Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of "Exodus, Part one", in the very first scene, the camera opens to a shot of objects which include all but which?

Answer: A can of soda

This is part of a Michael/Walt flashback, occurring very early in the morning at their hotel, the day before boarding the plane. Walt spreads the wide curtains to reveal a twinkling skyline of the city, and then proceeds to wake up and agitate Michael by turning up the television. Michael proceeded to chase Walt (and Vincent) through the hotel, and told him he had to go on the plane (though Walt very clearly had other wishes.) A clear time difference is defined here, which shows how time has changed for the castaways since before the flight.

In this case, Walt had told Michael that he was not his father in the flashback. In real life, however, Walt ironically wakes Michael up a second time and this time calls him "Dad".
2. What cartoon was Walt watching in the hotel at 5:23 a.m?

Answer: Power Rangers S.P.D

Walt was watching "Power Rangers S.P.D", (the S.P.D stands for "Space Patrol Delta") which coincidentally had not yet been airing in Australia at the time this episode aired. This may suggest a difference in time, possibly even a future tense, or at least some type of clue about the time and date of the flight. Also, the time at which Michael awoke (5:23) was another reference to the "numbers" which seem to appear more frequently.
3. After giving a warning about impending danger, Danielle described to the curious group a "pillar of black smoke" which had appeared before the "others" came to take her child. How far away from her team's camp did she say the smoke had been?

Answer: She did not say how far away the smoke was

After waking up beside Michael in "real" life, Walt wanders away and comes face to face with Danielle Rousseau, lurking in the jungle nearby. After coming upon the camp, a brief panic aroused before Sayid calmed everyone and confronted Danielle. He asked what she was doing there and Danielle replied, "The others are coming."
Danielle explained that her team of six had crashed ground sixteen years ago, when she was seven months pregnant. Her child, Alex (revealed to be a daughter), was taken from her by "the others" after only one week.
Danielle described a pillar of black smoke which was 5 kilometers in length which appeared the night before the others came. She did not say anything about how far away (in relation to her team or the Black Rock) the smoke had been, however.
4. Danielle told the survivors of the others, "Now, they're coming again. They're coming for ______ ____ _______."

Answer: All of you

Jack asked Danielle who was coming, and she replied with urgency, "The others!" She proceeded to give a dire warning: "You have only three choices. Run... hide... or die." She said the others were coming for everyone, but more likely because of Claire's endangered newborn son. Jack and Locke (seemingly reconciled) conversed after, and Jack was doubtful of believing a woman who blew up her own shelter and heard whispering in the jungle.

He claimed that she was not "playing with a full deck" and Locke argued that that did not mean her words were not true. Jack told Locke he could focus on the "what if", but Jack would focus on the tangible- the launching of the raft.
5. When Jack questioned Rousseau a second time about "the others", she ignored him and said there was a bigger problem. According to her, what did the problem concern?

Answer: The survivors themselves

Michael and Jack managed to organize the group and finish the raft in just enough time. With everyone's participation, the raft finally came together, the rudder was finished, and the rails were laid. As Michael ordered the raft to be lifted and pushed toward the water, a lever broke and Sawyer began arguing with Michael.

The bickering halted, however, when Walt called his dad's attention to something in the sky- an ink-black cloud of smoke rising and curling above the jungle. After witnessing the omen, Jack immediately questioned Rousseau, who announced a bigger problem as she loaded her rifle. Danielle could handle "them" in the jungle, but what to do with the forty other people?
6. Danielle was the only person to whom the hatch was revealed in this episode.

Answer: False

The recognition of needing a new plan- and a place to hide the survivors in time for the inevitable arrival of "the others"- led the group to the mysterious hatch once again. Hurley came along this time and also saw the hatch revealed. (He worried if they could all fit inside.) Danielle claimed she knew nothing about it, and had seen nothing like it.
In order to open the hatch, Danielle was asked for more explosives. She immediately referred to dynamite at the Black Rock, in the Dark Territory. Hurley replied, "Well, that's three reasons to go right there."
It was inevitable that soon Hurley would see the cursed lottery numbers inscribed somewhere on the hatch.
7. In Jack's flashback, Jack was seen talking with Ana Lucía (who turned out to be a fellow passenger on the doomed flight). What was Ana Lucía's seat number?

Answer: 42F

Jack and Ana Lucía planned to share drinks later on the plane.
Ana Lucía complained about being above the plane's wheels, and her seat placed her in the tail section of the plane. (The irony in the situation was when Ana Lucía jokingly asked if Jack wanted to trade tickets.)
Both seat numbers were references to the doomed numbers once again (42 and 23). Also, 42 is the Chinese number symbolizing death.
From this encounter it was learned that Jack was no longer married to Sarah, whom he had married in the episode "Do No Harm".
8. Arzt told Jack that he had learned of the plan to blow open the hatch from whom?

Answer: Hurley

Arzt approached Jack and sarcastically corrected his speech about reassuring the crowd. Arzt commented about the plan, and attempting to blow open the hatch with dynamite. He added that no one knew how long the explosives had been out there, and that "Madame Nutso" (a.k.a. Danielle) didn't seem concerned with how to handle it. Arzt told Jack that if he wanted to keep a secret, not to tell Hurley.

He said that, unless they wanted to blow themselves up, he was going along.
9. In Sawyer's flashback, Sawyer is seen in the police station with an Australian official. This scene intersects with one from which previous "Lost" episode?

Answer: "Hearts And Minds"

In Boone's flashback in "Hearts And Minds", in which he speaks to an Australian officer about Shannon's incident, Sawyer was seen being led in handcuffs and yelling about no one wanting to hear his side of the story. (The officer with whom Boone was speaking even commented about, had Shannon's boyfriend been Sawyer, they could help him.) In this scene, the officer reveals Sawyer's full name as "James Ford", and lists his criminal record (which includes assault, bank fraud, identity theft, etc.). He tells Sawyer (his real name discovered to be James Ford) that it would not be worth the cost to incarcerate him and, pulling out an Oceanic ticket, says "You're being deported."
10. With a sudden change of decision before departing, Sawyer finally revealed to Jack his encounter with Jack's father. He did so indirectly, and as Jack began to realize the truth in the story he became overwhelmed with emotion. At what point in the story was Jack forced to turn away from Sawyer?

Answer: When Sawyer said the man felt his son was a better doctor than he was

This was my absolute favorite "Lost" scene of any episode.
Jack gave Sawyer a gun "just in case" and wished him good luck. After slight hesitation, Sawyer called Jack back.
He told Jack that the week before they all had gotten on the plane, he got to talking with a guy in a bar in Sydney. According to Sawyer, the man was an American doctor and had a son who was also a doctor. (It was at this point that Jack's expression revealed that he had realized who the man was.) Sawyer went on about their big fight and explained the call the man- Christian- wished to make. He told Jack what Dr. Shepard had wanted to say, indirectly relaying the message that was never sent. When he came to the part about Jack's father saying that his son was a better doctor than he'd ever be, Jack was forced to turn away in order to conceal his tears. Sawyer ended the story by saying, "Something tells me he never got around to making that call. Small world, huh?"
He wished Jack good luck in return as Jack headed off on the hike to the Black Rock and Sawyer to the raft.
11. What is Dr. Arzt's first name?

Answer: Leslie

Locke, Kate, Hurley, Dr. Arzt, and Jack were following Danielle on a hike towards the "Black Rock" in hopes of finding explosives to blow open the hatch. At the end of the line on a narrow hillside Arzt and Hurley conversed about the pronunciation of Arzt's name, during which time Hurley suggested that he be called by his first name "Leslie". (Arzt strongly opposed this idea with a teacher-like reprimanding.) Meanwhile, his last name translates to "physician" in German.

In the jungle, Arzt attempted to leave after hearing about Danielle's partner losing his arm.

He was chased by the monster, which Danielle explained was a "security system" to protect the island. While on the hike, Locke noticed four sharp scratches on Danille's forearm and called her attention to them.

She explained them away- too easily- as what Locke described as a "mean bush". Finally the group came to the Black Rock, which turned out to be a wooden ship. (Very likely, the one on which Danielle's science team had come.)
12. In Shannon's flashback, what was she doing in the airport before Sayid approached her?

Answer: Doing word search puzzles

The various flashbacks in this episode allowed for a glimpse into not one but many intersecting events in a single time period (just before getting on the plane).
Shannon's flashback was particularly enjoyable- yet ironically depressing- because Boone made a reappearance.
Shannon was in the airport lounge, entertaining herself with a word search book (on the cover could clearly be read "Super Word Search Puzzles") when Sayid asked her to watch his bags. Shannon was rude to both Sayid and Boone, who told her that one day she'd appreciate all he did for her. Shannon proved that she could do "whatever she wanted" by indirectly suggesting to an airport official that Sayid was a terrorist. This was a prime example of how everything had changed for Shannon (and Sayid) a mere month later.
13. In the flashback, Sun and Jin were seen in the airport coffee shop seated near a haughty and opinionated American couple. After making several inconsiderate comments while watching Sun and Jin, the woman said "My God, it's "Memoirs Of A _________" come to life."

Answer: Geisha

When the woman saw Sun bring Jin coffee and give him a napkin, she sarcastically told her husband to shoot her if she ever did the same. Her husband, busy on the Palm Pilot, commented about a statistic that divorce rates for "them" were 20 percent lower than their own. Sun was listening (and understanding) and spilled coffee on Jin accidentally. Jin jumped up and although there were no subtitles, their gestures showed that Jin had asked where the restrooms were. Sun pointed and Jin left, and Sun was visibly upset to hear the woman make another rude comment.

The woman incorrectly and stereotypically referred to Sun as a "Geisha" (which is, in fact, affiliated with skilled Japanese women)and told her husband carelessly, "Relax, they don't speak English."
14. When Sun gave Jin the book with Korean words (spelled phonetically to be pronounced as English words), which word did Jin read out loud?

Answer: Starboard

As Jin was preparing to take off on the raft with Michael, Walt and Sawyer, Sun approached him one last time to say farewell. She brought with her a handmade book, which she explained had English words spelled out in Korean. Jin read the word "starboard", and Sun said she made it because she thought it would help him.

Here, Jin finally broke down and apologized to Sun. He told her that he was on the island because he was being punished, and that he had to go because he was going to save her. He told her to stay with Jack, because he would keep her safe. Sun tearfully asked, "Who will keep you safe?" They embraced with renewed love before his departure.
15. The last scene of the episode was the raft sailing into the blue horizon, yet there was a visible gray shadow lurking beneath the ocean ahead.

Answer: False

Although there did appear to be some type of darkness below one area amidst the blue of the ocean (to the left of the raft), this was not the final scene of the episode.
On the beach, castaways of friends (and less cordial acquaintances) celebrated what they believed to be their way to escape the island. Charlie gave a collection of "messages in a bottle" to Sawyer, Sun said good-bye to Jin, and Walt gave Shannon a treasured gift, Vincent. (His explanation of talking to the dog after a tragedy resembled the story Locke had told of a mysterious golden retriever who had once comforted his mother when his sister died.) The survivors exchanged handshakes and hugs. Before their departure, Sun even hugged Michael, which was a big step because in Korean culture hugging is primarily reserved for family or close friends.
Just after the raft was shown setting sail into the horizon ahead, with its masts raised triumphantly, the scene cut back once again to the eerie cloud of smoke rising up from the island- an ominous warning of the danger ahead.
