Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was the ICC Cricket World Cup held in 2019?

Answer: England & Wales

The ICC Cricket World Cup in 2019 had been held in England and Wales. There were a total of 11 venues where the games were played.
2. Who was the highest wicket taker in the World Cup, breaking Glenn McGrath's records for the most wickets in a single world cup?

Answer: Mitchell Starc

Glenn McGrath previously held the record with 26 wickets taken in the World Cup event held in 2007. Mitchell Starc proved to be the lynchpin of the Australian bowling attack , claiming 27 wickets in total - having an important role in taking his team to the semi-finals.

The 27 wickets include two 5-wicket hauls in a single match, taking 5 for 26 runs and 5 for 46 against New Zealand and West Indies respectively.
3. How many matches could a team play at maximum (that is, if it reaches the final) at the 2019 World Cup?

Answer: 11

The Round Robin format was applied in the 2019 Cricket World Cup , for the first time after 1992. This resulted in a whopping 48 matches, making for a long event, with 10 teams playing each other (nine games) and the top four competing in the semi-finals and final (another two games). While this did bring some better fairness, 4 matches were washed out and several matches were adversely affected by rain.
The 2015 tournament had 14 teams in two groups of seven (six games), plus quarters, semis and the final (another three games for a total of nine).
4. Who was the highest run getter in the 2019 World Cup, also breaking the record for most centuries in a single World Cup?

Answer: Rohit Sharma

While the other first-choice Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan had to leave due to injury , Rohit Sharma led the way for Team India scoring 648 runs. (Just 1 run more than David Warner). He tallied a whopping 5 centuries, with his highest score being his blistering 140 against Pakistan.
5. Which team topped the points table at league stage of the 2019 World Cup?

Answer: India

India topped the points table with 7 wins, 1 loss and 1 match abandoned - accumulating to 15 points. Australia came second with 7 wins and 2 losses.
However, coming to me as a huge heartbreak as an Indian fan, India lost the semi-final to New Zealand by a paltry 18 runs.
6. Which player broke the record for the most sixes in a single ODI match, resulting in his team scoring the highest cumulative score for the World Cup?

Answer: Eoin Morgan

Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers and Rohit Sharma all held the joint record with 16 sixes in their respective innings prior to this knock.
Morgan fired 148 runs off just 71 balls, in an innings with 17 sixes and 4 fours. He spoiled the day for the opponent world-class Afghan spinner Rashid Khan, who was hit around the park eventually conceding 110 runs in his 9 overs.
England scored 397 runs for 6 wickets, going on to beat Afghanistan by 150 runs.
No wonder the English captain was the leading six hitter in the tournament!
7. Which bowler had the best bowling figures for a match, with 6 wickets for just 35 runs?

Answer: Shaheen Shah Afridi

Although Pakistan's hopes to make their place in the semi-finals were dashed due to their absymally low net run rate, 19-year old left-arm pacer Shaheen Afridi showed some prospects for the future. He claimed a 6-wicket haul for just 35 runs - as Pakistan scuttled Bangladesh out to win by 94 runs.
8. Who was the best all rounder at the 2019 World Cup?

Answer: Shakib Al Hasan

Shakib Al Hasan scored 606 runs with the bat, and picked up 11 wickets with the ball. His spectacular performance consisted of two centuries and a five-wicket haul, making Bangladesh fancy their chances to qualify for the knockout stage again.
9. Which cricketer won the Player of the Series award?

Answer: Kane Williamson

Kane Williamson proved to be the standing pillar of Kiwi hopes, scoring 578 runs in the World Cup. He was given the award for his excellent leadership for the New Zealand side, along with his usual work of rescuing New Zealand with the bat.
10. At the final match at the iconic Lords' stadium, England managed to edge New Zealand to claim the title. What was the victory margin?

Answer: Both match AND super-over tied ; England won on a countback by hitting more boundaries

Could there be a more nail-biting match for a World Cup final! New Zealand scored 241 runs for 8 wickets in the first innings, while Ben Stokes, whom was eventually awarded the 'Player of the Match' award after ending up on the winning side, scored a gruelling and enduring inning of 84 not out pulling England ashore but not over the line as they were bowled out for 241 runs after completing their 50 overs. But he did not leave this job undone either!

According to the rules, the winner was now to be established through a super over. Stokes again scored 8 runs off 3 balls, as England put up 15 without any wickets falling in their over. In reply, in a scene involving a last-ball run out, New Zealand too scored 15 runs in their over! However, be it just or not, England won the match by virtue of hitting more boundaries. (They hit 24 against New Zealand's 16)
What a stroke of misfortune for New Zealand, to be this close and miss out! And what a moment for Stokes, for whom many felt that he has achieved his personal redemption for conceding four sixes to Carlos Brathwaite in the 2016 T20 World Cup final, losing England the game then - and then winning a title at home!
