Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was the first ever World Cup held, and who won it?

Answer: host: Uruguay, winner: Uruguay

Yes, Uruguay hosted and won the World Cup. But why in South America was the tournament hosted so far away from Europe? The reason was that Uruguay were the reigning Olympic champions, which made them the 'unofficial' World Champions at the time. 1930 was also a special year for Uruguay, that year being the 100th year of independence, so having the first tournament there was only fair.

It was so far away from Europe that only 13 teams entered.
2. The 1934 World Cup was held in Italy. Who won the trophy?

Answer: Italy

Again the host country won the competition. 36 teams entered this time, an improvement from the 1930 World Cup. The runners-up were Czechoslovakia, third place Germany, and fourth place Austria.
3. In the 1938 World Cup, did the hosts win the trophy?

Answer: No

The host country (France) did not win the trophy. The winners were in fact Italy, for the 2nd year running. Hungary missed out and came 2nd, and the not so mighty (at the time) Brazil came 3rd.
4. A few World Cups were cancelled due to the War II, but it resumed in 1950. Brazil hosted the championships and ended up coming runners-up. Who won the Cup?

Answer: Uruguay

Uruguay 1st, Brazil 2nd, Sweden 3rd, and Spain 4th.
5. Was there actually a World Cup Final in 1950?

Answer: No

The whole competition was played on a league basis. The four winners of the 1st round groups went into another league, with the top team making the title. It was pure coincidence that the final game was between Uruguay and Brazil, and this was the deciding game.
6. Where was the 1954 World Cup held, and who won it?

Answer: host: Switzerland, winner: West Germany

West Germany won this championship, and Hungary once again came so close, but only managed a runner-up spot. Austria came 3rd and Uruguay came 4th. Scotland qualified for the fist time, and ended up losing their only 2 games 1-0 to Austria, and 7-0 to Uruguay.
7. Who won the World Cup in 1958?

Answer: Brazil

This was the 1st time that Brazil had ever won the trophy, and were the first team to win the Cup on a different continent to their own. They played 16 games and won all but one. They drew 0-0 with England in the 1st round, but England didn't beat anybody else so they went out. This World Cup also introduced the 17 year old Pele.
8. Did Brazil win the 1962 World Cup in Chile?

Answer: Yes

England did better than normal in this World Cup, and went out 3-1 in the Quarter finals to the eventual winners.
9. Who won and hosted the 1966 World Cup?

Answer: England

It started off bad for England, in the very 1st game they had a terrible 0-0 draw against Uruguay. They won their next 2 group matches, 2-0 against Mexico and France. In the Quarters they beat Argentina 1-0, and in the semi-final they won 2-1 against Portugal.
10. The 1966 World Cup Final was a cracker. What was the final score and did somebody score a hat-trick?

Answer: 4-2, yes

England were 2-1 up with seconds to go, but then West Germany equalized to take it into extra-time. Geoff Hurst then hit the bar, but the linesman insisted when the ball bounced, it went over the line. Then in the last seconds, Hurst blasted it into the net completing his hat-trick.
