Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Finish this quote from Sir Edward Pellew: "In a few hours, you'll be _____________ ."

Answer: On trial for your life

Sir Edward Pellew makes this scolding remark to Hornblower while he is in prison. However, various characters use the phrase "you'll hang from the yardarm" (or similar) throughout this episode.

But why would our hero be behind bars? We get to spend the rest of the episode finding out...
2. Which actor plays the part of Archie Kennedy?

Answer: Jamie Bamber

Archie Kennedy was Jamie Bamber's first role (he appeared in "Hornblower: The Even Chance" straight out of drama school). He has also earned a large following for his starring role as Apollo in "Battlestar Gallactica".

Sam West plays Lord Edrington in "Hornblower: The Frogs and The Lobsters" (USA Title: "The Wrong War"). Orlando Bloom has nothing to do with the "Hornblower" series.
The only made-up actor's name from the above list is, of course, Sam Gilder (thought actor Sean Gilder plays the part of Styles).
3. Who said: "Don't worry, kid. Stick with me, you'll grow up as bitter as the rest of us!"

Answer: Styles

Styles offers some...erm...words of encouragement to a young seaman.
4. What is used to flog young Wellard?

Answer: A rattan

The Captain orders Boatswain Matthews to flog Wellard with his rattan.
5. When Captain Sawyer reveals the ship's destination to the senior officers, Bush says, "A far cry from Napoleon, Sir, but with 10 times more chance of action than with the Channel Fleet." What is Captain Sawyer's reply?

Answer: "Now there's a man after my own heart!"

While the Captain is constantly snapping at the other officers, he seems to have taken a liking to Mr. Bush.

All of the above options were real quotes from this scene, but the incorrect answers were quotes NOT directed at Bush.
6. The part of Horatio Hornblower is played by a Welsh actor. What is his name?

Answer: Ioan Gruffudd

Ioan Gruffudd is probably best known for his role as the young hero, Hornblower, but his fan base is growing fast with popular roles such as Mr. Fantastic in "Fantastic Four" and Lancelot in "King Arthur", co-starring Clive Owen and Keira Knightley.

Sean Gilder, who plays Styles in the "Hornblower" series, also has a small role in "King Arthur".
7. What is Hobbs' position on the ship?

Answer: Gunner

Hobbs is referred to as "Gunner Hobbs". He is often seen working the canons or walking around the gun-deck and he accompanies Hornblower during an attack in which they all make good use of the barrels of gunpowder.
8. Whish character said "Traitors meet their just desserts. Loyal hearts get their rewards."

Answer: Captain Sawyer

These were the words of Captain James Sawyer, in one of the stirring speeches he makes to his men. Unfortunately the warnings contained in the Captain's speeches are directed more at the ship's senior officers, rather than the crew - and crew is becoming more drunk and ill-disciplined by the day.
9. Who was present when the Captain fell down the hatch?

Answer: Wellard, Kennedy and Hornblower

No, this isn't the TV series "Lost"! Long before a hatch was a mysterious white vessel on a Pacific island, Captain James Sawyer fell down a hatch on the Renown and was knocked unconscious.

The big question is: did he fall, or was he pushed? While the television version of this story implies that Hornblower pushed the Captain down the hatch, the original book ("Lieutenant Hornblower" by C.S. Forrester) does not strictly implicate Hornblower. So fans continue to argue the point...pushed or fell?
10. What is the punishment for any seaman or officer who commits or conspires to commit mutiny?

Answer: Death

We hear the Captain reading aloud from The Articles of War to the crew. Paranoid about conspiracies against him, Captain Sawyer emphasises the word "DEATH" many times as he reads Article 19, which refers to mutiny and/or disobedience of orders from a superior officer.
