Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Starfleet Code section 12, paragraph four, deals with what away mission regulation?

Answer: The captain may not take part in away missions

This regulation was presumably instituted after Capt. James Kirk's commission ended, as he joined almost every away mission under his command. Captain Picard may have done so as well, but Commanders Data and Riker always reminded him of his obligations aboard the Enterprise.
2. What is the yield of a photon torpedo carried by an Intrepid-class starship?

Answer: 25 isotons

The yield of these torpedoes can be increased if needed. Captain Janeway increased the yield of one of her torpedoes to 200 isotons when combating Species 8472, and the Borg have attempted to increase a torpedo to 5 million isoton yield. Janeway notes that such a weapon would have effects reaching out as far as five light years.
3. What was the Dominion's primary tactical advantage and strategic approach?

Answer: Increased ship production; effective blitzkrieg strategies

Whereas this did allow the Dominion to quickly "blitz" their opponents, it lowers the quality of their ships. However, they can recover their losses quickly, as Worf notes in the final episode of "Deep Space Nine".
4. No Klingon Birds of Prey was able to fire while cloaked.

Answer: False

General Chang modified his Bird of Prey to fire while cloaked during the Khitomer Incident ("Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country").
5. You are facing a Romulan Warbird that has gone to cloak. What method can you use to neutralize the cloak?

Answer: Fire low-yield photon torpedoes, then scan for photon displacement

Commander Data first uses this tactic during the Khitomer Tachyon Blockade.
6. What is the best way to neutralize a tractor beam that is holding your ship?

Answer: Send a feedback pulse along the beam to blow out the enemy's emitters

This tactic is used a great deal in "Voyager".

Side note: In "Star Wars", the Rebel Alliance uses debris to scatter Imperial tractor beams. That is, until Grand Admiral Thrawn found a way to counter such a tactic.
7. You must transport a hostage off of an enemy ship, but their shields are up. What sort of pulse would you fire to force them to drop their shields, without endangering the hostage?

Answer: Tachyon

This tactic is used in "Star Trek: Insurrection". A tachyon pulse forces shield harmonics to destabilize, and since the only way to re-align them is to drop shields, they present a very nice window of opportunity.
8. If attacked by a Borg Cube, which offensive tactic would be most effective, assuming you are the only ship in the sector?

Answer: Set phasers to randomly rotating modulations and target their weapons array

Each of these tactics have been employed against the Borg. However, this situation only allows for one to be effective. Targeting the power grid is only effective when there is a large fleet of ships acting together, as at the Battle of Sector 001. USS Voyager did manage to destroy a Borg vessel by beaming an active torpedo into its power core; however, Voyager was facing a small, damaged scout ship, rather than a fully armed Cube. Given the size of a Borg Cube, a ramming attack would have almost no effect, assuming it succeeded. If, as with the Defiant at the Battle of Sector 001, you have no options remaining, it is worth trying. The Enterprise-D did have some success in destroying weapons emitters on a Cube during their first few encounter with Borg vessels, allowing them to make a hasty retreat. Setting phasers to a rotating modulation will make it harder for the Borg to adapt to your weapons, allowing you to do more damage.
9. A prisoner has escaped the brig, entered a shuttle bay, and bypassed security to keep you from opening the door or accessing command functions for the bay. A shuttle launch sequence has been initiated, and cannot be aborted from the bridge. What do you do?

Answer: Power the tractor beams, to snare the shuttle as soon as it leaves the bay

Shuttle thieves have no problem smashing through a force field, particularly if they are in as desperate a situation as a fugitive. However, the ship and the shuttle would be damaged severely, so it is best to avoid a shuttle-force field conflict.
The thief already has enough time to go to warp, so sending a second shuttle to pursue him would be futile.
Once the launch sequence has been initiated, it is inadvisable to remove the only person in the bay, especially if the bay is sealed and a launch sequence has begun. The bay could decompress, and since all command functions for the area are locked out, there would be no way to re-compress. Letting the launch sequence finish is safest, and tractoring the shuttle until the thief can be beamed back to his cell is most efficient.
10. An incoming Romulan Warbird is detected on sensors. As tactical officer, what course of action should you take?

Answer: None of these

As tactical officer, this is not your decision. Your commanding officer will tell you which of these courses to follow, depending on the situation. Therefore, your only action should be to report the presence of a potentially hostile force and await orders.
