Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The New York Giants franchise began in the NFL in 1925. What was their team name?

Answer: Giants

The other names never existed in the NFL. The Giants started it all off with losing their first three games in 1925, then shutting out their opponents in the next four games. They finished 8-4 in their first season. Coached by Bob Folwell, the team was led by running back Jack McBride who led the team in scoring.
2. Which season saw the Giants win their first NFL Championship?

Answer: 1927

It took them only three seasons to put together a 11-1-1 record. The Giants allowed only three teams to score against them in the season. In 1929 and 1930, they finished second to the Packers, even though having records of 13-1-1 and 13-4, respectively.
3. Which Super Bowl found the New York Giants in it for the first time?

Answer: XXI

On January 25, 1987, the 14-2 Giants took on the 11-5 Denver Broncos. The Giants won handily, 39-20. The Giants were led by the arm of quarterback Phil Simms, the legs of running back Joe Morris, and the hands of tight end Mark Bavaro. The Giants repeated as Super Bowl Champions against the Bills in XXV, lost in XXXV to the Ravens, then put down the Patriots in Super Bowl XXLII in February 2008.
4. When head coach Tom Coughlin took over the team in 2004, he became the Giants' 17th head coach in franchise history. Which of the following helmed the Giants for 23 seasons?

Answer: Steve Owen

The other head coaches never had the helm of the Giants. Owen was the man in charge from 1931-1953. He was a former player also, and platooned both the offensive tackle and guard positions. Steve took the Giants to the playoffs 10 times, while winning two NFL Championships in 1934 and 1938.

His career record with the Giants was 151-100. Owen was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1966.
5. Who was the first Giant quarterback to throw for over 4000 yards in a season?

Answer: Phil Simms

The others never reached even 3300 yards in a season. Simms reached the milestone in 1984 by throwing for 4044 yards with 22 touchdowns. Wide receiver Bobby Johnson led the team on the other side of the pass, taking in 795 yards, Zeke Mowatt for 698, and Lionel Manuel for 619 yards.

They went only 9-7 in the season. In 2002, Kerry Collins broke Simms' franchise record when he threw for 4073 yards.
6. The 2004 NFL Draft saw Eli Manning drafted first overall. Which team drafted him?

Answer: San Diego Chargers

Eli went number one over offensive tackle Robert Gallery who went to Oakland. The Giants' first pick in the draft was in the fourth spot overall, and took quarterback Philip Rivers. Manning and Rivers 'exchanged' teams through trades. Rivers was the Giants' only first-round selection in 2004.
7. Who was the Giants' first receiver to haul in 1000 yards worth of passing in a season?

Answer: Del Shofner

The others never came close to the 1000-yard mark for the Giants. Shofner did it four times in his career, with the Giants being the recipient of three. From 1961-1963, Del had seasons of 1125, 1133, and 1181 receiving yards. These were compliments of quarterback Y.A. Tittle. In those three seasons, Shofner caught a total of 86 touchdowns and led the league twice.
8. Which of the following players never intercepted more than 30 passes in a Giants uniform?

Answer: Tucker Frederickson

Frederickson was a six-season Giant running back from 1965-1971. He had no interceptions. Tunnell was a defensive back and set a franchise record when he picked off 74 from 1948-1958. Lockhart stole 41 in his 11 seasons with the Giants, ending in 1975. Even Tom Landry, the defensive back, halfback, quarterback, and future head coach of the Dallas Cowboys was in the mix. Landry caught 31 from 1950-1955.
9. In the Giants' Super Bowl winning 2007 season, how many total shutouts did they experience, both for and against?

Answer: 0

The Giants neither provided nor suffered a shutout in the season. Their biggest blowout was a 31-10 win in Week 6 over the Falcons. Their worst loss was a 41-17 embarrassment in Week 12 against the Vikings.
10. In February 2008, fans at Phoenix Stadium watched the Giants ruin the perfect-season hopes of the New England Patriots by defeating them 17-14. Which Giants player was the first to put points on the scoreboard?

Answer: Lawrence Tynes

The others were all Patriots. Tynes' 32-yard field goal put the Giants up 3-0. Other Giants to score were David Tyree with a five-yard pass from Eli Manning, and Plaxico Burress who caught another 13-yard TD pass from Manning. Eli, the Giants' quarterback, was voted the Super Bowl MVP.
