Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Schillinger is initially sentenced to 8 years for aggravated assault. He is given an additional 10 years for which crime, committed whilst in prison?

Answer: Conspiracy to commit murder

Although Schillinger has committed all the crimes listed above, he is sentenced for paying CO Dianne Whittlesey to murder Tobias Beecher. Whittlesey lets him believe that she will commit the crime, when in fact she has reported Schillinger to the Warden.

Schillinger was initially sent to Oz in 1992, after beating a black drug dealer who was trying to sell drugs to Schillinger's sons. Drugs are one of the only things Schillinger hates as much as he does non-white people, so to find his children being targeted pushed him to extreme measures.
2. Why has Schillinger disowned his sister?

Answer: She married a Jewish man.

Schillinger is extremely racist and is very upset that his sister, who apparently doesn't share his extreme beliefs, has married a Jewish man. We briefly see her in the later seasons of the show, and we also meet his father, Heinrich, and his two sons, Hank and Andrew. All three men share Schillinger's racist outlook. Schillinger also had a wife, Arlene, who he loved very much, but who passed away some years before the events of the show.
3. When Beecher throws a chair through the glass wall of Schillinger's cell, where is Schillinger injured?

Answer: Eye

Beecher had been Schillinger's "prag" for some time. Schillinger grows tired of him and sends him out among the black inmates, wearing a Confederate flag on his shirt. Beecher knows he will probably be killed for this and he finally snaps, flinging a chair at Schillinger through a pane of glass. Schillinger's eye is cut and there is some concern that he might be permanently blind.

Although Schillinger does retain his sight, he is left with a large scar down the side of his face.
4. Why doesn't Schillinger participate in the riot?

Answer: He has a parole hearing coming up, and doesn't want to damage his chances of going free.

Schillinger hears from his father that both of his sons have gone off the rails and are using drugs. Realising that his sons need him, Schillinger decides to stay out of trouble before his upcoming parole hearing, hoping to demonstrate that he has changed.

He was in the hospital previously, due to the injury to his eye, but had been released by the time the riot starts. Not only does Schillinger fail to make his parole, he ends up with the additional ten years added to his sentence.
5. When the reputation of the Aryan Brotherhood begins to flag, who does Schillinger arrange the murder of?

Answer: Alexander Vogel

Schillinger knows that in order to prove that the Aryan Brotherhood are still powerful he needs to kill someone with a reputation for being tough. He picks Vogel, a Russian Jew, and leaves his body hanging upside-down and naked in the gym with "Jew" carved onto his chest.

There is not enough evidence to prove that Schillinger arranged the murder, though the whole prison knows that he is responsible. Schillinger later forces Richie Hanlon to confess to the crime and he is sent to death row. When Richie's death penalty is overturned, he returns to Emerald City, only to be killed by Vogel's friend Nikolai Stanislofski, who is out for revenge.
6. After his son, Andrew, makes it clear that he is done with Schillinger and his way of life, how does Schillinger cause Andrew's death?

Answer: He gives Andrew a large amount of heroin, knowing he will overdose.

Andrew has a heroin addiction, which Schillinger's enemies, Beecher and Keller, help him to overcome. Schillinger is upset that his enemies managed to do the one thing he could never do, help his son get clean. He tries to make amends with Andrew, but Andrew won't forgive Schillinger for a lifetime of abuse and he attacks his father, landing himself in the hole. Schillinger pays Len Lopresti to leave Andrew with a large bag of heroin, which Andrew takes all in one go and dies from an overdose.
7. How do Schillinger and the other Aryans drive Carl Jenkins to suicide?

Answer: They send him pictures of black people who have been hanged and lynched.

After the intervention of Reverend Cloutier, Carl Jenkins informs the Warden that the Aryan Brotherhood - in particular James Robson - was responsible for a murder. While Jenkins is living in solitary confinement, Schillinger posts an envelope full of highly distressing images of murdered black people, along with a note, which can't be repeated on a family site! Realising that he is likely to suffer a painful death at the hands of the Brotherhood, Jenkins kills himself.
8. Why does Schillinger ostracise James Robson from the Aryan Brotherhood?

Answer: Robson receives tissue from a black donor during surgery.

After having a chronic toothache, Robson goes to the dentist and discovers he needs surgery, which involves having the tissue from a cadaver transplanted onto his gums. The dentist, a Muslim named Dr. Faraj, deals with a barrage of racist abuse from Robson during his examination.

As Robson is coming out of the anaesthetic, Dr Faraj tells him that he made sure Robson's donor was black. When finding this out, Schillinger kicks Robson out of the Aryan Brotherhood, albeit with some regret.
9. Schillinger spends some time in solitary confinement. He is informed at his review that it has been decided that he can be sent back to Unit B after a 6-1 vote in his favour. Who does Schillinger suspect voted against him?

Answer: Sister Peter Marie

Schillinger gets put in solitary after Beecher tells the Warden of Schillinger's part in Adam Guenzel's rape and death. All the inmates in solitary are given a review, and Schillinger believes (probably correctly, as she doesn't disagree when asked) that Sister Peter Marie was the sole person to vote against him. Sister Peter Marie quite often sees through Schillinger's lies and, as she has a close relationship with Beecher, she finds it very difficult to be sympathetic towards Schillinger.
10. Which play is Schillinger acting in when he is killed?

Answer: Macbeth

Beecher and Schillinger both act in the prison production of "Macbeth", playing MacDuff and Macbeth. Chris Keller is in charge of props. Earlier on, Keller demonstrates to Beecher that he has a prop knife, which has a retractable blade, and an identical real knife. During the play, Beecher stabs Schillinger, as per the script, only to discover he has been given the real knife. Schillinger dies and Beecher is never charged.
