Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This freckled Gryffindor student was positively giddy when he used "Accio Brain!" to summon a brain from a tank of brains in the Department of Mysteries.

Answer: Ronald Weasley

When Ron used Accio to call the brain from the mysterious brain tank, everybody was so taken aback that they all ceased their deadly dueling to witness the results of the summoning. Harry and his allies, along with the Death Eaters, halted their battle in the Ministry of Magic to watch the brain spring out of the tank "like a leaping fish" ("Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix", 2003). I'm sure Ron was right that the brains felt "weird" to touch.

The Brain Room that housed this intriguing tank of brains is located on the ninth level of the Ministry of Magic.
2. Often seen in his canine Animagus form, this wizard used the Accio Summoning Charm to retrieve bottles of Butterbeer at his family home at 12 Grimmauld Place.

Answer: Sirius Black

Sirius was known for being talented working with charms from a young age. He used charms to enhance his motorcycle's capabilities. On this 'Casting Call' occasion, Sirius Black was successful in using the Summoning Charm to supply everyone with bottles of Butterbeer in "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix".

The convenience provided by the ability to cast simple spells certainly comforted Sirius in his restless state, remaining cooped up out of sight.
3. This dutiful mother used Accio to summon various sweets her mischievous sons were trying to sneak out of the house for the Quidditch World Cup.

Answer: Molly Weasley

In "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", Molly Weasley used the Summoning Charm to confiscate the twins' candy. Ever the devoted mother, Molly was proficient in the use of charms that made her household tasks easier, such as food-related charms and/or cooking enhancements. And she was certainly experienced in keeping Fred and George in line. If anything, the multitasking required to maintain her household and monitor the twins allowed her to hone her skills as an impressive wielder of magic.
4. While administering the Theory of Defence Against the Dark Arts O.W.L. in 1976, this Part-Goblin Charms Master was knocked over when he used Accio to collect exam parchments.

Answer: Filius Flitwick

Flitwick taught charms to Harry's parents in 1971, and continued teaching throughout Harry's years at Hogwarts more than twenty years later. It is in "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix", in a chapter recounting a memory of Snape's, that this particular casting of Accio is mentioned.

The parchments obliged the successful Accio spell, flinging Flitwick onto the floor when he tried to catch them in his outstretched arms. An impressive cascade of flying parchments was too much for a man of his stature.
5. This older twin, who gave himself the codename Rapier for Potterwatch, used Accio to summon hairs from a boy to help Harry disguise himself.

Answer: Fred Weasley

Fred helped Harry disguise himself using Polyjuice Potion so that Harry could conceal his identity and attend Bill and Fleur's wedding in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows". Fred cast Accio to summon hair from a Muggle boy in the small village of Ottery St Catchpole, enabling Harry to show up completely incognito.

It is not always solely for pranks and entertainment that the twins use magic. This is a perfect example of Gryffindor bravery coming to the rescue, helping Harry and Fred's own family have the wedding they deserve.
6. This twin with a "hole-y" ear cast Accio to call upon a broom from Umbridge's office to escape from Hogwarts.

Answer: George Weasley

In "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix", when Fred and George leave school to begin their successful Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes business in Diagon Alley, George Weasley summons a broomstick to flee the school. Fred and George had been involved in many pranks leading up to their departure, including setting off Whiz-bangs and placing a Portable Swamp in the hallway close to Umbridge's office. Fred expresses the situation perfectly immediately before this broom summoning: "I think we've outgrown full-time education ... Time to test our talents in the real world, d'you reckon?"

George, of course, is the twin who later suffered an injury to his ear that led to his ill-received "hole-y" joke.
7. This man, while Head of Slytherin House, used Accio nonverbally to summon essays from the students in his Defense Against the Dark Arts class.

Answer: Severus Snape

Severus Snape is an adept wizard in virtually every type of magic. In "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince", he casts the Summoning Charm nonverbally to collect his students' essays on countering Dementors. He is completely casual in this action, showing he can manage a nonverbal spell without any conscious attention, while continuing his lecture.

In the course of the series, Snape showed exceptional skill in potions, the Dark Arts, Occlumency and Legilimency, charms, and Transfiguration. In the sixth book, it is revealed that Snape created many spells himself, including Sectumsempra.
8. Husband of Andromeda and father of Nymphadora, this savvy charm-worker used Accio to summon salmon out of water to eat while he was living as an outlaw.

Answer: Ted Tonks

Ted was swift and triumphant in summoning salmon with the Accio spell in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows". Ted Tonks was also skillful in magical healing, as he was able to repair Harry's broken tooth after several Order of the Phoenix members were ambushed by Death Eaters in the same book. Ted Tonks went on the run when Voldemort took over the Ministry of Magic. Ted and Andromeda generously offered their home to the members of the Order of the Phoenix as a safe-house.
9. He used Accio to summon his broom in the First Task of the Triwizard Tournament, and again to summon the Triwizard Cup to escape Lord Voldemort.

Answer: Harry Potter

Both instances of Harry casting Accio during the Triwizard Tournament in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" showed remarkable bravery, and the latter was a great example of quick thinking on the part of our beloved hero. And these are just two of many times Harry Potter is successful in summoning objects throughout the series.

He practices with the spell in the Gryffindor Common Room before the Third Task in the tournament with several objects around the room. Harry uses Accio in the fifth book to summon a toad in Charms class, in the sixth book to summon brooms for himself and Dumbledore, and in the seventh book to summon both his glasses and a bottle of dittany.
10. This clever Gryffindor student used Accio during the Battle of the Department of Mysteries to retrieve Harry's wand for him.

Answer: Hermione Granger

Hermione, quick and astute as ever, summoned Harry's wand and threw it to him in this critical moment in "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix". Hermione is also successful in using the Summoning Charm to obtain a book about Horcruxes (in "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince").

Hermione's quick thinking, encyclopedic knowledge of spells, and intrepid spirit in assisting Harry were often the reason the trio of Harry, Ron, and Hermione survived and succeeded against Voldemort and his minions.
