar which he was racing against a friend on the Guildford bypass.
3. Who was the first driver to be world champion on two wheels and four?

Answer: John Surtees

Mike Hailwood did make the transition from two wheels to four, but was never quite as successful as Surtees. Jack Brabham was the first man to win a world championship in a car of his own manufacture. Jim Clark didn't do competitive motorbike racing.
4. Something happened that stopped Jackie Stewart from racing in his 100th Grand Prix. What was it?

Answer: Death of his teammate in qualifying

Francois Cervert was the unfortunate teammate and despite the fact they knew they would lose the constructors title if they withdrew, Tyrrell withdrew from the race at Watkins Glen, USA.
5. With which team did Jody Scheckter enjoy World Championship success?

Answer: Ferrari

Scheckter became World Champion in 1979. Scheckter did race for McLaren for two years (1972-73), but did not score a single point there. Williams did not win a World Championship until 1982 and Lotus' days of success were long over. In 1980, Ferrari started on a downward spyral that would last until 2000.
6. Who did Gilles Villeneuve vow never to speak to again?

Answer: Didier Pironi

Two weeks after falling out with Pironi, Villeneuve crashed into Jochen Mass's car and cartwheeled over the barriers and was then thrown out of his car in his attempt to go faster than his team mate. (8 May 1982) Enzo Ferrari was boss of Ferrari and Jacques Villeneuve was Gilles's son, who was only 11 years old at the time of his father's death. Pironi was later killed in a powerboating accident.
7. What team did Nigel Mansell drive for in 1985?

Answer: Williams Honda

McLaren's drivers were Alain Prost and Niki Lauda, Ligier's drivers were Jacques Laffite, Philip Streiff, and Andrea de Cesaris, while Ferrari's drivers were Rene Arnoux, Stefan Johansson, and Michael Alboreto (In those days it was quite common for a team to have 3 or 4 race drivers).
8. After the death of Colin Chapman in 1982, who replaced him as Lotus team boss?

Answer: Peter Warr

Lotus never achieved the same sort of success again and folded in 1992. Jim Clark had been dead for some years, Adrian Newey and Flavio Briatore had not yet arrived on the F1 scene.
9. Which team did Ayrton Senna first drive for?

Answer: Toleman

Senna's debut came in the Brazilian Grand Prix of 1984.
10. The Super Aguri team in 2006, had announced who was to partner Takuma Sato at the team. Who was it?

Answer: Yuji Ide

Anthony Davidson was in question for the drive, but in the end he decided he wanted to stay at Honda. Aguri Suzuki was team boss and Jenson Button had never been linked to the team.
