Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first race at Darlington Raceway was the 1950 Southern 500. It was won by Johnny Mantz. What was interesting about his win?

Answer: He never changed tires

Mantz knew that the soft tires that most of the other competitors would use would tear up quickly on the asphalt; Mantz used heavy truck tires, which made him much slower, but he never had to change the tires, saving several minutes per pit stop.
2. How many Winston Cup championships did Harry Gant win?

Answer: 0

Despite having 18 WC wins, Gant never won a championship. He came in the top 5 six times, though.
3. When and what year did Dale Earnhardt win his first race?

Answer: Bristol, 1979

It was his first win of two during his rookie year.
4. Where and what year was Dale Earnhardt's last win?

Answer: Talladega, 2000

He came from 18th to 1st in 5 laps.
5. Who won the 1992 Winston Cup championship?

Answer: Alan Kulwicki

Alan never got to defend his championship; he and Davey Allison were both killed in separate aircraft accidents in 1993.
6. Who won the 1989 Winston Cup championship?

Answer: Rusty Wallace

He won by 12 points over Dale Earnhardt.
7. How many laps did they run at the February Daytona race in 1974?

Answer: 180

Because of the gas crisis that year, the Daytona 500 was shortened to 450 miles. It was won by Richard Petty.
8. Dale Earnhardt won his last championship in 1994 with owner Richard Childress. How many championships did they win together?

Answer: 6

Dale also won one championship with Rod Osterlund in 1980, only his second full Winston Cup season. Dale was making a run at a record 8th championship season as a driver when he was killed in the 2001 Daytona 500.
9. What is the fewest number of wins any driver has won in a year that he also won the championship?

Answer: 1

Four drivers have done it: Bell Rexford in 1950, Ned Jarrett in 1961, Benny Parsons in 1973, and Matt Kenseth did it too.
10. How many races have had Jeff Gordon and Richard Petty driving at the same time?

Answer: 1

The 1992 Hooters 500 in Atlanta. It was the King's last race, and Wonderboy's first.
