Clay hired someone to kill Tara because of the letters. He planned to have her taken out on her trip to Oregon but everything went wrong when he found out that Jax and their boys were with her. She was kidnapped and Jax chased them down and rescued her, but her hand was smashed in the van door.

Clay killed him because he tried to bully him out of the cartel deal by telling him he had the letters. Piney hid out at the cabin and Clay showed up there looking for the letters and ended up shooting him.

Clay beat up Gemma because she found out about the hit on Tara. She got Tara to tell her where the letters were and, once she retrieved them, she took a few of them out and gave the rest to Jax. She also told him that Clay killed John Teller (Jax's father) and tried to have Tara killed. She told him that he had to kill Clay.

Opie went up to the cabin to check on his dad (Piney). When he got there, Piney was dead. Unser followed him up to the cabin and told him that Clay killed his father. After having Piney cremated, Opie went looking for Clay and found him at the clubhouse and shot him.
