Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Unexpected" opens with Captain Archer having a shower, when all of a sudden a malfunction occurs. What happens?

Answer: The gravity fails

The gravity plates on E deck malfunctioning is but one of the problems that are plaguing the Enterprise as the show begins. This scene, however, provides some comic relief, as all the water from the shower is floating around in globules, and just as Archer receives word that the gravity should be restored 'any minute now', it is, causing him to unexpectedly fall with no time to prepare for it.

Scott Bakula played the part of Captain Jonathan Archer.
2. Who has a discussion about Vulcan versus human food in the mess?

Answer: T'Pol and Phlox

Dr. Phlox makes a comment about Sub-Commander T'Pol's decidedly unexciting breakfast, suggesting that she try some blueberry pancakes. He dismisses her protests, stating that the Vulcan digestive system is very versatile, and that "When in Fellebia, do as the Fellebians do."

T'Pol is not as diplomatic, saying, "It is difficult enough having to smell all this. Eating it is out of the question."

Dr. Phlox was played by John Billingsley, while Sub-Commander T'Pol was portrayed by Jolene Blalock.
3. Commander Tucker traces the source of the malfunctions on the ship to the restriction of the flow of the plasma manifold. He corrects the problem by igniting a charge in the plasma exhaust aft of the ship.

Answer: True

Once they realize that it is the restriction of plasma flow, Sub-Commander T'Pol finds an anomaly distorting the Enterprise's wake pattern. Captain Archer decides to ignite the exhaust, first ensuring that the hull plating around the nacelles has been polarized for maximum shielding.

When they review the recording of the explosion, they see that a cloaked alien ship has been hiding in their wake, tapping the plasma exhaust to recharge their engines, while simultaneously hitchhiking within the Enterprise's warp field.
4. A cloaked alien ship is found hiding in the Enterprise's plasma exhaust. To what alien race does the ship belong?

Answer: Xyrillian

As soon as they discover the ship, Captain Archer hails them and states that their presence is causing malfunctions, and could they please withdraw to a minimum distance of 10 kilometres. The alien captain replies, asking the Enterprise not to harm them, and that they are complying.

Once the Xyrillians explain themselves, Archer is more than willing to extend a helping hand.

Scalosians show up in "The Original Series" episode "Wink of an Eye", Ventaxians make an appearance in "The Next Generation" episode "The Devil's Due", and Yaderans are seen in the "Deep Space 9" episode "Shadowplay".

The Xyrillian captain was played by Randy Oglesby.
5. Commander Tucker boards the alien ship to assist with repairs to their teraphasic coils. What is the name of the female engineer that he works with?

Answer: Ah'len

Trip must go through a three-hour acclimatization before boarding the Xyrillian ship, and even afterwards he has great difficulty adjusting to their atmosphere. He takes a suggested nap and wakes up feeling much better. Ah'len helps him through his transition, feeding him water cubes and taking him to a recreational holographic simulator, similar to the holodeck seen in "Star Trek: The Next Generation".

Ah'len was played by Julianne Christie.
6. Tucker and the sensual alien engineer spend some time together in a holographic simulator, including playing a game that involves putting their hands in a bowl of white granules together. What do they do in the game?

Answer: Read each other's minds

Tucker is astonished by the realism of the holographic simulator, especially with how he can feel things and not just see them. He learns that it is done with 'resequenced photons'. Ah'len uses the simulator to show him Thera, her homeworld, and then 'move' them to a rowboat, where they play their game.

Ah'len tells Trip that his favourite food is catfish, and Trip is astounded. He then tries to sense something about Ah'len, and says that her favourite food is dutara root. Ah'len follows up by telling Trip that Captain Archer saved his life four years previously, while Tucker realizes that Ah'len finds him attractive.
7. After returning to the Enterprise, Tucker makes a visit to sickbay to ask Dr. Phlox about a growth on his wrist. It turns out to be a cancerous cyst.

Answer: False

After examining the growth, Dr. Phlox informs Commander Tucker that it is, in fact, a nipple. He then tells Trip that he is pregnant. As one would expect, Tucker is astounded. Phlox is able to explain, at least, that Xyrillian females use males simply as hosts, and that all of the genetic material in the embryo comes from the female.
8. Human males do not typically find themselves pregnant. Where does the alien embryo in Commander Tucker begin to grow?

Answer: Between his ribs

Dr. Phlox explains that the blastocyst has implanted itself between his sixth and seventh intercostals (on the left side of Tucker's chest). He also explains that the embryo is already integrated with Tucker's pericardium, and cannot be removed without endangering the lives of both Tucker and the embryo.

Tucker does not receive much support from Archer, who smirks, or T'Pol, who makes several comments about Tucker's inability to control his impulses, even though he did nothing that (to him) seemed sexual in nature.
9. What sort of changes does Commander Tucker begin experiencing, due to his pregnancy?

Answer: All of these

Trip exhibits many of the 'classic' signs of pregnancy. He becomes easily irritated (hormonal imbalance), he starts to be overly concerned with safety issues on the ship in regards to 'small people' or 'little aliens' (protective instinct), and during dinner he declares the meal to be the best he has ever tasted, and orders a full second helping from the steward (appetite cravings).
10. Needing to return the embryo to its mother, the crew of the Enterprise manage to track down the alien ship, but it is (once again) piggybacking another vessel - what kind?

Answer: A Klingon battlecruiser

While trying to hail the Klingons, the Enterprise is immediately fired upon. The Enterprise, however, doesn't rise to the bait.

Captain Archer must walk on eggshells while dealing with the aggressive Klingons. With T'Pol's help (she tells the captain that the Klingon Chancellor had called Archer 'brother' after their initial mission), they convince the Klingons to spare the Xyrillians, in exchange for the possibility of their holographic technology.

Tucker is able to have the embryo safely removed (it's a girl!), and the most uncomfortable thing for him in the whole process is spending three hours (twice!) in the decompression chamber with a group of Klingons.
