Answer: false

He was actually being wheeled away in a body bag, the victim of severe burns all over his body. Reverend Hartley reasoned with the fireman that if Vance was already dead, Samuel couldn't "do any harm." Samuel brought Vance back to life, and Vance became a hanger-on of Samuel and Reverend Hartley.
