Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Brent volunteers to babysit Wanda's 6 year old son in an effort to impress Lacey. What is the child's name?

Answer: Tanner

We never actually see Tanner, just occasional camera shots from his perspective and projectile toys from off-camera. It adds to the sense of danger and menace...
2. Why does Wanda need a babysitter?

Answer: Dentist appointment

Wanda refuses to see the local "sadistic" dentist ("His first name is Lance!") so she and Brent look for one in the phone book. Brent selects a dentist with a good, "solid" name that could sound like someone you'd want to help you work on your house ("Want to go for a beer later, Sammy?") but Wanda will have to go in to Sasaktoon for the appointment.
3. Later in the bar the townspeople learn that Brent will be babysitting for Wanda's son. What is their response?

Answer: Taking bets on Brent's potential injuries

Bets are placed on such lovely outcomes as concussion, general ankle injury, and stitches. In another funny exchange during this scene, Lacey orders a glass of wine ("Not that bag, that's the ketchup. The other bag."). Wonder if it was good vintage?
4. At the cafe, Brent is pleased to discover that Lacey has put hot dogs back on the menu, and bites into it with obvious enjoyment. Lacey informs him it is a tofu dog, but he is not so easily fooled. What does he identify as the actual type of wiener in the hot dog?

Answer: Maple Leaf Top Dog

Lacey admits "They were on special."
5. While Brent is babysitting, the child keeps throwing things at him, and when Lacey stops by to see how they're doing the adults are forced to take refuge under a table. What is the child throwing?

Answer: Toy cars

"Why do they make these things out of metal?" Lacey asks whether Brent tried asking Tanner to stop throwing cars, and Brent replied, "Yes. He threw a truck."
6. Hank is eventually overcome with concern for Brent's safety, and leaves the bar to go and help him. He reuturns a few seconds later. Why?

Answer: Locked his keys in the truck

He struggles in vain to unlock the door using a wire coat hanger, and when Davis the police officer drives up he asks for his advice. "First thing you shoukd know is your passenger side window is open." Hank opens the passenger door, climbs in and reaches across to unlock the driver side door, then gets out of the truck, walks around to the other side to get in. I guess just sliding over didn't occur to him...
7. While Brent is babysitting, his father Oscar is left in charge of the gas station. Oscar insists everything will be fine, and Brent mentioned something that happened 7 times during the last 35 years when Oscar worked there. What happened 7 times?

Answer: Fires

The ever-crotchety Oscar insists "That wasn't my fault!" Later, while he is alone in the station, he begins playing with a lighter and drops it, starting another small fire (which luckily he was able to put out quickly). Again he says "That wasn't my fault!"
8. What is the title of the library book about child psychology that Brent borrows from the library?

Answer: Groovy Parents, Cool Kids

By Dr Spearmint Fir, who gives hippie-era advice on things like respecting the child's "headspace"... The librarian insists that Brent whisper, even though they are the only two people in the library. When he whispers that he is looking for a book on child psychology, she is puzzled and asks "Chives all over me?"
9. Brent ends up phoning his mother Emma for help babysitting. She arrives to find Brent and Lacey hiding under a table, barricaded with pillows. Emma quickly gets the child's cooperation and sends him off to bed. According to Emma, what are her two tricks for dealing with children?

Answer: Use their full name, and open-ended threats

Using their full name "gets their attention". Open-ended threats such as "I'm coming up there, and I won't be coming empty-handed" and "If I have to come in there you're not going to like what happens" work, because according to Emma a child's imagination is a child's greatest strength and also their weakness. They will fill in the blank with the most awful thing they can think of.
10. Brent is amazed and impressed with Emma's sage wisdom. What does he tell her?

Answer: "You're like Yoda."

Emma replied, in her typical serious style, "I don't know what that means."
11. The other residents of Dog River have had traumatic experiences babysitting Wanda's son. What happened to Hank?

Answer: Tied to a recliner directly under a bottomless bird cage

The lasting effects of this experience are apparent when Hank becomes distraught seeing someone pour mayonnaise out of a squeeze bottle.
12. A woman at the gas station is thinking of buying some licorice at the counter. What does Oscar do?

Answer: Yells at her and tells her to leave

Oscar also yells at a couple who are looking at magazines. I think he is my favourite cranky character of all time!
13. What sport were they watching at the bar?

Answer: Rugby

Hank thought it was soccer.
14. Does Wanda return before the end of the show?

Answer: No

The show ends after Tanner is finally sleeping, and Hank arrives and is surprised to find Brent uninjured. Brent tries to take credit, but Lacey tells Hank that Brent phoned his Mommy. "You mean Wanda?" She replies that he phoned his OWN Mommy, Emma, and Hank reveals that Lacey must therefore have won the bet.
15. Who won the bet?

Answer: Lacey

Seems she had an ulterior motive in going over to help Brent babysit! Thanks for playing!
