Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Hanna-Barbera/Screen Gems adventure cartoon included "Race" Bannon, Dr. Zin and Hadji?

Answer: Jonny Quest

"The Adventures of Jonny Quest" aired 1964-1965 on Friday nights on ABC. The episodes were then rerun on Saturday mornings for the next 20 years. In the 1980s, some new episodes were produced that were shorter and less violent; they were shown as part of a package of cartoons in the show "The Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera".
2. Which 1960s cartoon superhero was resurrected for a 1990s Cartoon Network parody titled "______ Coast to Coast"?

Answer: Space Ghost

The original "Space Ghost" ran from 1966-68 with the title character battling villains with the help of two teenager sidekicks and a monkey. In 1994, Cartoon Network resurrected the Ghost for a spoof of late-night talk shows titled "Space Ghost Coast to Coast". In this format, Space Ghost and some of the characters from the original cartoon interviewed current celebrities.
3. Which person, who once held a Doctor of Education degree, produced and acted in a cartoon series featuring inner-city youth presenting life lessons?

Answer: Bill Cosby

The show "Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids" premiered in 1972, and Bill Cosby earned his Ed.D. in 1976 from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. Mr. Cosby discussed the use of the cartoon as an elementary education tool in his dissertation.
4. Which PBS show, originating from WGBH Boston, was largely produced by kids and asked the audience to "turn off the TV and do it!"?

Answer: Zoom

"Zoom" originally aired from 1972-1978 and again from 1999-2005. You no doubt remember the jingle encouraging the audience to write to the show: "Write Zoom, Z-Double-O-M, Box 3-5-0, Boston, Mass 0-2-1-3-4: send it to Zoom!".
5. Which short program that appeared between other shows presented educational material covering science, civics, grammar, history and math?

Answer: Schoolhouse Rock

"Schoolhouse Rock" originally ran 1973-1985 on ABC. Other ABC Saturday morning shows were shortened by three minutes to accommodate the "Schoolhouse Rock" episode. Seasons included "Multiplication Rock", "Science Rock" and "America Rock", the latter containing the popular episode "I'm Just a Bill".
6. Which children's sketch comedy educational show counted Bill Cosby, Mel Brooks, Rita Moreno and Morgan Freeman in the cast?

Answer: The Electric Company

"The Electric Company" was meant to appeal to older elementary school children who had graduated from "Sesame Street"; both programs were produced by the Children's Television Workshop. "The Electric Company" ran for six seasons, 1971-1977, before being cancelled to make way for the more popular and lucrative "Sesame Street".
7. This cartoon franchise began in 1969 and in 2013 was ranked by "TV Guide" as the fifth greatest cartoon of all time. Which cartoon detective show featured characters Fred, Daphne, Velma and Shaggy?

Answer: Scooby-Doo

Scooby-Doo is a franchise that includes at least 12 differently-titled shows appearing on many networks. The original series was "Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!"
8. Which kid's show premiered in 1969 and featured the first live-action life-sized dinosaur?

Answer: H.R. Pufnstuf

Only 17 episodes of "H.R. Pufnstuf" were made and originally aired from September to December 1969. However, they were so popular that the show ran as reruns through 1985. Paul Simon sued and won the right to be listed as co-author of the show's self-titled theme song, which he showed was too similar to his "The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)."
9. Which cartoon animal from 1960s TV had a sidekick walrus named Chumley?

Answer: Tennessee Tuxedo

"Tennessee Tuxedo and His Tales" (get it, "tuxedo and tails"?) follows the title penguin and his buddy Chumley in adventures from Megapolis Zoo. Don Adams voiced Tennessee early in his career, before adding Inspector Gadget to his repertoire.
10. Which cartoon hero is the alter ego of mild-mannered Shoeshine Boy?

Answer: Underdog

Wally Cox voiced both Shoeshine Boy and Underdog. The transformation from nerd to hero was usually in response to a villain threatening TV reporter Sweet Polly Purebred, Underdog's secret love interest.
