Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Flying close to a nebula just as Captain Janeway was coming to grips with facing a morning without coffee, what did sensors indicate was in the nebula?

Answer: omicron particles

If Voyager could capture some of the omicron particles in the nebula they could replenish their antimatter reserves which would, among other things, let them use the replicators more frequently. As Janeway said: "There's coffee in that nebula!"
2. In the episode, Chakotay introduced Janeway to the Native American idea of a spirit guide. Which psychologist did Chakotay say used the "active imagination" technique?

Answer: Carl Jung

In telling Janeway how Native Americans use animals as spirit guides, Chakotay mentioned that 20th century psychologist Carl Jung developed techniques which were similar to those Chakotay's people had been using for centuries. Their belief was that certain representations of animals would guide them through life. This was done through a vision quest, a ritual used to achieve guidance from a spirit.
3. In "The Cloud" we were introduced to one of Tom Paris' favorite holoprograms. It was a recreation of "Chez Sandrine", a bistro where Paris spent most of a semester while at Starfleet Academy. Where was the 'real' Sandrine's located?

Answer: Marseille, France

Sandrines's was a bistro where Paris spent much of his time while stationed in Marseille, France for physical training during his second semester. A pool table was the central attraction and the place was peopled by quite a cast of characters. Sandrine's was visited several times by the crew during the first three seasons.
4. After discovering that the nebula was actually a life form and they had injured it, Janeway was looking for ways to heal it. As the Doctor, via viewscreen, enumerated the damage Voyager had done, what did Janeway do?

Answer: turned off his audio

While speaking from Sickbay the Doctor sardonically ticked off the mistakes the crew made when trying to get inside the nebula so Janeway, tired of his constant pedantic lectures, cut off his audio channel. After finally turning it back on they found the Doctor did have an idea of how to help the nebula.
5. How many photon torpedoes did Voyager have when it left Deep Space Nine?

Answer: 38

As Janeway looked for ways to get in and out of the nebula, Chakotay mentioned that they had 38 photon torpedoes at their disposal, to which Janeway said that they had no way to replace them after they were gone. We don't know what the normal complement of photon torpedoes was for an Intrepid-class ship but we got the impression that 38 was less than normal. And apparently they were not something that could be replicated.

This became a big deal as the series went on because as the torpedoes were used against enemies, obsessive fans (and let's be honest: if we're Trekkers we have to obsess) knew exactly how many were left and spread it over the internet, creating some problems for the script writers.
6. Who was the pool hustler Tom Paris had programmed into his 'Chez Sandrine' holoprogram?

Answer: Gaunt Gary

Paris wanted the simulation to be authentic so he fashioned one of the pool players as Gaunt Gary, who Paris said was a pool hustler from the Ames Pool Hall in New York City in 1953.
7. In this episode we learned the name of the man who programmed the Doctor. What was his name?

Answer: Zimmerman

When Torres asked the Doctor why he always said the same thing ("Please state the nature of the medical emergency!") whenever he was activated, the Doctor responded that that was the way he was programmed. He mentioned that his programmer was Dr. Lewis Zimmerman of the Jupiter Station Holoprogramming Center.
8. After wounding the nebula life form, Voyager's attempts to heal it were unsuccessful. What did the Doctor recommend?

Answer: suture

The Doctor suggested using the ship as a suture to help close the gap of the nebula's wound. By positioning the ship crosswise in the wound and emitting nucleogenic beams fore and aft it was successful. Janeway was unfamiliar with the word suture. It must have been something from the "Dark Ages" of medicine as Dr. Leonard McCoy called it a century earlier.
9. As Voyager prepared to enter the nebula Neelix was distraught and asked to wait outside in clear space in his own ship. Janeway told him no and to find a seat with a good view. What position did Neelix appoint himself to later in the episode?

Answer: Morale Officer

During a tense moment as the crew dealt with trying to leave the nebula, Neelix and Kes entered the Bridge offering snacks to the crew. Neelix announced that he had named himself Morale Officer because the crew needed a break now and then. As the series went on, Neelix oversaw various parties for crew members, the development of a beach resort holoprogram and a morning talk show.
10. Who said this? "He's a pig. And so are you".

Answer: Torres

It was said by B'Ellana Torres after the holographic pool hustler, Gaunt Gary, told her how he had a special way of treating women. Torres asked Paris if he had programmed the hustler; upon confirmation she gave Paris her opinion of both of them.
