Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I am a pitcher who has been a part of the Baltimore Orioles, Houston Astros, Philadelphia Phillies, and the Arizona Diamondbacks before coming to the Red Sox. I led the 2004 AL with 21 wins. Who am I?

Answer: Curt Schilling

Curt Schilling was one of the biggest acquisitions the Red Sox made over that postseason. Schilling gave one of the best pitching performances of his lifetime in game six of the ALCS against the Yankees, when doctors used sutures to keep a tendon in his right ankle in place.
2. I was on only one team before coming to Boston. I led the AL in 2004 with 43 home runs and I received a very important honor in October. Am I David Ortiz?

Answer: No

The person was Manny Ramirez. Manny started off his professional career in 1993 with the Cleveland Indians, playing only 22 games. He continued in Cleveland until 2000 when he came to Boston. Manny won the World Series MVP Trophy in 2004. David Ortiz was also only on one team before the Red Sox (Minnesota Twins) but ended the season with 41 home runs.
3. I was a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Montreal Expos before becoming a Red Sox. I am a dynamic pitcher who struck out 227 batters in the 2004 season. Who am I?

Answer: Pedro Martinez

Pedro was an intimidating pitcher and part of the Sox from 1998 to 2004. He struck out 227 batters in 2004, second only to Johan Santana (Minnesota Twins) who struck out 265.
4. 2004 was my first year on the Red Sox, and although I only had three home runs in my 96 games, one was an inside-the-park. Who am I?

Answer: Pokey Reese

Pokey was a very good defensive shortstop for the Red Sox in 2004 while Garciaparra was injured. Although he only had three home runs during the season, on May 8th he hit an inside-the-park home run and followed that up with another home run his next at bat.
5. I was not a starting pitcher, but I was very benificial to the Red Sox season. I ended the 2004 season with a 2.17 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 83 innings of work. Am I Keith Foulke?

Answer: Yes

Foulke had a very impressive first year with the Red Sox and a huge part of them winning the World Series. He had 32 saves in 39 save opportunities, and only gave up 15 walks.
6. 2004 was my breakout year as a powerful and intimidating hitter. I have a lot in common with my good friend on the team, including my home country and my loads of home runs. In October, I became a hero and a very important player after I crushed a couple very important hits and now have a nickname the Sox fans love to cheer. Who am I?

Answer: David Ortiz

"Big Papi" spent his second year in a Red Sox uniform as undeniably the best designated hitter in baseball. Ortiz tied Paul Konerko of the White Sox with 41 home runs in the season, second only to his fellow Dominican Republic native Manny Ramirez. After a couple clutch hits, including a walk-off home run, Ortiz won the MVP of the ALDS against the Anaheim Angels.
7. I was a starting pitcher with the Red Sox in 2004. I was the only Red Sox starter to go 3-0 in the postseason. Who am I?

Answer: Derek Lowe

Derek Lowe was one of the five good starters the Red Sox had in 2004 (Schilling, Martinez, Wakefield, and Arroyo being the others). In the postseason, Lowe pitched 19.1 innings in four games. He went 3-0 with a 1.86 ERA, and gave up only three earned runs the entire postseason.
8. Although Ted Williams wasn't with us when the Red Sox finally became World Champs, he was undeniably one of the best baseball players who ever played the game. Another great baseball player was obviously Babe Ruth. Did "Teddy Ballgame" end his career with a higher on base percentage and lifetime average than Ruth though?

Answer: Yes

Although Ruth overshadowed Williams in the home run department (714 to 521), Ted beat him in on base percentage (.481 to Ruth's 470). Williams also beat the Babe's average by a single point (.344 to Ruth's .343). Ted was on the Red Sox his entire career from 1939 to 1960.
9. I came to the Red Sox halfway through the season and only played in 45 games. I became a hero in a very important October game thanks to my speedy legs while pinch-running for Kevin Millar. Who am I?

Answer: Dave Roberts

This was game four of the ALCS against the New York Yankees. While pinch-running for Millar in the bottom of the ninth inning, Roberts swiftly stole second base and then scored on a single by Bill Mueller to tie the game at 4-4. Red Sox Manager, Terry Francona, has said that was the turning point of the series. That stolen base led the Red Sox to win that game, plus the next seven in a row to become the 2004 World Series Champions.
10. Which two Red Sox players were involved in the very last out of the World Series, making them World Champs?

Answer: Foulke and Mientkiewicz

The last out was a ball hit by the Cardinal's Edgar Renteria right back to the pitcher, Keith Foulke. Foulke then flipped the ball to Mientkiewicz who was playing first base to end the season, the series, and the "Curse of the Bambino". Renteria was wearing #3, Babe Ruth's number.

Another interesting occurrence was that for a brief moment during that game, Gabe Kapler, who was playing right field, went over to talk to Johnny Damon in centerfield. Kapler was wearing #19 and Damon was wearing #18 so for a moment it showed "1918" in the outfield, which was of course the last year the Red Sox won the World Series before 2004.
