Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. All registered Thoroughbreds are descended from what three foundation sire's?

Answer: The Darley Arabian, the Godolphin Arabian, and the Byerly Turk

The Darley Arabian was born in 1700, the Godolphin Arabian in 1724, and the Byerly Turk in 1679. All foals registered with the Jockey Club are directly descended from one of these horses.
2. In what year did Belmont Park open for racing?

Answer: 1905

The Belmont Stakes was held at Jerome Park from 1867 until 1904. In 1905, with the opening of Belmont Park the race was moved to the new track. So, the race came before the track.
3. Jockey Earl Sande won how many Belmont Stakes between 1920 and 1930?

Answer: 5

He won in 1921 on Grey Lag, in 1923 on Zev, in 1924 on Mad Play, in 1927 on Chance Shot, and in 1930 aboard Triple Crown winner Gallant Fox.
4. Sir Barton was the first horse to win the Triple Crown. Who was the second horse to win it?

Answer: Gallant Fox

Gallant Fox won the Triple Crown in 1930. He also sired the third Triple Crown winner, Omaha, who won it 1935.
5. All starters in the 2003 Kentucky Derby had what horse somewhere in their pedigree?

Answer: Northern Dancer

When he retired from his stud career Northern Dancer had sired a record 146 stakes winners and 23 champions. Not bad for a horse who was almost gelded as a yearling.
6. What jockey rode Colonial Affair to victory in the 1993 Belmont Stakes?

Answer: Julie Krone

Julie was the first female jockey to win a Triple Crown Race.
7. What horse denied Pleasant Colony a Triple Crown sweep?

Answer: Summing

In 1981, after winning the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, Pleasant Colony was poised to win the Belmont Stakes and the Triple Crown. But alas, Summing won and Pleasant Colony came in third behind Highland Blade.
8. What Hall of Fame jockey won the Eclipse Award in 1998, the George Woolf Memorial Jockey award in 1996, and was aboard the third filly to win the Kentucky Derby?

Answer: Gary Stevens

Gary Stevens has ridden three Kentucky Derby winners including Thunder Gulch (1995), Silver Charm (1997), and filly Winning Colors (1988).
9. What winning horse ran the second fastest time in Kentucky Derby history?

Answer: Monarchos

In 2001, Monarchos ran the mile and a quarter race in 1:59.97. This is second only to Secretariat's winning time of 1:59 2/5 in 1973. Sham finished second in 1973 with a time of 1:59.90.
10. 2003 Belmont Stakes winner, Empire Maker, was sired by what Kentucky Derby winner?

Answer: Unbridled

Empire Maker was the favorite to win the Kentucky Derby, but bruised his hoof and missed a workout in the week preceeding the Derby. Even so, he ran a close second to Funny Cide. He came back five weeks later and redeemed himself by beating Funny Cide, Ten Most Wanted, and three other horses, spoiling Funny Cide's bid for the Triple Crown.
