Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Long range scanners pick up an inhabited Minshara class planet with a population of around 500 million. By monitoring the various languages, Ensign Sato manages to learn the name of the species. What do they call themselves?

Answer: Akaali

Captain Archer's senior staff plays a bit of a trick on him in the opening scene of the episode. Coming into the Situation Room, Archer receives a report of what there is of interest within sensor range. First, Sub-Commander T'Pol mentions a supernova remnant, then a cluster of three neutron stars. Commander Tucker can't help but crack a smile as he mentions the third option - a Minshara (Class M) planet.

The Akaali look very much like humans, with the exception of a pair of small ridges extending vertically up above the outer edges of their eyes. They have a pre-industrial culture, similar to Earth of the 16th or 17th centuries.

Captain Jonathan Archer was played by Scott Bakula, Sub-Commander T'Pol by Jolene Blalock, Commander Charles 'Trip' Tucker III by Connor Trinneer, and Ensign Hoshi Sato by Linda Park.
2. To try to limit the potential for cultural contamination, Captain Archer decides to send only one crew member to the surface. Who does he choose?

Answer: Ensign Hoshi Sato

With her skill with languages, Ensign Sato is the logical choice for Archer, and he explains to her (to ease her mind about going) that she would be the best one to manage if something happened to the universal translator.

To prepare Sato for her away mission, Dr. Phlox applies prosthetic ridges to her forehead as a disguise, in addition to appropriate clothing.

Dr. Phlox was played by John Billingsley.
3. Before they can settle on a location to land the shuttle, T'Pol reports on anachronistic sensor readings from the planet's surface. What did the sensors detect that should not be in a pre-industrial society?

Answer: Neutrino transmissions

T'Pol pinpoints the neutrino transmissions as coming from a city on the eastern continent, and surmises that the transmissions are likely coming from an antimatter reactor. As this is impossible in a society that doesn't, as Trip puts it, "even have indoor plumbing," it changes their mission plans.

The away team that goes to investigate becomes a group of four, with Archer, T'Pol and Tucker joining Sato.
4. On the planet's surface, Archer and Tucker trace the unusual readings to a location within the city. What kind of business do they find there?

Answer: A curio shop

As it is the middle of the night when they find the curio shop, Trip and the captain decide to break in, rather than try to investigate during the daytime with lots of people around. Trip barely manages to pick the lock before a night watchman comes by, but even so, their activities do not go unnoticed, and someone follows them into the shop.
5. Archer and Tucker enter the building and discover a doorway protected by an energy shield. While planning their next move they are confronted by a woman with a crossbow and a lot of questions. T'Pol arrives and stuns her from behind. Her ID reveals her name to be Riann, and her occupation to be... what?

Answer: An apothecary

While Trip and the captain were finding the source of the neutrino transmissions, Sato and T'Pol found people with a visible illness; mottled skin and lesions. Riann the apothecary, also suspicious of the shop and believing there to be a connection between it and the sickness, confronts the two men, thinking they are in collusion with the shop owner, picking up mysterious deliveries.

With dawn approaching, T'Pol, Tucker and Sato return to the shuttle, while Archer brings Riann back to her apothecary shop and waits with her until she recovers from T'Pol's stun blast.

Riann was played by Diane DiLascio.
6. In the morning, Trip and Archer revisit the building and meet the owner, a man named Garos. A surreptitious scan reveals that he is not human, and when confronted, Garos tells them that he is a member of what race?

Answer: Malurian

Upon entering the curio shop, Archer tells the shopkeeper (who is named Garos) that Trip is an amateur enthusiast, and Garos shows him a mask. Archer uses the distraction to scan Garos, but Trip pretty much gives away the fact that they are not from the area when he doesn't recognize that the mask is supposed to represent Draylen, the god of the Akaali afterworld.

The moment that Captain Archer tells Garos that they know he is not Akaali, Garos also pulls out a scanner to determine that Archer and Tucker are also not what they appear to be. He tells them that his people came on a survey mission, and he liked the civilization so much, he decided to stay.

When asked about the antimatter reactor, Garos explains that it is merely for powering a fabrication device for food and clothing.

Garos was played by Wade Anthony Williams.
7. Many people in the city are suffering from a mysterious illness, and both Riann and the Enterprise personnel believe that it is linked to Garos. When Dr. Phlox analyzes a water sample from the city, what does he find contaminating it?

Answer: Tetracyanate 622

Dr. Phlox identifies the tetracyanate 622 as a synthetic compound, commonly used as an industrial lubricant. This discovery increases the likelihood that Garos is behind this, given the lack of technology on the planet.
8. Riann and Captain Archer hold a stakeout of the building, and follow one of Garos' men when he comes to pick up a delivery of crates. Out in the woods, the man leaves the crates in a stack. What happens to them?

Answer: A shuttle descends and picks them up by tractor beam.

During their stakeout, Archer's translator begins to malfunction, and he quickly leans in and kisses Riann while fiddling with the translator behind her back. He is 'forced' to kiss her a second time when the first attempt doesn't quite fix the problem. He tries to cover by saying that someone had been coming their way.

After the crates get picked up by the shuttle, the delivery man attacks them, and Archer manages to overpower him. In the process, the man is revealed as much more alien than the Humans, with a fake skin mask over reptilian-like scaly skin. They take his device, the same thing that Garos had in the shop, and are able to use it to gain entrance to the shielded door in Garos' shop.
9. Captain Archer and Riann gain access to the building's basement and discover a huge underground mining operation that a dampening field had hidden from the Enterprise sensors. What is it that Garos and his people have been mining?

Answer: A veridium isotope

T'Pol tells Captain Archer that the veridium isotope being mined is a very controlled substance that is used in the manufacture of explosives, a revelation that is not too surprising to them, given the manner in which Garos has been running his secret operation.

The tetracyanate 622 that is making people sick is a byproduct of the Malurian mining operation, and Captain Archer works quickly to try and disable the dampening field protecting the operation before they are discovered.

Garos does discover them, but Archer is able to accomplish his mission and escape into the city. Garos and his men follow and attack, but with Riann's help, they are defeated.
10. In orbit, Garos' starship comes from hiding on the opposite side of the planet and attacks the Enterprise. Despite having energy shielding, they are disabled by a lucky shot in a torpedo barrage from the Enterprise.

Answer: False

Once Archer manages to disable the magnetic shielding around the mining operation and the antimatter reactor, the Enterprise is able to beam up the reactor and re-beam it off the bow of the Malurian ship. A well-placed torpedo then detonates the reactor, causing the Malurian shields to fail. After that, it was easy to disable the Malurian ship's weapons, and win the day.

With the end of the Malurian mining operation, there will be no further contamination of the city's water supply, and Dr. Phlox provides a medicine to help those who had been afflicted.
