Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The bloody Romulan assault that history came to know as the Khitomer Massacre killed nearly 4,000 Klingon colonists, including much of Lt. Worf's biological family. Which was the first Federation ship to respond to the Klingons' distress calls following this massacre?

Answer: USS Intrepid

Sergey Rozhenko, Worf's human foster father, was serving aboard the Intrepid when it answered the distress call. In "Sins of the Father," Mogh, Worf's biological father, is accused by the Klingon High Council of having betrayed his people to the Romulans at Khitomer.

In his capacity as Worf's "Cha'DIch," Captain Picard discovers that the accusations against Mogh are fraudulent. It was in fact Ja'rod, father of council member Duras, who supplied the Romulans with valuable strategic information prior to the Khitomer offensive. Mogh was selected by the High Council as a scapegoat in the hope that deflecting the blame away from Ja'rod would appease the powerful Duras and prevent internecine fighting within the Empire. Understanding the disastrous political ramifications of exposing Duras' treachery, Worf reluctantly accepts discommendation (rendering him a pariah among Klingons).

The machinations of the High Council would ultimately prove futile after the Empire is plunged into civil war in "Redemption, Part I."
2. Fans are treated to a guessing game in the episode "Allegiance." Captain Picard is abducted by unknown aliens and held in captivity with three other individuals. As attempt after attempt to escape proves fruitless, the four captives begin to suspect one another of collaborating with those responsible for their imprisonment. Captain Picard develops an initial suspicion of Mitena Haro, an apparent Bolian and Starfleet cadet, after she makes reference to which recent Enterprise mission (central to the plot of a previous "TNG" episode)?

Answer: The cultural contamination scare on Mintaka III ("Who Watches the Watchers?")

The Enterprise captain found it "unlikely" that a first-year cadet such a Haro would know of the Enterprise's recent mission to Mintaka III, but that observation alone wasn't enough to convince Picard that Haro wasn't whom she claimed to be. Picard decides to test Haro by making reference to an explicitly classified Enterprise mission; when Haro confirms details of that mission, it becomes clear to that captain that she is an impostor (which "she" is indeed revealed to be). Meanwhile, a replica of Picard poses as our distinguished captain aboard the Enterprise, though it doesn't take the senior staff very long to become suspicious of this eccentric doppelganger. Episodes to feature bona fide doubles of the crew include "We'll Always Have Paris," "Time Squared," and "Second Chances."
3. While reluctantly vacationing on Risa in "Captain's Holiday," Captain Picard serendipitously meets Vash, a colorful archaeologist and unapologetic profiteer. The two embark upon a journey to recover the mythical Tox Uthat, a piece of technology that is capable of halting stellar fusion. In which century will this artifact supposedly be invented?

Answer: 27

The 27th-century Vorgon criminals Ajur and Boratus, posing as security agents, appear to Picard on Risa and instruct him to deliver the Tox Uthat when he finds it. The captain eventually becomes suspicious of the pair and chooses to destroy the artifact, rather than let it fall into potentially dangerous hands. Vash pays Picard a visit aboard the Enterprise in the fourth-season episode "Qpid," while station Deep Space Nine has the honor of hosting the roguish archaeologist in "Q-Less" ("DS9").
4. Tam Elbrun, the eccentric but unusually gifted Betazoid first-contact specialist, is attached to the Enterprise during a mission to make contact with "Tin Man," an enormous spacefaring organism found in orbit of a star about to go nova. Does Elbrun possess the innate ability to make telepathic contact over distances on the order of light-years?

Answer: No

Counselor Troi points out that such extensive telepathy should be impossible, even for a telepath as gifted at Elbrun. Tam reasons that while it may be impossible for him, it is no doubt possible for "Tin Man" (whose true name is revealed as "Gomtuu"). Gomtuu indeed proves capable of making contact with the Betazoid while the Enterprise is still many light-years away from Gomtuu's location.

At the end of the episode "Tin Man," Elbrun and Gomtuu, both of whom suffer from existential loneliness, decide to journey together, exploring the galaxy.
5. "Hollow Pursuits" introduces us to resident nervous-wreck Lt. Reginald "Reg" Barclay, a socially inept but talented engineer who seeks refuge from his real life in the holodeck. Of the following, whose holographic representation is Lt. Barclay NOT seen attacking during the course of this episode?

Answer: He attacks all of these simulations

While the diminutive "Number One" is not seen fighting with Barclay in the "Three Musketeers" simulation, the fantasy-prone engineer is seen thrashing a simulation of Commander Riker in Ten Forward at the beginning of the episode. Picard, Data and La Forge are cast in the roles of Porthos, Athos and Aramis (though not necessarily in that order), while Troi portrays the insouciant "Goddess of Empathy." Barclay goes on to become a recurring character on both "The Next Generation" and "Voyager."
6. Kivas Fajo, an unscrupulous Zibalian trader and connoisseur of rare objects, decides to add Lt. Commander Data to his collection in "The Most Toys." Which of the following original human works of art is NOT among those in possession of Fajo?

Answer: "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon" (Picasso)

The "Mona Lisa" and "The Persistence of Memory" are both seen on screen, while "The Starry Night" is listed by the Enterprise computer as an item in Fajo's inventory. The Zibelian and his crew stage Data's apparent death in a shuttle accident, although the Enterprise eventually recognizes that the android is most likely being held captive by Fajo. Viewers are led to believe that Data would have succeeded in vaporizing Fajo had the Enterprise not beamed the resolutely ethical android back home at the moment he was discharging his weapon (an illegal Varon-T disruptor). Data rationalizes his action after Fajo murders Varria, Fajo's long-time associate; the android reasons that if he does not in turn kill Fajo, the depraved Zibelian trader will continue to inflict harm upon others.
7. In "Sarek," we witness the return of the preeminent Vulcan diplomat and father of the legendary Spock. By the time of this episode, Sarek is suffering from Bendii Syndrome, a neurodegenerative disorder affecting older Vulcans that is marked by the progressive loss of emotional control. To make a conclusive diagnosis of this disease, a biopsy must be taken from which region of the Vulcan brain?

Answer: Metathalamus

Although Sarek initially dismisses the notion that he is being afflicted by Bendi Syndrome, it eventually becomes evident to Sarek that he is experiencing a profound difficulty in suppressing his emotions. In order to facilitate successful negotiations with the Legarans and solidify Sarek's emotional control, the Vulcan ambassador agrees to a mind-meld with Captain Picard.

This action takes a devastating toll on the captain, who becomes burdened with a plethora of intense Vulcan memories and emotions.

In a particularly poignant scene, Patrick Stewart is able to showcase his masterful acting abilities as Picard wrestles with awesome weight of Sarek's inner being. The effects of Bendii Syndrome are also unwittingly projected onto the Enterprise crew telepathically, resulting in some uncharacteristic tensions between Geordi and Wesley, Dr. Crusher and Wesley, and Picard and Riker, among others.
8. Owing in part to his efforts in rescuing Riker, Counselor Troi and her mother from the Ferengi DaiMon Tog in "Ménage à Troi," Wesley Crusher is granted a full commission as ensign by Captain Picard. This the first time on "TNG" that we witness Wil Wheaton donning an official Starfleet uniform.

Answer: False

I hope it was obvious that the answer here was "false," but can you identify the episode in which Wheaton is seen wearing a red Starfleet uniform? It was only a few episodes earlier in "Yesterday's Enterprise," where an alternate Wesley Crusher is apparently functioning as full ensign. Yet another alternate Wesley is seen with a gold uniform in "Parallels." The "real" Crusher was officially accepted to Starfleet Academy in "Ménage à Troi," though he forfeits the opportunity to matriculate when he elects to remain on the Enterprise to rescue his crewmates. Wesley eventually leaves for the Academy in the fourth-season "Final Mission."
9. Fear of the unknown is a theme central to "Transfigurations," the penultimate episode of "TNG's" third season. Dr. Crusher and the Enterprise rescue a Zalconian outcast, "John Doe," from near-death and seek to return him to his people. A number of other Zalconians had fled their homeworld with Doe but were killed in their escape attempt. How many others were there?

Answer: 3

Like "John Doe," the others were evolving into a higher form of life and were consequently castigated by many in Zalconian society. John Doe tells Sunad, a Zalconian captain who demands the return of Doe so that he can be executed, that he and other Zalconians could learn a lot from the tolerance and understanding shown to John by those aboard the Enterprise. Just as the crew saved Doe's life, Doe returns the favor, utilizing his newfound powers of healing to save the Enterprise crew after Sunad deploys a weapon that causes the crew to asphyxiate.
10. "I am Locutus...of Borg. Resistance...is futile. Your life, as it has been...is over. From this time forward...you will service...us." "The Best of Both Worlds, Part I" is regarded by many as one of the finest "Star Trek" episodes ever produced. It left many fans wondering over the summer of 1990 whether Captain Picard was being written out of the series. Before he is abducted by the Borg and assimilated, Picard shares a philosophical moment together with Guinan in Ten Forward. Which famous naval battle does the captain reference in this discussion?

Answer: Trafalgar

The Battle of Trafalgar was fought in 1805 between the British Admiral Horatio Nelson and the combined Spanish and French fleets under Napoleon's flag. Just as Nelson had toured his ship, the HMS Victory, before that epic battle, Picard makes his rounds aboard the Enterprise on the eve of an inevitable Borg confrontation. Guinan reminds the captain that although the British won the battle, Nelson wouldn't survive to see his victory (his lung was pierced by a bullet during the engagement). Although this exciting two-part episode ostensibly focuses around Picard and his assimilation, "The Best of Both Worlds" is just as interesting a character study of William T. Riker, who is left struggling with the nature of command throughout these episodes. "Mr. Worf...fire." :)
