Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first episode of this series started out with the death of a friend. What was the name of this incredible pilot episode?

Answer: Wake

Stuart and Freddie had both discovered their dear friend Clive had passed away. Both men were under the illusion that Clive had been in love with Freddie. This turned out to be incorrect as it was discovered Clive loved Stuart. During the memorial for Clive, Freddie suggested he read one of Clive's letters to the group. Stuart was less than pleased with this decision to have the note read aloud. Freddie found an unopened letter and read all the content of it out loud. Violet discovered the love letter was addressed to Stuart, not Freddie.

The pilot episode "Wake" was first aired on ITV in Britain. The date of the broadcast was April 29th, 2013. The program had very close to 6 million viewers. Mark Ravenhill and Gary Janetti created this wonderfully hilarious comedy. Gary Janetti would later go on to executive produce "The Prince" on HBO Max.
2. Stuart was a homemaker, while Freddie had worked outside of the home. What profession did Freddie have a modicum of success at?

Answer: Actor

Freddie proudly proclaimed to Ash that he had once killed a prostitute on "Coronation Street". Ash was taken aback by this remark until Freddie explained it was one of his many roles. He also stated he did Shakespeare for a period of time. In a later episode, it is revealed that Freddie had also done a commercial with Dame Judi Dench.

Freddie Thornhill was played wonderfully by Sir Ian McKellen. Due to his age, he had not received as many acting jobs as when he was younger. Sir Ian McKellen has been a highly successful stage and screen actor. He had starred as Gandalf in "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" movies. He had also played Magneto in the "X-Men" movies on several occasions.
3. We met one of Freddie and Stuart's dearest friends in this episode. Who kept saying they were frightened they would be violated?

Answer: Violet

Ash who was looking at the flat upstairs, had inadvertently rang Freddie and Stuart's doorbell. He thought this was the apartment he was intending to lease. Stuart informed Ash it was the unit upstairs for rent. Ash asked if he could use the loo while he was in their flat. While Ash was in the bathroom, Violet entered the apartment. She found out the guys were letting a stranger use their bathroom. Violet exclaimed that she was afraid of being violated by the stranger. Stuart had knocked on the door of the loo, but Ash did not answer. Violet once again expressed how terrified she was of being violated. Freddie replied to Violet that no one wanted to violate her. Violet then said what a terrible thing to say.

This is when I knew I would like this series. The banter between Stuart and Freddie and their friends was hilarious. The quick comebacks and razor-sharp insults make this a very funny series to watch indeed.
4. Ash had come down to tell Stuart and Freddie the great news. He told the two men he had gotten the apartment. What did Ash do that caused Freddie and Stuart to react hysterically?

Answer: Ash opened the curtains in the flat of Stuart and Freddie.

Stuart had gone into the kitchen. Freddie was telling Ash that his acting awards were over in the corner. Freddie said, "Please don't go look at them I would be terribly embarrassed". He then pointed to where they were and also went to the kitchen. Ash went over to view the awards and found a cord hanging by the awards.

He pulled the cord, which opened the curtains as Freddie and Stuart were returning to the living room. Both men reacted hysterically to the opened curtains. They quickly retreated to the kitchen.

When they returned composed a mere few seconds later, Freddie chastised Ash for opening the curtains. He told Ash they were done with him for now and he was to leave their flat.
5. Freddie and Stuart had a brief heated discussion about where they were both from. Each thought the other was from a better area. Where did Stuart say he was from?

Answer: Leytonstone

Freddie had just come downstairs for his morning tea. Stuart had just received the word their friend Clive had passed on. Freddie was hurling his usual morning insults at Stuart. Stuart asked Freddie who he thought he was The Earl of Grantham, he said, "You are from Wigan". Freddie countered back and said it was better than being from Leytonstone. Stuart was offended and said, "How dare you I have been to Oxford". Freddie said, "Yes for lunch". Freddie asked their friend Violet if Leytonstone was better than Wigan, and Violet said a bit yes. Freddie then replied, "Bollocks" to Violet's answer.

In real life, Sir Ian McKellen who played Freddie Thornhill is from Wigan. Also, Sir Derek Jacobi who played Stuart Bixby is from Leytonstone.
6. Freddie and Stuart had a number of dogs over their 48-year relationship. What was the reason they said they went through a lot of them very quickly?

Answer: The two men lived in front of a very busy bus route.

Stuart, who was visibly upset by the prospect of a better life with Clive, sat sulking. Freddie said he had given Stuart everything he ever wanted in life. The two men's dear friend, Penelope, pointed out that if they were not together they never would have had their current dog, Balthazar.

She also said they would not have had any of the other dogs either. Ash looked up at the mantle over the fireplace, where there were a number of urns. Freddie explained they had gone through several of the dogs rather quickly.

He explained there used to be a bus route in front of their home.
7. Who was the only person who brought something to the memorial service for Clive?

Answer: Ash

Stuart was serving the two sandwiches he had purchased and cut into tiny pieces. Mason, who later would be revealed in season two as Freddie's brother, was complaining about the size of the sandwiches. Stuart then said he could cut up the item Mason had brought, but Mason brought nothing to the wake. When Ash entered the home of Freddie and Stuart, he had brought a dessert. Stuart looked right at Mason and said, "Oh look someone brought something". Ash asked the group why they were all dressed in black. Stuart explained it was a wake/tea for their dearly departed friend, Clive.

Iwan Rheon played the role of Ash in "Vicious". Ash quickly endeared himself to both Stuart and Freddie. He loved both men dearly, but I think he was closer to Freddie. In this first episode, Freddie was trying to determine if Ash was straight or gay. As Ash was leaving the flat of Freddie and Stuart toward the end of the episode, he told the group he was straight.
8. Who was Stuart speaking to on the phone at the beginning and end of the episode?

Answer: Mother

Stuart's mother told him about the death of Clive over the phone. She also told him that Clive did suffer before he passed away. He suffered a great deal as they had to remove his foot. Stuart told Freddie the news his mother had shared with him. Freddie said, "How is your mother always the first to know someone has passed away?".

He inquired if she was getting the news directly from Satan. At the end of the episode, Stuart's mother called and told him of the passing of their dear friend, Oliver.
9. Freddie had insulted Stuart with a real zinger. He said to Violet, "I never know when I am going too far, but I am so ___ when I do".

Answer: glad

Ash had just left the flat of Stuart and Freddie. Freddie and Stuart were having another argument. Stuart had insulted Freddie about his shameless flirting with Ash. Freddie said he was surprised Stuart had seen it because of his cataracts. Stuart was visibly upset by the latest comment. Stuart would leave the room to get a fresh pot of tea. Freddie looked at Violet and smiled after he made the above comment. Violet was unphased by Freddie's remark as she had been friends with the two men for a long time.
10. Freddie was trying to make amends with Stuart from earlier in the evening. What did Freddie say that quickly won Stuart back over?

Answer: I am sorry.

Freddie had entered the kitchen to pour himself a drink. Stuart was feeding their dog. Freddie asked Stuart if he too would like a drink. Stuart was still not speaking to Freddie because of the things he had said earlier in the evening. Finally, a very visibly upset Stuart told Freddie he did not know how they would ever be able to get past the things he said. Freddie looked at Stuart and said he was sorry. Stuart instantly replied that it was alright. Freddie then gave Stuart his glass of wine.

Ash, who had only recently become acquainted with Freddie and Stuart, was confused by their behavior. When the two men started to bicker, Ash asked if he should leave. The two men looked at him and asked why. They had been acting this way towards each other for well over 40 plus years. Though they would sometimes say some very harsh comments, it is abundantly clear they loved one another deeply.
