Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the flash forward at the beginning of the "Better Call Saul" episode "Smoke", Gene Takavic was being treated at a hospital, after having collapsed at the Cinnabon where he worked. What item did the hospital clerk request from him that was the same item that Ed, the vacuum cleaner repairman, had created for Saul in the "Granite State" episode of the final season of "Breaking Bad"?

Answer: Nebraska driver's license

Season four of "Better Call Saul" opened with a flash forward to Jimmy's post-Saul life as Cinnabon manager Gene Takavic. In the previous season, we had seen Takavic collapse at work, and now he was at a hospital. As he was leaving, the hospital clerk asked to see his driver's license again because "the computer keeps kicking this back". Takavic was understandably nervous while he waited for her to process the license. Eventually she realized that she had entered the letter "o" instead of a zero, and as he was leaving, she called him back again, but this time, only to return his license to him.

In episode 5.15 of "Breaking Bad", we saw the license on the computer screen as Ed (Robert Forster), the vacuum cleaner repairman created it. That Nebraska license showed Saul with his long comb-over, wearing a purple shirt.

But the brief view we had of Gene's license showed a picture that looked more like Gene, with glasses and a mustache. Even though the licenses were different, Executive producers Melissa Bernstein and Vince Gilligan both claimed that the license was an Easter egg. Gilligan pointed out that the prop master Mark Hanson worked on both shows so the license was intended to be "a fun bit of continuity".
2. In both the "Breathe" episode of "Better Call Saul" and the "Say My Name" episode of "Breaking Bad", Mike was with Kaylee when he received an important phone call. In "Breathe", the call was from Lydia, who wanted to talk with him about his visit to a Madrigal warehouse. In "Say My Name", it was a frantic call from Walter White warning Mike that the police were on their way to pick him up. Where were Mike and Kaylee in both these scenes?

Answer: The park

According to executive producer/writer Thomas Schnauz, the Easter egg was the way the "Breathe" scene was shot in particular. We first see a shot of the blue sky and then "we see a pair of legs swinging through frame, which harkens to episode 5.07 of "Breaking Bad". Both scenes featured the same intro.

In the "Breathe" episode, the phone call was merely an inconvenience for Mike and for Kaylee, whom Mike told that it was "time to go". But in "Say My Name", Mike didn't have time to speak to Kaylee - he had to quickly leave without her.
3. In the "Something Beautiful" episode of "Better Call Saul", Jimmy had sent the thief Ira to steal a Hummel figurine from Neff Copiers, but unfortunately, the owner of Neff Copiers was spending the night in his office. What food delivery did the man order, which was the same one that Walter White tossed onto the roof of his house in the "Caballo Sin Nombre" episode of "Breaking Bad"?

Answer: Venezia's pizza

In the "Breaking Bad" episode, Walt had been kicked out of his house but was trying to get his family back together. He showed up for dinner, bringing a large Venezia's pizza with dipping sticks, but his wife closed the door on him, and he angrily tossed the pizza, which flew out of the box and landed intact on the roof.

In a later episode ("Thirty-Eight Snub"), Badger (Matthew Lee Jones) ordered Venezia's pizza for a party at Jesse's place, and Jesse asked why the pizza wasn't cut. According to Badger, "That's the gimmick.

They don't cut their pizza and they pass the savings on to you". Jesse questioned how much it could possibly cost to cut a pizza. In the "Better Call Saul" episode, the owner of Neff Copiers ordered the pizza when he was spending the night at his office.

When he ordered it, he asked for it sliced and added "could you also throw in some dipping sticks?" Incidentally, Ira (Franc Ross) would later be the owner of Vamonos Pest Service, the company Walt and Jesse used as a cover for their meth operation.

When Saul showed Mike, Walt, and Jesse the pest company operation in the "Hazard Pay" episode of season five, Mike asked how Saul knew them, to which Saul replied, "Well I've been pulling their chestnuts out of the fire, legally speaking, for five years".
4. In the "Talk" episode of "Better Call Saul", Mike met Anita (Tamara Tunie) for lunch at the café, and she was wearing a name tag that indicated where she worked. What location was it, which was the same place that Mike's attorney, Dan Wachsberger (Chris Freihofer), used to deliver payoffs to Mike's "nine guys" in the "Say My Name" episode of "Breaking Bad"?

Answer: Bank

It was difficult to read, but her name tag said "Cradock Marine Bank", the same bank where Wachsberger would deliver treats to the clerk before going into the safety deposit box vault to make "hazard" payments for Mike's guys and for Kaylee Ehrmantraut.

It was also there that a smiling Gomez and his DEA crew picked up Wachsberger. And for "X-Files" fans, it was also the name of a bank in a couple episodes written by Vince Gilligan. The exterior shots of the bank in Albuquerque were actually the former Charter Bank located at 2130 Eubank Blvd.
5. When Anita arrived for lunch with Mike at the cafe in the "Talk" episode of "Better Call Saul", Mike was doing a crossword puzzle, and Anita helped him with one of the clues. What was the answer to "bellringer's love interest" that was also the name that Marie wanted Skyler to give her baby in the baby shower scene of "Breaking Bad" episode 1.07?

Answer: Esmeralda

Mike was doing a crossword when Anita arrived to meet him for lunch, and she looked down at the puzzle and said, "Twenty-two across is 'Esmeralda'". The clue had been "bellringer's love interest", and Anita explained that it was "The Hunchback". Mike then said "Quasimodo!" In the "A No-Rough-Stuff-Type Deal" episode of "Breaking Bad", Walt Jr. was filming Skyler's baby shower, and he had the camera on Marie.

She said "Welcome to your baby shower, Esmeralda!" But when he turned the camera on Skyler, Skyler said, "Believe it or not, Esmeralda, right after the party, your name was changed to Holly. And I believe, Hank, that that was around the time that we took Aunt Marie to the insane asylum".
6. In the flash forward scene at the beginning of "Quite a Ride", we saw Saul Goodman frantically packing his things while Francesca shredded documents in his office. Saul took an item out of his desk and used it to slash the Constitution wall paper to retrieve a shoebox. What item did he use, that was the same item Gus used to slit Victor's throat in episode 4.01 of "Breaking Bad"?

Answer: Box cutter

The flash forward scene occurred during the "Breaking Bad" timeline but wasn't in the original show; the scene was filmed for "Better Call Saul". While Saul was quickly packing to leave town, he asked Francesca, "Hey, where's the uh..." She curtly told him, "Use your words!" But then he pulled the box cutter out of his desk with an "A ha!" and proceeded to slash the wall paper to retrieve a shoe box.

The box appeared to be the same one that Gene had hidden in his closet in the flash forward in the first season of "Better Call Saul".

The 4.01 episode of "Breaking Bad" was actually called "Box Cutter". In it, Gus had picked up a box cutter from a shelf, apparently to use it on Walt or Jesse, but instead, he slit Victor's throat with it.
7. In the "Something Stupid" episode of "Better Call Saul", the Johns Hopkins doctor that Gus had hired for Hector visited Gus's home to provide a status update. What was Gus preparing at the time that he later made with Walter White when White visited his home in the season three episode "Abiquiu" of "Breaking Bad"?

Answer: Chilean fish stew

Gus had brought in Dr. Bruckner (Pooma Jagannathan) from Johns Hopkins to help with Hector's recovery, and she was meeting with Gus to give him an update on Hector's condition. While they were talking, Gus was preparing Paila Marina, a Chilean fish stew.

In the "Abiquiu" episode of season three, Gus explained the origin of the dish while he had Walter White help prepare it when White dined at his home. Then in the season four episode "Bug", Gus prepared the same stew for Jesse, according to executive producer Melissa Bernstein.
8. In the "Coushatta" episode of "Better Call Saul", Jimmy set up a fundraiser for Huell Babineaux, and in the "Phoenix" episode of season two of "Breaking Bad", Walt Jr. created the same type of fundraiser for his father. What type of charity drive was it?

Answer: Donation website

In "Coushatta", Jimmy set up a website Freewill-baptistchurch.com as part of the scheme to get Huell's sentence reduced, and on the website, there was a donate button to help with the costs of Huell's defense. On "Breaking Bad", Walt Jr. set up the SaveWalterWhite.com website to raise money for his dad's cancer treatment. Both websites were real websites, and if you clicked the "donate" button, you were transferred to a charity - a cancer charity for SaveWalterWhite.com and Louisiana food bank for Freewill-baptistchurch.com.

When discussing the reuse of a donation website, supervising producer/writer Gordon Smith's logic was that the website "worked once. Maybe I can use that again".
9. This one might be a bit difficult if you've only seen "Breaking Bad" because it involves a character who never appeared on the show but was mentioned in the "Better Call Saul" episode of that series. In that episode, when Saul was kidnapped by Walt and Jesse, he was relieved to find out that this person hadn't sent them. In the "Coushatta" episode of "Better Call Saul", who was this psychopath who showed up to check on the Salamanca operations?

Answer: Lalo

In "Coushatta", when Nacho arrived at the restaurant, he found a stranger (Tony Dalton) cooking in the kitchen. The man introduced himself as Eduardo but said that he went by the name of Lalo. Lalo told Nacho, "I'm just here to lend a helping hand - make sure the business is running in order".

He seemed rather charming at first, but we soon saw his dark side. On "Breaking Bad", he was mentioned during episode 2.08 which was Saul's introduction on the show. When Walt and Jesse kidnapped Saul and had him tied up on his knees in the desert, Saul frantically yelled out in Spanish that he was always a friend.

But then when Walt told him to shut up and Jesse said "Speak English", Saul calmed down: "Lalo didn't send you? No Lalo?" When Jesse asked, "Who?", Saul was relieved, "Oh thank God".

As co-creator Vince Gilligan pointed out, Saul's attitude was "Fine. Two guys with guns I don't know - guns and ski masks, whatever - do your worst. Just so long as you're not Lalo". It turned out that Gilligan wasn't convinced that including Lalo in "Better Call Saul" was a good idea at first: "I was thinking, eh, I don't know. Is it really going to pay dividends?" but co-creator Peter Gould and other of the writers pushed for it, and Gilligan eventually admitted "this was a good idea".
10. Towards the end of "Winner", the final "Better Call Saul" episode of the season, Gus and Mike were with Gale Boetticher in the unfinished underground facility. What was Gale holding that would later be found next to his body and provide a key piece of evidence against Walter White in the "Bullet Points" episode of season four of "Breaking Bad"?

Answer: "Lab Notes" notebook

Gale Boetticher (David Costabile) had been introduced during the fourth season of "Better Call Saul" when he was tasked by Gus with finding a good source of meth. At the end of the season, he was in the unfinished underground facility with Gus, and he was holding his distinctive "Lab Notes" notebook. Gale was filled with enthusiasm: "I can work with this. I mean, it's not exactly what we talked about, but it has possibilities even unfinished. Ventilation at this point is the main hurdle.

But with a series of fans and the right equipment, I am certain that I could do a rudimentary cook at the very least". Gus replied, "Not until it is ready". Gale backed down: "Of course. We only want to do it if it's done right." He then became a bit unnerved by Gus's stare and went upstairs.

He passed by Mike on his way out; Mike also walked away from Gus's stare, leaving Gus in his hole in the ground. The "Lab Notes" notebook was seen several times in "Breaking Bad". It contained numerous chemical schematics and formulas and various other ramblings including a Walt Whitman poem and a dedication "To W.W. My Star, My Perfect Silence".

It was that annotation that first made Hank look at Walter White, to which Walt joked, "You got me" before explaining that the W.W. referred to the poet. But later that inscription led to Walt's undoing.
