Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Judy Borden: Straight-A student; School newspaper editor; Sweathog Barbarino's tutor

Answer: Welcome Back, Kotter

Judy Borden (played by Helaine Lembeck) is a recurring character in "Welcome Back, Kotter" from 1975-1978. Judy was the editor of the James Buchanan High newspaper, the 'Buchanan Bugle'. Her status as an honor student is affirmed by the fact that she tutored John Travolta's character, Vinnie Barbarino. Judy Borden managed splendidly with the remedial students who called themselves 'Sweathogs', and she and Vinnie Barbarino, the de facto leader of the group, dated for a time.
2. Willow Rosenberg: Member of math, science, and computer clubs in school; Assisted friends in their extracurricular endeavors with computer and hacking skills

Answer: Buffy the Vampire Slayer

The 'extracurricular endeavors' mentioned in the question refer to Willow's researching demons and supernatural forces for the 'Scooby Gang' on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1997-2003). Alyson Hannigan plays the role of Willow Rosenberg for all seven seasons of the show. Willow becomes an adept/powerful Wiccan in the series - her impressiveness and range of talents is basically limitless.
3. Jane Lane: Best friend of titular character; Aspiring artist who rather dislikes materialism and societal expectations

Answer: Daria

In the animated series "Daria" (1997-2002), a spin-off of creator Mike Judge's "Beavis and Butt-Head", Jane Lane is typically seen with short, black hair, a red coat, and black boots. She and Daria are each best-in-class in their own way(s). They're both smart and cynical. Jane joined the high school's track team at one point, and is slightly more outgoing than her best friend.
4. Rachel Berry: Driven and focused student throughout high school in Ohio; Pursues her dreams in New York after graduation

Answer: Glee

Particularly towards the beginning of the series, Rachel Berry was often center stage in "Glee" (2009-2015). Lea Michele portrays Rachel Berry, a noteworthy addition to this 'Best in Class' cast of characters in that her class mostly involved singing and performing on stage. Rachel Berry was ambitious from the start of the series, and was the first captain of the McKinley High School Glee Club. Having gone to school in New York and acted on Broadway, Rachel's dreams were more than adequately fulfilled by the series finale.
5. Paul Pfeiffer: Bright, successful student who suffers from many allergies; Eventually attends Harvard and becomes a lawyer

Answer: The Wonder Years

Josh Saviano is the actor who portrayed Paul Pfeiffer in "The Wonder Years" (1988-1993). Saviano became a lawyer after a brief acting career, as did his character Paul in the show. Paul Pfeiffer's success at Harvard and becoming a lawyer is revealed at the end of the series.
6. Julian Bashir: Initially had learning difficulties; Graduated second in his class in medical school; Offered any choice of job after his medical school success

Answer: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Dr. Julian Bashir was played by Alexander Siddig in all seven seasons of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" (1993-1999). Through genetic engineering, Julian's mental capacities advanced rapidly. He was good enough to pursue a career as a professional tennis player, but stuck with becoming a doctor and fulfilling his true desire of helping people instead. One episode of "DS9" revealed that Julian Bashir graduated first in his class in pediatric medicine.
7. Samuel Powers: Superb academic skills, but possibly lacking in social skills; Interested in insects and computers; Often pursues his classmate Lisa Turtle romantically

Answer: Saved by the Bell

Samuel Powers might be more recognizable by his nickname: Screech. Dustin Diamond played Samuel 'Screech' Powers in "Saved by the Bell" (1989-1992). He was in several other spin-offs of the series, a veritable fixture for the show as the smart kid. He does Zack Morris's homework in exchange for protection from school bullies - the stereotypical and unfortunate side effect ever so common in our collection of people who are 'Best in Class'.
8. Paris Geller: Perpetual overachiever involved in heaps of activities at Chilton; Attends Yale with Rory; Speaks Portuguese fluently

Answer: Gilmore Girls

Liza Weil portrays the driven Paris Geller in "Gilmore Girls" (2000-2007). She is originally at odds with Rory Gilmore when Rory arrives at Chilton Preparatory Academy, since Paris wishes above all else to protect her standing at the top of the class at the prestigious institution. Paris Geller dreamt of going to Harvard after graduating from Chilton, but buckled under the pressure of the admissions process and had to settle (if attending the school can be called settling) for going to Yale University with Rory. Paris does eventually attend Harvard Medical School, and maintains a close friendship with Rory throughout the series. Paris and Rory are both rather equally 'Best in Class' material, and they likely brought out the best in each other with their rivalry and academic dedication over the years.
9. Martin Prince: Teacher's pet always dressed in orange shorts; Frequent target of Nelson's bullying; Once achieved a 216 on an IQ test

Answer: The Simpsons

Martin Prince is in Bart Simpson's 4th grade class in "The Simpsons" (1989- ). The 216 IQ score was achieved in the second ever episode, "Bart the Genius", where Bart replaced Martin's name with his own on an IQ test and got to attend a gifted school in Martin's place because of it. Though he is two years older, Martin typically rivals Lisa Simpson as the 'Best in Class' at Springfield Elementary School.
10. Niles Crane: Attended Yale University and the University of Cambridge; Enjoys classical music and fine wine; Practiced psychiatry in Seattle

Answer: Frasier

One episode of "Frasier" (1993-2004) reveals Niles Crane (portrayed by David Hyde Pierce) to have an IQ of 156. Niles exhibits many stereotypical traits that accompany his academic prowess - such as having several allergies and an appalling lack of skill in mostly any athletic endeavor.

He and his brother Frasier are both psychiatrists in Seattle. David Hyde Pierce himself graduated from Yale University in 1981.
