His lawyer refuses, but later, as Mike expects, Jimmy intentionally spills coffee on the detective allowing Mike the opportunity to get close and pickpocket the notebook.

While still in the bar, Mike tells his dead son's sergeant and partner, "I know it was you". After putting Mike in the car, the sergeant frisks him and removes a pistol. He and the other policeman lean Mike up against a wall in a deserted alley and plan how best to kill him. Mike has another weapon and is not as drunk as he acts and shoots and kills both policemen he holds responsible for his son's murder.

In a powerful scene, Mike and his daughter-in-law Stacey discuss the events leading up to Matt's death. Stacey tells Mike about hearing her husband in a desperate-sounding telephone call at 2AM. She presumes that it was with Mike who admits having the conversation and explains that Matt did not want to become a dirty cop. Mike advises him that everyone, including his father, was on the take.

This information devastates Matt's image of his father, who also advises him to take the money. Matt complies, but is still murdered.
