Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the first famous personalities to appear on "I Love Lucy" was Tennessee Ernie Ford in the two-parter, "Tennessee Ernie Visits" and "Tennessee Ernie Hangs On." What town did his character hail from?

Answer: Bent Fork, Tennessee

Ernie hailed from Bent Fork, Tennessee. The Ricardos and the Mertzes visit Bent Fork a year later on their way to California in the episode, "Tennessee Bound." Mr. Ford stated that the "country slang" his character spoke on the series was truly authentic.
2. William Holden guest starred in the first "I Love Lucy" episode set in California, "L.A. at Last!" But which famous TV personality played a cameo role in one scene in that episode?

Answer: Eve Arden

Eve Arden has one line in the Brown Derby scene before William Holden enters. At that time, Miss Arden was on the Desilu lot, filming "Our Miss Brooks." Years later, she co-starred on the TV Series "The Mothers-In-Law," produced by Desi Arnaz Productions.
3. "The Star Upstairs" guest starred Hollywood actor Cornel Wilde. But Mr. Wilde was not the original choice for this role. Who was?

Answer: Van Johnson

"The Star Upstairs" was originally written for Hollywood actor Van Johnson. When Mr. Johnson could not take the part due to a prior commitment, it was offered to Mr. Wilde. Ironically enough, Mr. Johnson DID get to guest star in an "I Love Lucy" episode ("The Dancing Star"), which was initially written for Ray Bolger!
4. In the episode "Lucy Meets Charles Boyer," Charles Boyer hides his true identity so Lucy would not make a big fuss over him. This basic premise is borrowed for "The Lucy Show" nearly ten years later. Who was the celebrity this time?

Answer: Ethel Merman

In the episode "Lucy Teaches Ethel Merman to Sing," Ethel Merman arrives in town incognito as 'Agnes Schmidlap.' Lucille Ball had been a chorus girl in a few 1930s film musicals which featured Miss Merman.
5. What famous TV personality guest starred on the first hour-long "I Love Lucy" episode, "Lucy Takes a Cruise to Havana"?

Answer: Ann Sothern

Ann Sothern reprised her character from her "Private Secretary" series, "Susie MacNamara," in this episode. Lucille Ball guest starred on Ann Sothern's second television series, "The Ann Sothern Show." Years later, Miss Sothern made several appearances as Rosie, the Countess on "The Lucy Show."
6. The second hour-long "I Love Lucy" episode guest starred Tallulah Bankhead. The original choice to guest star in that episode was Bette Davis. What happened?

Answer: Bette Davis was too ill to play the part.

Miss Davis had a couple of accidents and was too ill to appear in the episode. Tallulah Bankhead, her replacement, walked through the rehearsals for the episode. The evening of filming, she gave a magnificent performance that at times upstaged Lucille Ball.
7. What was interesting about Howard Duff and Ida Lupino, the guest stars of "Lucy's Summer Vacation"?

Answer: Like Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, they were a married couple who played one in a sitcom

At the time of this episode, Mr. Duff and Miss Lupino were a married couple who also had a sitcom where they played one, "Mr. Adams and Eve." Ida Lupino was one of the first female directors in Hollywood, but didn't direct that episode.
8. "Lucy Makes Room for Danny" guest starred Danny Thomas. But what performer who appeared in the final scene, became a staple on Lucille Ball's later TV Series, "The Lucy Show" and "Here's Lucy"?

Answer: Gale Gordon

Gale Gordon, who played the judge on this episode, (and who had initially played 'Mr. Littlefield' on two episodes of "I Love Lucy") went on to be 'Mr. Mooney' on "The Lucy Show" and 'Cousin Harry' on "Here's Lucy." Also, Mr. Gordon had worked with Miss Ball on the radio series "My Favorite Husband."

Mary Jane Croft brought her 'Mary Jane Lewis' character to both "The Lucy Show" and "Here's Lucy," but was not in that episode. She DID play neighbor 'Betty Ramsey' in some of the "I Love Lucy" episodes that took place in Connecticut.
9. Red Skelton and Lucille Ball had never worked together before the "I Love Lucy" episode, "Lucy Goes to Alaska."

Answer: False

Miss Ball and Mr. Skelton co-starred in the 1943 movie, "DuBarry was a Lady," which was Miss Ball's first movie for MGM. Coincidentally, she played a part that had been played on Broadway by Ethel Merman.
10. Desi Arnaz, Jr. was in the last scene of the last "I Love Lucy" thirty minute episode, "The Ricardos Dedicate a Statute." What does Vivian Vance as 'Ethel Mertz' turn and say to him in this scene?

Answer: "Are you having a good time, honey?"

In the Founder's Day dedication scene, 'Ethel Mertz' turns to Desi Arnaz, Jr. and says, "Are you having a good time, honey?"

Some sources state that the little girl standing next to him is Lucie Arnaz (Desi and Lucille's daughter); some say not. I guess since the children weren't given a credit for the episode, we'll never know for sure!

Of course, Desi Arnaz, Jr. and Lucie Arnaz each made a few appearances on "The Lucy Show" before becoming regulars on Lucille Ball's third series, "Here's Lucy."

Well, here we are at the end. And the very end of the very last episode of "I Love Lucy" ["Lucy Meets The Moustache"] (which incidentally guest starred Ernie Kovacks and Edie Adams) seemed to sum up the failed marriage of Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball in just a few lines:

Lucy: "But honest, honey, I was just trying to help."

Ricky: "Thanks. But maybe in the future, you can help by trying NOT to help."

Then the two kissed... for the last time.
