Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the first episode of the first season, the ex-wife of one of the crew members sails along on the Pacific Princess. Whose ex-wife is on board in this episode?

Answer: Captain Merill Stubing

"The Love Boat" was a series in which several (usually three) main stories were told in each episode, and this showed also in the quite unorthodox titles to each episode. The pilot episode was entitled "The Newly Weds / The Exchange / Cleo's First Voyage", and the first true episode carried the title "Captain and the Lady / One If By Land / Centerfold".
In the story "Captain and the Lady" Captain Merill Stubing finds out his ex-wife has recently wed one of the chief executives of the cruise company exploiting the Pacific Princess.
Captain Merill Stubing was portrayed throughout the series by Gavin McLeod. The series doesn't concentrate on his steering abilities, but many episodes show the Captain inviting a special guest at his table during one of the gala dinners on board.
2. The second season to "The Love Boat" starts with a double episode, on which one of the crew members tries out the cruise as a passenger. Who can now enjoy and taste what someone else prepared?

Answer: The bartender

The bartender Isaac Washington (a role by Ted Lange) is the crew member on a holiday. So he decides to cruise along as a (paying) passenger. Pretending to be rich and famous, he makes a pass at one of the female passengers.
In the episodes where Isaac is on duty, people enjoy not only his cocktails but also his conversation.
For those who wonder: there is no gardener on the Pacific Princess, as this ship doesn't need one. The apothecary and the waitresses are minor characters. If they come into play, their roles are filled by extras.
3. In the fifth episode of the third season, Captain Stubing has a female IRS agent on board, who tries to audit the Captain's financial status. Who insists Captain Stubing should try to loosen up the IRS agent, which proved eventually to be a mistake?

Answer: Julie MacCoy

It is Julie MacCoy, the cruise director, who leads her Captain into some unforeseen wild complications. She noticed the IRS agent was too nervous to do a good job.
The cruise director is the one who welcomes the guests and tries to solve major problems with them. She also organises animation and harbour visits.
Lauren Tewes played the role of Julie MacCoy during the first seven seasons in "The Love Boat".
Shirley Brahms was the young saleswoman in "Are You Being Served?"
Kris Munroe was the blonde one of "Charlie's Angels".
Kelly Bundy was the daughter on the sitcom "Married with Children".
4. In the fourth season, episode 10, a scientist on board is struck by the appearance of one of the female passengers. The scientist suspects the female to be an alien. Whom of the crew members does he convince of this?

Answer: Burl Smith

Burl Smith, commonly known as "Gopher", is the purser on the Pacific Princess. Fred Grandy played this role throughout the series.
The purser is the crew member responsible for the financials as well as for the supplies.
Magnum is the private detective from the eponymous series. Jim Phelps is the chief on "Mission: Impossible". And Napoleon Solo is the main character in "The Man from U.N.C.L.E."
5. In episode 13 of season 5, the ship's doctor introduces his wife to his colleagues. Who plays the newlywed doctor Adam Bricker?

Answer: Bernie Kopell

Adam Bricker (a role by Bernie Kopell) was married just a few hours before the Pacific Princess sets out to sea. He insists to present his bride to his colleagues.
Bernie Kopell (born 1933) started his career as a casino employee in the TV series "Whispering Smith" in 1961. He is best known for his role as Doc Adam Bricker in "The Love Boat", and also played the very same character in an episode of the TV series "Saturday Night Live" and an episode of "Martin".
The red herrings are actors from the TV series "Allo Allo": Gorden Kaye plays René Artois, Richard Marner plays Colonel Kurt von Strohm and Guy Siner plays Lieutenant Hubert Gruber.
6. Episode 23 of season 6 centres on Captain Stubing's daughter, who gets romantically involved with a drug addict. What is the first name of the Captain's daughter?

Answer: Vicki

Jill Whelan played the role of Vicki Stubing, the daughter of Captain Merill Stubing.
In this particular episode, Vicki receives some pills from her boyfriend. When her boyfriend gets ill, Doc Bricker finds out the boyfriend is a drug addict, and the patient's mother accuses Vicki of dealing drugs.
Rachel, Phoebe and Monica are of course the first names of the female protagonists in the TV series "Friends".
7. In season 7 of "The Love Boat", the cruise ship sails to coasts where the crew has not been before. Some episode titles (or part of those) give a hint on the location, see for instance "My Two Dumplings", "Rhino of the Year", "Two Tails of a City" or "The Emperor's Fortune". Near which coasts does season 7 take place?

Answer: Asian

Season 7 is set in Asian waters. The chosen title parts are maybe a bit vague, but mentioning "The Captain and the Geisha" or "The Hong Kong Affair" would give this one away.
The first two episodes are entitled "The Pledge / East Meets West / Roberta / My Two Dumplings" and are set in Chinese waters. The double episode "When Worlds Collide / The Captain and the Geisha / The Lottery Winners / The Emperor's Fortune" (episode 7-8) is set in and around Japan. The ship also visits Hong Kong, as seen in the double episode 19-20.
8. In episode 24 of season 8, one of the plot lines involves Julie MacCoy's sister, who took over as cruise director. What is her first name?

Answer: Judy

Season 8 saw the departure of cruise director Julie MacCoy. Of course her function in the crew had to be filled by someone else, and her sister Judy took over Julie's job.
Pat Klous plays the role of Judy. In this specific episode, an impresario wants to hire Judy as a professional singer, but he hasn't heard her singing before.
Piper, Prue and Phoebe Halliwell are characters from the TV series "Charmed".
9. Season 9 of "The Love Boat" started with the episode "A Day in Port". While the ship gets some repairs, Captain Stubing has an altercation with a meddling labourer named Marty Elder. The actor who plays Marty Elder, is better known from his role as Cliff Clavin in the series "Cheers". Who played the role of Marty Elder?

Answer: John Ratzenberger

All these actors have had a guest role in "The Love Boat".
The correct answer is John Ratzenberger (born 1947), who started his career in 1976 as the patron in the movie "The Ritz". He also had a role in "A Bridge Too Far" (1977).
Dirk Benedict is best known as Templeton Peck from "The A-Team". Patrick Duffy starred as Bobby Ewing in "Dallas". And Lorne Greene is famous for his roles as Ben Cartwright in "Bonanza" and Commander Adama in "Battlestar Galactica".
10. The tenth and final season of "The Love Boat" had only four episodes, contrary to the usual 25 or 26 episodes per season. The double episode in the middle of the tenth season was named after the specific date on which it was aired on ABC. What was the title of this double episode?

Answer: The Christmas Cruise

Believe it or not, but all these titles were used for (one of the) storylines on various episodes of "The Love Boat".
"The Christmas Cruise" (part 1 and part 2) is the title of the episode we're looking for. It was aired on December 25, 1986. Guest roles were for (among others) Leslie Caron and Gina Lollobrigida.
"Aerobic April" refers not to the month, but to a recurring character named April Lopez (played by Charo). Several episodes were named after April, but this specific episode aired in November 1984.
The United States have a secular holiday named Grandparent's Day, observed in debut September. The episode "Third Wheel / Grandmother's Day / Second String Morn" was the final episode of Season 2, aired on May 12, 1979.
"The Zinging Valentine / The Very Temporary Secretary / Final Score" was the twentieth episode of season 6, aired February 12, 1983.
