Krusty: A Biography Trivia Quiz
Life and Times of a Clown
'The Simpsons' is awash with richly developed characters and Krusty the Clown is one such creation who has had his life and personality completely dissected since the show's very first season. Here follows the life and times of a clown.
Krusty the Clown was born Krustofsky, son of Krustofky (a ) and (about whom not much is known). He grew up in the "Lower East Side" of and became estranged from his father once it was discovered that Krusty had started performing as a clown.
Decade after decade, Krusty's green hair, chalk white face and red nose welcomed viewers to episodes of the 'The Krusty the Clown Show'. He featured, at various times, alongside the ever-so-Shakespearean (known for sporting a in his hair), the chain-smoking chimp and the villainous (voiced by 'Frasier' actor, ).
Whilst doing his best to maintain a funny on-screen persona, 'The & Show' - with all its violence, anger and depravity - hinted at the cynical, depressed man existing beneath the clown facade. The string of some fifteen (or more) failed relationships to his name - including 'Husband and Wives' actress and singer - demonstrated his ongoing struggle to hold things together.
At one point, his destructive behaviour seriously caught up with him. After being conned into believing he would be the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize so as to encourage him to leave America for , Krusty was diverted to to face charges brought by the International Court of Justice.
With Krusty's painful disillusionment with showbiz evident through his constant desire to quit 'The Krusty the Clown Show', one could easily be forgiven for thinking that he would have been much happier focussing on his other businesses, be it purveying greasy goods at his fast food chain, , providing an authentic workhouse experience for youngsters at or pushing the boundaries of theme park safety at .
Krusty is said to be in part inspired by the real-life clown called Rusty Nails, a performer that 'The Simpsons' creator Matt Groening grew up watching in Oregon. Rusty Nails is the basis for the name of the tragic animated character (Rusty becoming Krusty) though Groening's overall recollection of Rusty Nails is a positive one and he makes it clear that the negative elements of Krusty's personality aren't a reflection of the Oregon-based entertainer. The toxic Krusty elements are more a general metaphor for the shadow side of show business.
Whilst Rusty Nails is said to have inspired Krusty's name, the voice of the cynical clown is said to have derived from the gravelly tones of Bozo the Clown as portrayed by Michigan-born actor Bob Bell. Krusty's physical appearance is very similar to that of Homer Simpson, a remnant of the ideation phase of 'The Simpsons' where the creators were going to play with the concept of Bart being ashamed of Homer whilst admiring a clownish figure who looked exactly like his dad. This idea fell by the wayside but the similarity in the appearance of the two characters remained. Perhaps it is not surprising then - in the spirit of similarity - that actor Dan Castellaneta provides his voice to both Krusty the Clown and Homer Simpson.
Like many other characters from 'The Simpsons' franchise, Krusty the Clown has made appearances in media other than television. In film, Krusty featured in 'The Simpsons Movie' (2007) but not as a significant character; he uses a pig called Plopper to advertise "The Clogger", an artery-blocking burger. Homer seeks to save Plopper from the grizzly fate of being used to make poor-quality burgers and the pig becomes a family pet.
In the world of video games, the (in)famous clown from 'The Simpsons' gives his name to a puzzler called 'Krusty's Fun House', which was released across a number of platforms in 1992. Well over a quarter of a century later, Krusty made an appearance as a boss in the Battle Royale mode of 'Fortnite', where 'The Simpsons' completely took over the map in 2025.
This short biography ends with perhaps my favourite quote about this complex character: "Despite the clownish exterior (really, just clown exterior), Krusty the Clown possesses arguably the most pathos of any 'Simpsons' character not named Moe Szyslak" (Alex McLevy, 'The A.V. Club' (2015)).
