Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first episode of "Doctor Who" was entitled "An Unearthly Child", and that title has come to represent the entire first serial. But what was the actual working production title for the serial?

Answer: 100,000 BC

"An Unearthly Child" aired on November 23rd, 1963, just one day after the assassination of President Kennedy. Despite the unfortunate timing, the episode drew 4.4 million viewers (according to Wikipedia).

There were other titles attributed to the first serial; the first was actually "The Tribe of Gum", which was the title right up until filming began, after which the working title became "100,000 BC". Other references by production staff called the serial "The Paleolithic Age", and "The Stone Age".

While "100,000 BC" is probably the most correct choice for the serial title, given the history, current packaging of DVDs and general use (dating back to the 10th anniversary special) call the first serial simply "An Unearthly Child".
2. The title "An Unearthly Child" is a reference to the Doctor's granddaughter Susan. To fit in at a local school, Susan takes on a surname. What is it?

Answer: Foreman

In the opening credits of "An Unearthly Child", the camera follows a policeman doing his rounds as he checks out the entrance to a junkyard lot with the name 'Foreman' plastered across it. From there the camera enters the lot and moves through the junk until it comes to the TARDIS.

Susan 'Foreman' was played by Carole Ann Ford.
3. Intrigued by Susan's alternating brilliance and ignorance, two of her teachers, Barbara Wright and Ian Chesterton, follow her to the junkyard lot where they meet the Doctor. Hearing Susan's voice coming from the police box, they burst inside. Which of them runs in first?

Answer: Barbara

As Barbara and Ian are searching the junkyard, the Doctor arrives. Watching him from a hiding place, they see him approach the police box, but before he enters, the Doctor realizes they are there. Ian and Barbara surmise that the old man before them is keeping Susan locked up in that tiny box, and they threaten to take him to the police.

At that moment, the door to the police box opens and they clearly hear Susan's voice calling out. Ian immediately grapples with the Doctor and tells Barbara to run into the police box. She runs in first, with Ian and the Doctor right behind - to find the interior to be much bigger than they expected!

Barbara Wright was portrayed by Jacqueline Hill, while Ian Chesterton was played by William Russell.
4. Who is the first person to utter the words "Doctor Who"?

Answer: The Doctor

The words "Doctor Who" do not get spoken until the second episode of the serial, entitled "The Cave of Skulls". After Susan and the Doctor argue and tussle over the TARDIS controls, they are thrown back far into the past. Unable to determine exactly what year it is, the Doctor and sceptic Ian argue about whether or not they have actually travelled in time. Ian demands to be let outside, saying, "Well, just open the doors, Doctor Foreman!"

He responds by saying, "Eh? Doctor who? What's he talking about?"
5. What is the name of the leader of the cave people whose father had known the secret of fire?

Answer: Za

Za, played by Derek Newark, is first seen in the show attempting to make fire - by rubbing a bone between his hands and sprinkling ash onto it. He complains, "My father made fire... He showed me how to sharpen the stones, and trap the bear and the tiger! He should have shown me this too!"

With the time of cold upon them, the danger of death by freezing is a real possibility, if things don't change.
6. Upon exiting the TARDIS, what do both Susan and the Doctor notice that concerns them?

Answer: The TARDIS is still a police box

Somehow, during their unplanned time travel, the TARDIS is damaged and is no longer able to camouflage itself to match its surroundings. Both the Doctor and Susan mention this (talking to themselves) in passing. Susan goes on to explain to Barbara what the TARDIS is supposed to be able to do.
7. Which of the time travellers is kidnapped by the cave people?

Answer: The Doctor

While outside taking samples in an effort to determine their exact place in time, the Doctor stops to light his pipe (using a match). Kal, the rival of Za, thinks that the Doctor made fire from his fingers, knocks him out, and drags him back to the cave. Kal was portrayed by Jeremy Young.

This is the only instance where the Doctor is seen smoking in any of his incarnations.
8. An unsuccessful rescue attempt leaves all four captured and bound in the cave of skulls. The Old Mother, afraid of the possibility of fire, sneaks into the cave at night and tries to kill them.

Answer: False

The Old Mother, played by Eileen Way, does not try to kill them, although it seems like that is her intent when she sneaks to the cave. Rather, she sets them free on the promise that they will go away and NOT teach fire to Za.

They escape, followed by Za and Hur, into the forest, from which the episode takes its title, "The Forest of Fear".
9. The Doctor, Susan, Ian and Barbara are all recaptured at the end of the third episode in sight of the TARDIS. At the beginning of episode four, "The Firemaker", the Doctor incites the cave people to drive Kal away, revealing to them what he had done. What is it?

Answer: Kal had killed the Old Mother

Kal trieds to claim that Za and Hur had released the captives from the cave of skulls, then killed the Old Mother. The Doctor sees that there is no blood on Za's knife, so he tricks Kal into showing his own knife to everyone, complete with the telltale blood on it that proves that Kal had actually killed the Old Mother.
10. Which of the time travellers finally makes fire for the cave people?

Answer: Ian

While (again) in the cave of skulls, Ian makes fire while Za watches. Suddenly, the exiled Kal appears and attacks Za, but Za emerges from the battle victorious.

With fire, the tribe decides not to let the four go, but they manage to free themselves by distracting them with flame-filled skulls. The cave people make chase through the forest with flaming torches, but the Doctor, Susan, Ian and Barbara make it safely back to the TARDIS before they can be caught.
