Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the opening scene of "The Impossible Box", Soji is having a dream from when she was a 'child'. Who does she see in the dream?

Answer: Her father in his lab

Considering that Soji was never actually a child, it is interesting that she would be programmed to be able to have dreams, especially one of her nonexistent childhood. When she awakens and tells Narek about her dream, he realizes that it is the key to finding out what he has been trying to learn all along - the location of her 'home planet', where the Zhat Vash believe a community of androids exists.
2. Aboard La Sirena, the crew are discussing the Borg and Picard's experiences with them. What does Picard vehemently claim about them, saying "They don't change! They ___________!"?

Answer: metastasize

Despite his seeming equanimity, the Borg remain a touchy topic for Picard. The experience of being assimilated (and restored) left an indelible mark. When Dr. Jurati asks if the Borg on the Artifact, having been severed from the Collective, are changed. Picard's angry response equated the Borg to a cancer.
3. Following the stresses of the recent events and the upcoming trials of the Borg cube, two members of the crew find comfort in each other's arms. Who?

Answer: Captain Cristóbal Rios and Dr. Agnes Jurati

Dr. Jurati finds Captain Rios alone in the transporter room in the evening getting a little exercise in (some footwork with a soccer ball), and approaches him with some trepidation. Believing her to be distraught after the death of her colleague and former companion Bruce Maddox (which she is, although not for the exact reasons he thinks), he offers comforting words and embraces her.

This emboldens Agnes to be overtly suggestive, to the point where she declares her tendency to sense mistakes while she is making them, and they retreat to his quarters.
4. In order to gain access to The Artifact, Raffi manages to get official Federation diplomatic credentials for Picard to meet with the executive director of the Borg Reclamation Project. Who is it?

Answer: Hugh (former Borg)

Raffi calls up her friend at Starfleet Command, Captain Emily Bosch, and calls in a favour to get Picard official diplomatic status. At first 'Emmy' is dead set against it, but with La Sirena only three hours away from the Artifact, showing up without the proper credentials would be considered an act of war. Reluctantly, Captain Bosch agrees to a 24-hour window for the permission, but it costs Raffi dearly when Bosch tells her never to contact her again.
5. Also known as a 'tan zhekran', the Romulan 'impossible box' of the episode title is used by Narek for what general purpose?

Answer: To help him think

The tan zhekran is a Romulan puzzle box that requires much patience to solve, needing to move exterior panels gently into proper positions while also listening for interior mechanisms to properly align. Narek uses it as a concentration tool, despite his sister's disparagement of the box as a 'toy'.
6. In an attempt to force Soji past her programming to realize that she is not who (or what) she thinks she is, he reveals to her that every evening her calls to her 'mother' last exactly how long, without variation?

Answer: 70 seconds

While discussing the dream with Narek, Soji mentions that she tried to tell her mother about it, but fell asleep in the process. This provides an opportunity for Narek to share the revelation that this happens EVERY time she communicates with (the computer simulation she thinks is) her mother. He even shows her the computer records of every instance that this has happened.

With this revelation, Soji begins her first steps to (safely, for Narek's purposes) discovering her true nature.
7. Soji becomes even more confused about her reality when she analyzes all of her personal effects and discovers that nothing (even 'childhood' photos) is more than 37 months old.

Answer: True

After her conversation with Narek about the time-limited calls to her mother, Soji tries to make another call, and (of course) falls unconscious once again. This time, when she awakens, she begins to analyze all of her personal effects with a scanner, and everything she has has a 'probable age' of just 37 months.

This drives her back to Narek for help, and he now has Zhat Vash are looking for.
8. Narek takes Soji to a Romulan meditation chamber deep within the Artifact, where he helps her 'relive' her dream until he can identify her planet of origin. What does Soji see in the sky in her dream?

Answer: Two red moons, surrounded by lightning

Narek leads Soji through a special Romulan meditation called the Zhal Makh, which involves the steps of yut makh (closing the eyes), lu shiar (lifting the eyes), qlam wath (unfolding) in order to reach Vri Glam (the center). With his help, Soji is able to see past the vague images of her dream to eventually describe a defining feature through her father's laboratory skylight - two red moons surrounded by lighting.

With enough information to be able to find Soji's home planet and the community of synths created by Bruce Maddox, Narek takes the final step in his plan, releasing a deadly toxin from within his tan zhekran (impossible box) with the intent to eliminate Soji.
9. Picard enlists the aid of the executive director of the Borg Reclamation Project to find Soji aboard the Artifact. At first the sensors can't find her, but when she leaves the Romulan meditation chamber, Picard finds her and convinces her he can help. To escape, they beam to La Sirena.

Answer: False

When Narek tries to kill Soji, she smashes through the floor of the meditation chamber, finally 'activated' as an android. Picard and Hugh find her quickly and he shows her the pendant that Dahj wore (the same pendant Soji has).

Through their imbedded knowledge as former Borgs, Hugh and Picard innately know of the existence of the 'queencell' hidden within the cube, which was an emergency long-distance teleportation chamber that would allow the Borg Queen (if she happened to be on the ship) to escape in an emergency. With the ability to transport (theoretically) up to 40,000 light years away, Picard has Hugh send them to Nepenthe, the home planet of a certain former serving officer from the Enterprise.
10. Which member of the crew surreptitiously followed Picard to the Artifact?

Answer: Elnor

Sworn to Picard's (lost) cause, as soon as it becomes evident that Picard is in danger, Elnor beams from La Sirena and arrives at the queencell in time to dispatch a couple of Romulans chasing them. Elnor then chooses to stay behind and 'hold them back' long enough for Hugh to operate the transporter and allow Picard and Soji to escape.

Before departing, Picard contacts Raffi and tells her (and Rios) to find them on Nepenthe.
