Answer: American Idol

Kelly Clarkson won the first season and released "A Moment Like This" as her debut single. The show has propelled many artists to popularity, some winners and some not. The winner received a record contract, as did some of the other participants.

Answer: The Sing Off

Nota, a group from Puerto Rico, won the first season. Though not a long-lived show, this show brought together all manner of folk from professionals to school students. The a cappella singers were responsible for the musical arrangements as well as the vocal performance.
3. Hosted by Graham Norton; contestants audition both off- and on-screen for the role of 'Maria' in "The Sound of Music" (UK).

Answer: How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?

Through several stages of auditions, contestants were eliminated until ten remained. The television show series started with the ten, and once the public voted, one contestant was eliminated each week. Connie Fisher was the final winner and received a six-month contract to play the part in a West End production.
4. Hosted by Ahmet Zappa; celebrity singing competition for charitable donation (US).

Answer: But Can They Sing?

Only aired for a single season, this series was six shows which featured nine celebrities competing vocally. The winner's favorite charity would received $50,000. The winner, Michael Copon, had the money donated to Shaken Baby Alliance.
5. Originally hosted by David Jacobs (1957); participants perform for the chance to compete in the "Eurovision" final (UK).

Answer: Festival of British Popular Songs

The show has had several other names through the years: "Eurovision Song Contest British Final" (1959-60), "A Song for Europe" (1961-95, 2000-03), "The Great British Song Contest" (1996-99), "Eurovision: Making Your Mind Up" (2004-07), "Eurovision: Your Decision" (2008), "Eurovision: Your Country Needs You" (2009-10), and "Eurovision: You Decide" (starting in 2016). Contestants perform on television and the audience votes to determine the winner.

Answer: I Will Survive

The Broadway version of "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" would close before the show "I Will Survive" finished, but the winner, Michael Snell, did receive $250,000 and purportedly the opportunity for another performance.

Answer: The Four: Battle for Stardom

This show format requires winners to sing live for a studio audience and the panel of judges will then determine if they continue or not. Artists compete in any genre of music. The winner of the first series was Evvie McKinney.

Answer: The Glee Project

In season one, there were actually two winners, Damian McGinty and Samuel Larsen. McGinty played Rory Flanagan, a foreign exchange student. Samuel Larsen played Joe Hart, a new student who has only been home schooled.

Answer: Over the Rainbow

This show was the same format as "Over the Rainbow" in the UK in 2010. Auditions were set up in various stages and eliminations done until ten contestants remained. Those ten would compete during the series, with one elimination per week. Danielle Wade was the winner and performed the role at the Ed Mirvish Theatre.

Answer: The Voice of Holland

"The Voice" format has now been repeated in many countries, but started with this show in 2010. In this show, the coaches cannot see the competing singer, but must select them based on their voice and song selection.
