Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What team did Virginia play in the first ever game at University Hall?

Answer: Kentucky

Kentucky, led by legendary coach Adolf Rupp, soundly beat the Cavs 99-73 on November 21, 1965.
2. What place did the Cavs call home prior to moving into U-Hall in 1965?

Answer: Memorial Gymnasium

"Mem Gym" as it is affectionately called, was where the Cavs played just before moving to University Hall. Known as a tough place to play because of the closeness of the spectators to the court, Memorial was deemed no longer adequate to compete with other teams in the ACC. In fact, the smallest crowds at U-Hall were still larger than Mem Gym could accommodate.
3. How many points per game did UVA alum Ralph Sampson average in his NBA career?

Answer: 15.4

Sampson played a total of 9 seasons in the NBA. After being drafted by Houston, he also played for Golden State, Sacramento, and Washington. Sampson's career was beset with injuries however, and only in his first two seasons (1984-1985) did he manage to play a full 82-game schedule.
4. The Portland Trail Blazers drafted UVA great Jeff Lamp with what pick in the first round of the 1981 NBA draft?

Answer: 15

Lamp played a total of 6 seasons in the NBA and scored just over 5 points per game. The Blazers passed over the likes of Larry Nance, Eddie Johnson, and Danny Ainge when they selected Lamp.
5. Rick Carlisle was drafted with the 23rd and last pick of the 3rd round of the 1984 NBA draft by the Boston Celtics. What other Virginia player was actually drafted ahead of Carlisle?

Answer: Othell Wilson

Wilson was taken with the 11th pick of the 2nd round by the Golden State Warriors. Wilson played just 2 seasons in the NBA, averaging 4.2 points per game.
6. How many times was Ralph Sampson a first team All-American?

Answer: 3

While Sampson was an All American in all 4 years with UVA, he was a first team All-American in 1981, 1982, and 1983.
7. Virginia won the last game they played in U-Hall.

Answer: False

Virginia lost its last game in U-Hall to Maryland by a score of 71-70 on March 5, 2006. There were technically 2 more games played in U-Hall. They were played by the women's team who hosted and won 2 Women's NIT games there.
8. What player in 1976, led Virginia to its first ACC tournament championship, and its first NCAA tournament appearance?

Answer: Wally Walker

Walker's number 41 hangs from the rafters in John Paul Jones Coliseum. Walker, who averaged 22.1 pts per game during the 75-76 season, scored 21 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in leading the Cavs to the ACC Tournament Title over North Carolina in 1976.
9. Against what team did Ralph Sampson play his final ACC regular season game?

Answer: Maryland

In fact, it was Sampson's put back of his own missed free throw that provided the final margin of defeat, 83-81, over Maryland in University Hall in 1983.
10. What team did the Cavs beat in the 1995 Sweet 16 to advance to the Elite 8 where they would fall short against Arkansas?

Answer: Kansas

The Cavs were able to put together a great performance in beating a Kansas squad led by big man Greg Ostertag. The Cavs then fell victim to second-seed Arkansas, led by Corliss Williamson. They fell just short of reaching the Final Four for the first time since their early 1980s glory.
