According to Oliver's voice over during the intro to the episode, Lian Yu is the Mandarin word for Purgatory. In that same voice over, he says he has been stranded on that island for 5 years.

Oliver's family is shocked when they hear this. Walter Steele, Robert Queen's friend from the company and now Oliver's step-father, comments that he did not know Oliver took Russian in college, to which Oliver rudely replies that he did not know Walter wanted to sleep with his mother.
